Just heard from my consultant..big fat No to skiing again this season ....not surprised just thought I'd ask the question lol ...follow up appointment in 3 more weeks so I am hoping that I could start partial weight bearing and physio then .....fingers crossed ..this time seems to be dragging so much !

It can be frustrating and I can wholly empathise with you. I was really frustrated by the lack of progress so Ive found the best way for me is breaking the recovery into little chunks and focussing on winning short term battles. Helped me break the monotony and like today, I won another battle by being on one crutch for the first time since I broke mine. Back to the specialist next Tuesday with I hope the green light for full weight bearing 3.5 months since the accident. Keep positive!

The Swiss surgeon estimated 3 months plus for recovery. The approach between them and the NHS has been a little different but once I started weight bearing it's been all systems go. Haven't worked since October so I'm looking forward to returning to a bit of normality next week. Haven't driven since November either.

@scottief, My austrian surgeon said 3 months as well, and I was PWB at 8 or 9 weeks and FWB at 13 (more because I couldn't get an appt the week before) and driving so that's about right. I never used 1 crutch, 2 crutches to none at 13 weeks as my Austrian surgeon advised against a single crutch as it affects the gait, and straight into physio 5 nights a week. I suppose that's similar to your timescale - I think I read it at first that you had not been weight bearing till now

Big NO to skiing again this season and just got my MRI report which says "the ACL fibres are indistinct in parts, in keeping with at least a partial ACL tear "....so I guess that will need fixing too....seeing consultant again on 10 march , guess I'll find out then ! So ACL injuries anyone bad news ? X

Ah @skiingruby gutted to hear your news a bout the ACL but it's all going to have the pot of gold (skiing) at the end of the rainbow!! Keep positive and winning those mini battles; we can keep each other motivated as we all recover through the various threads!

Really appreciate your experience @holidayloverxx. I'm just over 14 weeks now and my PWB and hopefully FWB (specialist next Tue so fingers crossed) and a return to driving and working! Intersesting about one crutch as I could say how it was affecting my gait but when on the treadmill for the first time on Monday with a little side support, my gait was normal. Been encouraged to put as much weight as comfortable by Physio on leg so I'm doing that now as I wasn't putting enough on before as my brain wouldn't let me haha. Hoping then that the transition can be faster as I get the muscle memory back and the brain to trust my leg is fixed!! Where are you now in your recovery?

@scottief, i am 4 years down the line. Break on 1st april 2013 and skied 5 weeks the next season starting in November. I have MCL damage which is a pain....Literally...but nothing to be done. I still do private physio every week as i am a lazy cow and if i don't go I can really feel the difference. I am 56 so its all about what it is going to be like in 10 or 20 years....as my physio said last week in a motivational kind of way.
You will have 2 big issues. Muscle wastage and proprioception...expect to trip over your own feet if you don't pay attention to your walking. I had physio 3 times a week supplemented with 2 gym sessions on my own for 3 months....i had £500 physio cover on my travel insurance. When the money ran out i dropped to 2 private sessions and 2 on my own for i can't remember how long. Eventually i dropped to 1 physio and 2 gym and now 1 of each every week but i really should go twice on my own...as i said lazy cow

Great post made me chuckle!! Yeah muscle has wasted but now building back up with lots of squats and a bit of gym work (light at the moment). I'm self employed so when I'm not working and get the green light I'm going to get into the gym and then see a sports physio to get me sorted for tennis and eventually skiing. I know what you mean about tripping over my own feet; funny how you learn to forget how to walk! I didn't have physio cover on my insurance but I've got some money I can use for the private physio to get me sorted; really can't wait to get into the gym and pool again properly.

I had a non-displaced TPF 12mths ago. Skied on the Livigno bash 2weeks ago with no real issues. I used a brace and ice in evening as a precaution but probably didn't need to.
Mine wasn't immediately diagnosed and was thought to be ligament damage so was told to use it as much as I could. Luckily it remained stable and healed. Lots of physio and exersize and it's about got to the point I forget about it.
I had 3 trip s planned last year and had to cancel2 but I'm making up for it this year... and I can still walk my dog. |
Just checking out Tibial Plateau Fractures. My story is exactly the same as yours. happened 17th Jan this year. Skied/side slipped off the mountain. suspected cruciate etc. Had to cancel a second ski trip. Good to hear your story, as keen to be skiing next season.
Thanks

Haha! I'm in exactly the same position as you. Told to back off in no uncertain terms, and to promise to use my crutches. That's me told! Guess we have to make a good recovery for next season.

Hi yeti girl, looks like we are in a similar boat ....can't wait to get moving again ...used to regularly swim a mile of front crawl at 0615 ...so at least the ' you must swim breast stroke ' thingy won't be an issue...although I suspect I may drown at the moment ! Lol ..
I have some money from my insurance for physio too so intend to make full use of the £350 once I am able to ....seems silly not to ...who knows maybe I will become super fit hahah....it's the look from my rather large dogs about the lack of long walks that's hardest , bit at least the days will be getting lighter by the time ...the weirdest thing is feeling lazy , even though I can't do much....but as others say even doing a bit of washing up is an achievement balanced on one leg ...my oldest son says that I will,be great at right leg pistolsquats as that seems to be how I get up and down from the sofa pit .....we will, get through this ....I am just thinking of snowy mountains next season , perhaps with a bit of extra scaffolding round my rubbish knee xx

I'm new to Snowheads. A friend recommended it. Interesting to read other stories. It's very reassuring to know I'm not alone! Only other skiers understand the desperation to get back on the snow! It took me a month to get to see the knee specialist. I'm shocked at the muscle wastage in that time. I've been given a few exercises to do. Hopefully that will help. Got six weeks in a hinged brace, PWB. Weird thing is, I haven't had a huge amount of pain. Definitely a small displacement. Seen the scan, but had happily been hobbling about (covering quite a few miles) with a temporary brace. Don't appear to have done too much damage, thank goodness.
Anyway, I'm determined to be skiing next season, probably with the support of a knee brace. Whatever it takes!!

Interesting about insurance providing money for physio. Must change mine......

Hi guys...saw my consultant on Friday , knee healing well....cleared for PWB with crutches and physio will start next week ...nothing on ACL or the fact I have OA in my lateral plateau until fracture properly healed ...he will reassess again in 6 weeks ...good news on the whole ...weirdest thing is extreme dizziness since I have put my other foot on the ground ! Everything is taking ages and I think I am probably trying to do too much as so desperate to get back to being me again ...any advice or experience of this anyone ? Xx

@Skiingruby, take a daily walk round tbe block. Increase it every day. I did mine by time and went a bit further in the time alloted every day. I think it was 30 mins but i did increase after a couple of weeks. The day after i threw my crutches away i walked a mile to Tesco, did the shopping and was knackered.

As someone in a similar boat to you (I currently am on week 6 of a nasty shoulder fracture) I know exactly what you are going through, the emotional highs and lows of recovering from breaking yourself is just pants, the highs from the days where you feel you are getting stronger and the lows from the days where you are told by a specialist that you are categorically not super woman and you do not have super healing bones and it will take 3 months so just deal with it.
Quote: |
ok guys now this is probably really dumb ..but do you think it would be possible to ski at the end of march if i put a good knee brace on or is that just stupid and optimistic lol ....x
|
Personally I would write off this season and spend the next 6 months getting fit and strong on the leg and go into next season feeling physically normal and confident..but maybe that is just me Good luck with your recovery and rehab!
