Size advice anyone? Height: 177cm, Weight: 80kg (+/- 3) approaching advanced. Logic dictates a 188, but a love of tight tree runs in Japan and several fun days on shorter fat skis lean me to the 178.
Thoughts? |
I'm 5 foot 9 and about 70kg, had last season's Nocta 185 on loan for a few weeks, and would have liked them longer - particularly in alpine terrain, but even in the trees I'd have preferred 190.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

188cm it is. Thanks all for advice! Crows, and a K2 Shreditor 92 to pad the quiver slightly are in the basket at Sport-Conrad...

Ok, Corvus stays the same apart form the graphics.
I haven't skied it, but a friend of mine (who's on the Black Crows team) tours on the 193 with Dukes - and I'm talking long, proper tours here. He is essentially pro athlete level fit and an absolutely incredible skier though. That would be too much for me though.
Corvus Freeboard still hand flexes plenty stiff. I didn't get around to trying it at the test, but it's a solid ski.

@clarky999, Cheers for coming back on this! Heading out on a road trip tomorrow night with the Corvus freebird in hand. Cannot wait!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@clarky999 - sorry to go alllll the way back to the start of the thread, but really interested in your thoughts on what exactly has changed from this year's to next Nocta's. Seriously tempted by a pair on sportconrad at the minute but you mentioned they'd made the exact changes you would have done - could you expand? Cheers!

@Dashed, no worries! For me the biggest/best changes are: it's coming in a 190, it has a bigger turn radius, and it comes with full rocker.
For me last season's (I haven't tried the current Nocta Air, but I think the only difference there was weight and graphics) Nocta had too abrupt rocker - it rose too high in too short a section of the ski (I prefer low rocker over a long length), and was too shaped - too small a turn radius, and too extreme (again too much in too short a section of the ski) taper.
I find abrupt changes in shape - rocker and sidecut - make a ski grabby and add points of friction. Smooth and gradual transitions and curves make for a much smoother and more frictionless ride. The new Nocta is maybe a little less playful in a traditional sense, but is more stable at speed in open terrain, and more pivot in tight terrain. Winning combo really.
@Weathercam, actually I'm not sure it's much lighter than the current season's Nocta Air (I think around 100g a ski lighter)?

Yep, I'm looking at the bright orange 15/16 model in 188cm. Are there big changes coming for 16/17, or is this the "updated" ski that everyone likes the sound of?
Cheers both

@Dashed, they're all bright orange
But the one you refer to is the current version. The big changes are happening for next year, when it will come in 185, 190 and 17-something.

I agree with everything you say regarding rocker/sidecut above. I have just bought a pair of this season Nocta in 190cm in the New Year Sales, dilemma is mounting point now, do I go on the line or back 1-2cm. Don't ski switch so only need to go forwards

My mate just got some BC Attris' for Xmas. It'll be interesting to see what he makes of them (ex racer and instructor so can basically ski anything).
