Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How come no one has mentioned Dark Summer. Full of freeride news, reviews and interviews. Can often be found in your local ski shop or slope for free (like Snow) or you can have it sent direct. Details on their website.

There seems to be a general agreement here that no-one seems to like the resort reviews (read 'advertisments') much. It would be nice to see magazines covering lesser known resorts, that do not often pop up on the average reader's radar. Also, there seems to be a complete lack of ski racing coverage in these magazines. Why? I myself do not get the opportunity to watch every event and sometimes it would be nice to read coverage of this sort of thing in magazines occasionally rather than on the internet. The only magazine I have seen that covers racing is Ski Canada.

I picked up my first copy of Dark Summer on Saturday whilst in S&R in Covent Garden. It was ok for a freebie but was a bit thin on content and didn't fire me up to make an effort to get it again.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My guess is that forums tend to have a core of folk with specialist knowledge that overtakes other sources. It's now an accepted way for many people to find out about stuff and works well. Mags certainly have to find a new place to be - though only some people tune into a particular magazine, as the thread proves.
Also, people do get tired of magazines - we find that many of the readers have only skiing or snowboarding for a couple of years and buying the maggs for a few issues. As an average we believe they stick with us for about four seasons and then just dip into the odd issue.
As long as people get enough info to get out and take part that's good. And may the love shine on...
Re a couple of other questions: there's a great mag called Racer Ready for UK-based racers. It's sub-only, I think.
And we do have an outdoor mag called the Outdoor Adventure Guide which is now an annual. The websites are taking more of our time so stuff other than ski or snowboard is taking a back seat.
