First effort below using Windows Movie maker - I wish I hadn't used the "fade" transitions now, but otherwise very simple to use and good enough for my amateur efforts. Selfie stick footage is much better than helmet mounted in my opinion!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

What about relics like me, who still have a stash of unedited Hi8 and DV tapes stretching back to the early 90s? Will any free software work for me please? Or would I need to set aside a whole room and invest in specialist studio equipment to edit it? Advice much appreciated!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Power Director Ultimate Suite is powerful for the money. About 18 months ago. My son and I set up a video production company (which he now runs). We started off with Power Director. However, as the business and demands grew we moved to the Adobe Premier Pro and After Effects.

+1 for Adobe. I use Adobe premiere elements. Never crashes and can cope with huge input files. Only £60 or so. Well worth it.

Both the big OS's free video editors should work just fine, the ballache will be in getting the footage off the tapes and onto your computer to get started. I'm not familiar with Hi8, but transferring DV required real time playback on camcorder (or whatever plays it) while capturing it on computer via firewire back when i was using it. I suspect there will be plenty of modern video capture doodads to do the job if you have something to play the tapes and output the signal to something one of 'em can take as an input.

For tapes, I would google methods to get those transferred - there's plenty of information out there on how to go about it.
Editing is a different deal. Reasonable modern desktop hardware is easily up to the job of 4k editing; old nasty computers may be painfully slow to use with modern footage, but fine with low-resolution old stuff. For modest resolutions you can edit it on a mobile phone using a free app if you like (that's not my recommendation!).
Software-wise, there's a lot of free stuff about, and I'd start with that until you know what you want. And never alter the original files, as you may want to re-edit once you get better at it. Personally I use Premiere Pro, because it does everything and I know how Adobe's stuff works. I keep an eye on free/ open source stuff though as I like free stuff.

Thanks all for the advice and I'll explore those options. I can feel a long running retirement project coming on, for winter months when I'm not away skiing.

One lesser known fact is that you can get Black Magic Design's Da Vinci Resolve for free, by getting their 'free version'. The features which make the paid version paid are irrelevant to most people doing amateur stuff - so it's by far the most powerful free video software you can get for home video editing.

What do people use on their Macs? I'm running a 27" with an i5 and 24GB of RAM so should have a decent bit of horsepower.

I have just got a GoPro Max. I’m a complete novice when it comes to video editing having never used a GoPro before.
I bought the instruction book which has a lot of info on the 360 editing but has very little info on editing in Hero mode.
Using the GoPro app I have got the basics for editing 360 on my iPhone/iPad. How do you edit in hero mode? Do you just add it to the main 360 editor? Can you effect the Video like you can in 360 i.e. zoom in/out, slow motion etc?
Also, the GoPro app appears to only allow me to make short films. I ultimately want to make ten minute ski films.
I presume that I will need to use a pc editor (I’m a windows user). I’m ok with computers but would welcome suggestions for an editor that is simple to use but gives good results. I’m not looking post video’s on utube, they are just for our ski groups personal memories.
I don’t mind paying for the software if it’s reasonably priced.
One more question. My wife is booked onto a photography course and needs to get a quality photo editor (Lightroom etc). Is there a software that would be good for my vids and her photography? I don’t mind paying more for it if it covers both.
Many thanks in advance.
