To avoid the in-store bun fight you can order the stuff online for about a week before they are in store, with free delivery.

Bought some backup gloves and socks seemed OK. Unfortunately a chainsaw said hello to me as well and I couldn't resist, so worked out much more expensive than any other ski socks and gloves I've ever bought.

Cheers for the tip off, @altis, always worth a look. Fingers crossed they have some more of those silk-merino blend socks they had a few years ago.

A couple of years ago, got some lightweight base layers for motorcyclists. Excellent for winter cycling and skiing. If any complaint - too warm.

Re Aldi helmets: Mrs MA and I have had ours for a couple of seasons. They cost £15 IIRC, and look as good as name brands ten times the price. Nice and light too.
A German skier we met spotted the Crane Sports (Aldi brand) logo and mentioned that they also have the same kit in Germany (where Aldi is Höfer). When I marvelled at the price he said "Yes, but you have not hit a tree yet..."

@dp, rubbish!! A bargain is a bargain, and you always want to take advantage of a bargain. I'm a single bloke but even I subscribe to the motto "as long as you're saving a fiver in the process, you can never have enough tampons".

A mate of mine bought that bright blue/yellow combo (cost him less than £50 for jacket and salopettes) and we skied in some filthy weather. My (significantly more expensive kit) leaked like the proverbial, he was warm and dry. Go figure...
