To give an idea my son is in this seasons Redster FIS junior boots; 90 flex; he is about 45 kg; Active racer. Probs around level 8; He's 13 in a weeks time; I'd suggest they will be too soft for you.....

There's also a similar pair at 90 flex- I am not sure how big the jump in flex is though? If your son is in a 90 flex then maybe I should be looking at 100+then? as I am a bit heavier?

Congrats on getting the boots, have a word with ski next time you are at the race training discuss any pressure points or any areas of slack/higher volume in the boots during the session and discuss custom footbeds as well. With their help you will be able to decide if you need any adjustments to the boots from a specialist which will be worth every penny. very few people are lucky enough to have feet that fit boots perfectly straight out of the box. hopefully they will fit ok when you get them and the custom work will make them fit like a glove but if the fit is really bad may be best to resell and buy another pair but ski and the others at the race club are the best people to help you decide.

Thanks yep will definitely ask about them at race club. Haven't been able to go recently sadly but want to go again ASAP. I am a bit worried about the flex, how hard is it to get them stiffened up a bit?

Just a quick update: Went to the snow and rock in Covent Garden today. Spoke to one of their bootfitters about the right flex and tried out boots of varying flex. He reckoned that 80-90 was right for me so good choice. Above 100 and I was struggling to flex them properly. Slightly worried about the age of the boots- 2007 as I have heard that the plastic degrades- how long does that normally take?

You can not stiffen the flex on a boot but a boot fitter can soften the flex. this is not the same as adjustable flex that some boots have which the wearer can adjust themselves ie mine can be adjusted between 140, 150 and 160 by using one, two or three bolts in the rear some adjust via a dial like my other half's boots.
So mine will not go any stiffer than 160 but if I was so inclined I could take them to a boot fitter who could soften them up by cutting the shell so for example they could then be 120,130 and 140 flex an overall reduction of 20 to the flex. ( never try adjusting flex by cutting the shell unless you really do know what you are doing as it is not reversible).
My old Lange XR9 race the plastic is fine they are a 1994 model and my even older Lange ZR boots are from the 1980's and the plastic is fine on them other than sole being worn from skidding across the carpark of local dry slope for years in them because too lazy to walk. So the answer to the plastic degrading really depends how well you look after them but you will more than likely need new boots way before that happens.

Thanks speed098, I think they will be okay, providing they fit right! Boots should arrive soon, but are stuck at the depot because of the bank holidays!

JackSkier, Boots made in 2007 shouldn't be showing signs of "plastic fatigue" till after you've grown out of them. Hope they're OK.

JackSkier, Well done on the boots. I think 80 flex will be fine for you --- we want to encourage ankle flex !

Just got to try them on now. Good fit- width feels good and lots more tightening available. Flex feels good- stiffer than the 80 flexs I tried in Snow and Rock. A very slight heel raise- can this be resolved with a fitter? Shell check= 1.5 fingers

You'd probly get away with a good custom made footbed, mine were £70 in S&R. Bootfitting is ideal and of course they'll do pukka custom footbeds if you can afford it, but they're few n far between and if you're still growing it doesn't make economic sense IMO unless you're competing.
That's all presuming the inner boots aren't compressed, which is my problem causing heel lift

I am not sure if it is worth 70 quid to be honest- it is extremely minimal? How can I tell if the liners are compressed? Never realised how hard it was to get into race boots compared to regular ones! Thanks for your help

JackSkier, do your heels raise when your ankles and knees are flexed into a "ski position"? It's always possible (at least it is for me) to raise the heel a bit with a straight leg, even in very well-fitted boots.

No heel lift when in ski position- as you say only with a straight leg. They fit very well compared to what I have been using- I think it is the narrow last which makes the difference

Ski on 'em on first -- for me I can't ski without custom-made ones.

Thank heaven it will never be necessary for me to have race-fit boots! It's hard enough to get into my ordinary ones, though I find this little 'gadget' very helpful: http://www.slippinltd.com/ Recommended on snowHeads, needless to say.

Silicon spray and get them warm before you put them on.

JackSkier, if you get no heel raise in the ski position that should be fine. Sounds like a good result!

Hiya, was wondering if anyone had any ideas on din settings for me, just had them set in the shop to 4.5, however was not sure what to put my ability level + I think I may have put too lower weight as I would be skiing with a pack.
I am 55kg without pack or clothes- so may be closer to 60? I gave 55. Also had to choose between sport and performance- I would probably put myself in-between so was unsure what to leave? Online they have me in either a 4.5 or 5.5 depending on whether I am a sport or performance- what qualifies for these brackets?
I was wondering whether I should put the bindings up to 5 so they would be inbetween?

Also the bindings seem to be mounted 1/2 cm forward of recommended line will thishave been done on purpose?

Leave them at 4.5. If you find they are releasing too easily then get them adjusted up to 5.
0.5 cm is unlikely to make much difference. I wouldn't worry about it
