All I've now had a good look at the fat map Chamonix app I bought. Obviously I've not used it in anger but it looks impressive. At the moment you can download it together with GM foc, and the rest for £7.99 which I think is half price. Well worth a look at. If you use this link my name goes in a raffle.

Quick one - does anyone have direct experience of staying in the Pierre et Vacances apartments in Cham Sud?
Have persuaded "The Boss" that we can do a cheapo week at Easter next year as the French schools don't break up until 1st week of April but obviously the main aspect of "cheapo" has to be the accommodation. Am not particularly bothered about standard of accommodation, my main concern is, given they're such good value and that I'm over-familiar with the local nightlife, are the apt blocks generally full of hard-partying students crammed 8-to-a-room etc? We'll be there with kids (6&8 yo) so would prefer not to have loads of noise late at night...
Cheers

No direct experience of staying in the P&V apartments in Cham Sud, but when I looked last year, they came up as being more expensive than staying in an AirBnB. We stayed at a flat in Cham Sud, and the owners (a couple of school teachers who live and teach in Chamonix) had four or five other flats too. Our friends stayed in one of the others that same week, so we know what a third of them are like. They were spartan, but fine for a week, and as they were in (what felt like) a fairly residential block of apartments, there was no real threat of students etc taking over the place. We stayed at the Crocus Studio, and our friends stayed in the much larger (and nicer) Rhodo apartment.
They have a non-AirBnB website which is http://meslocationsachamonix.weebly.com/ - worth a look, they were very cheap, looks like Easter weeks this year are between €190 and €340!

@HammondR, I don't normally emerge from hibernation until the first snow falls on Cham town. Had a nose around the webcams and it all looks like summer. May just go back into hiding until I can see white.

@Mosha Marc, it is usually Mrs HammondR taxis but as she was in attendance it was a late train to Halifax and taxi to the sophistication of oven chips in Northowram.
@Zero_G, how long are you out for this year? Seem to recall you mentioned 2 weeks in your email?
@jbob, and@Zero_G, look forward to meeting up on the 7th all being well.

@Kingofthec, spent three seasons in cham sud, otherwise known as the hood. I liked it.
The up side is it has some good bars, is handy for town and the buses, plus it's cheap. The down side is its noisy if you have accommodation facing inwards and the places are very small. If there are four of you in a four berth it will be tight. If you have a car try and get a space, and some ear plugs will be handy.

@Kingofthec, Thanks very much for input, we're really after a 2-bed place - of which there are some in P&V in Cham Sud - however as @jbob says, the noise might be a problem getting sprogs to sleep and having a restful evening. I'm familiar with the bars etc as we frequent them on our regular boys' trips. Will cast the net slightly further afield for a quieter location - there's some places a bit further out towards the hospital that look interesting...
Thanks again.

@jma, check out Chamonix.com it's the tourist office website and if you search for the private rentals rather than the agencies you can get some very nice places. I'd be wary of going too far from the buses if you haven't transport with the kids. There's a snowhead call underanewname who has a very nice place up by the brevent where I have stayed, it's not cheap but it is very good and not typical of the Chamonix shoeboxes. I'll look for the web site.

Thanks again, very much, for the input. We want to be near a mate and his family who've got a place near the southern end of town which was why Cham Sud apts were on the radar and we'll be driving out so buses not a consideration - just easier to drive everywhere. Plan is to have a very (relatively!) cheap week: see friends, ski as and when we fancied with the kids, picnic on the mountain type thing.
@Dabber, the place up by Brev looks interesting, thanks but the first line of your sons website "We create Luxury Chamonix Ski Holidays..." rather gives the game away there - we've already sold a limb or two for a "luxury" week in the Dolomites at 1/2 term so definitely looking for bargain-basement accommodation - budget for the whole week (Travel, accomm, kids ski hire, passes, food etc) is as close to £2.5k as I can get it - currently I'm aiming for less but that might not be realistic!

@jma, don't be to put off by strap line . they specialise in bespoke stuff , but also do a lot of regular trips ,and have good discounts on ski hire and lift passes . they just fixed up a group of six in a really nice spacious apartment nr planards for a great price , drop them a line with your requirements and james or nic will give it a look over , tell him that "dad" recommended them and they'll look after you

I now have a place booked up - found a suspiciously perfect place for a good price on AirBnB!
I do, however, have 3 mates who're prevaricating over joining us for the week with their attendant families who may have bigger budgets than us so will pass on all your links, advice & help.
Am out with "the boys" 1st weekend of Feb too so if there's an Occasional Picnic arranged during either of my visits will try to come along and say hello.
Cheers.

We'll probably be in Cham over Xmas and NY weeks (unless it hasn't snowed in which case we'll mostly be at home in Geneva) and I can probably slope off for an occasional swift half if anyone's around. Ping my a PM and I will share mobile, etc.

@Dunny#1,
24 young? I generally go longer than 24 years between haircuts! Most of my ski togs and all my climbing gear are older than that. Crikey.
Dear all, has anyone suggested an actual meet up time, or will this be sorted out nearer the date?

Maybe just as well. This is the Vert/Grand Montets, bottom centre is GM glacier with the remains of a huge Avalanche. The pointe de Vue goes down skier left of the crown wall. Makes you realise just how much work goes on to make it safe.

@eddiethebus, quite a bit of snow forecast for next weekend, so maybe the weekend after.
The two avalanches in the photo, one below the face and the other on the GM glacier were started by Gazex.

Does anyone know if the date of the FWT weekend in Cham has been confirmed yet? The FWT website just lists a rather long period covering 2 weekends...
I'm hoping it's the weekend of the 6th Feb, as then I might pop over for that weekend...? I had a great time watching it, and testing skis last year - would love to see it again.
