Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Another one for Les Borseliers, especially when the sun is out, as the balcony has a fantastic view! Smile

This!!

Lovely restaurant, I've had many lunch stops there.

A few notable exceptions in that list which was posted. Thought the Peau De Vache in Val d'Isere would be in there.

Also, they've obviously never been to Saalbach. Die alte Schmiede is the most beautiful restaurant I think I've ever been in with great food, and the Hecherhütte in Viehhofen does amazing food and has stunning views.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I think we are very lucky in the PDS that there are so many different places to eat at all budgets. We have the odd one called 'they didn't have the vegetable soup' and 'we sat there for 20 minutes with no service' oh and 'your steak appeared but what about my goats cheese salad' - and we simply haven't been back to those. Plenty of others to enjoy.

Many years ago and several changes of management, there's a restaurant in the PDS which advertises luncheon and where a friend's conversation ended up with "well, look, if you wanted to eat lunch you should have called to warn us"...

@HoneyBunny, I agree that both the Alte Schmiede and the Hecherhuette are excellent; the former is owned by a wealthy family from Leogang, who also own the luxurious Krallerhof Hotel, and the latter is owned by a very hard-working couple from the Czech Republic. Our other favourite mountain restaurants (as opposed to those down in the villages) in Saalbach - Hinterglemm - Leogang (have yet to explore Fieberbrunn's culinary options) are the Asitzbraeu (owned by the same people who own the Alte Schmiede), the Bergeralm, the Thurneralm, the Kohlmaisstub'n, the Maisalm, the Westernstadl, the Baeckstaettstall, the Reiteralm, the Wieseralm, the Pfefferalm, the Sonnhof, the Hintermaisalm, the Grabenhuette and the Gerstreitalm.

Sounds as if you enjoy eating lunch out quite a bit Tatman's Tours!

@Pamski, It's one of the delights of the Ski Circus. Every day the itinerary tends to focus on which which of the 50 or so mountain restaurants to visit - everything from a rustic, old, candle-lit hut with a log fire (e.g. Pfefferalm) to the highest brew-house in the Alps (the very swish Asitzbraeu). Although I've never been to a bad one, we have obviously developed our favourites, as well as our favourite dishes from their menus, e.g. Speck mit Ei (bacon & eggs) and Apfelstruedl (apple pie) at the Bergeralm, Grillhendl (half-chicken 'n' chips) at the Asitzbraeu, Gulaschsuppe (goulash soup) at the Hecherhuette, Tirolergroestl (bacon/fried egg/potato/onion/herb fry-up) or Schweinshaxe (pork hock) at the Grabenhuette, Grillteller (mixed grill) at the Kohlmaisstub'n, Ripperl (spare ribs) at the Westernstadl, Fondue at the Baeckstattstall, Wiesersalat (a vast crunchy/crispy salad) at the Wieseralm, home-made Germknoedel (yeast and plum jam dumpling) at the Gerstreitalm, Ofenkartoffel mit Rindfleischstreifen (jacket potato with sour cream and strips of steak) at the Hintermaisalm, Pizzas at the Alte Schmiede.....the list goes on...but I have to go now to make myself something to eat!

For anyone interested, these websites are worth looking at:

http://www.maddogski.com/resort/saalbach/food-and-drink/mountain-restaurants/

There are other useless and/or hopelessly out of date websites (e.g. Ultimate-ski.com), where the reviewer has apparently just taken a random selection of restaurants - not necessarily the best ones, and printed a load of inaccurate information about them.

Sorry about this - I get carried away when people start talking about food. You can go on talking about France now. Little Angel

Rob you are correct all the restaurants in 1950 are independently owned, nothing to do with the lift company. However a couple are run by the same families? Last season Vache Rouge was our favourite. Table de Lys is expensive but more like fine dining. Wood Bear Cafe last season was excellent for Sandwiches & soups altough I heard that someone new is running it this coming season! Mazot also good all round traditional mountain food.
