Jac Sprat, nothing below the glacier open at this time of year, lowest point is about 2,800 or thereabouts but mostly 3,000+

If so I guess I'll do the Anadin treatment every four hours on the way there to thin the blood - no reason not to so may as well.

Jac Sprat, don't forget that you'll be sleeping at 1,800m for a night before your first day skiing. I've never been aware of any suffering altitude sickness enough to stop them skiing at Tignes. Not sure if it's a big issue or not.

Indeed. I felt much better when I did the course with you than I did on the PSB last season, and I put that down to the PSB accommodation being much higher up.

Thanks - if there is nothing to be done then I shall just ignore it. It sounds like it hasn't been a problem for others.
I skied in val thorens last snow heads bash in April with no ill effects.

There is no correlation between altitude sickness and lack of fitness - extremely fit people can suffer from it, it really is very random.

I did read somewhere that having a strong gag reflex is correlated with being vulnerable to altitude sickness. Just some possibly spurious trivia

Just gonna have to watch or severely reduce caffeine and alcohol intake too .

Why?
'Aspirin' aka salicylic acid irreversibly binds with platelets in your blood making them less sticky. Good for reducing the risk of DVT on long-haul flights if taken a few hours prior, but every 4hrs??
As for taking Diamox prophylactically...choose a seat close to the toilet on the plane - it is a pretty good diuretic as well!
Altitude sickness, as mentioned previously, can affect the old and young, the fit and the feeble.
The most important thing is to recognise the signs/symptoms, as it is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the drop in partial pressures with altitude and subsequent respiratory alkalosis. I could bore you with more physiology-type stuff but the bottom line is that:
This is the body's natural response to less available oxygen - there are no useful pharmaceutical shortcuts to improve this that I know of
Just don't worry about altitude sickness, it could happen to any of us in a mountain environment.

Wrong. Just simply so absolutely and exquisitely wrong in any post relating to snow-associated holidays.

HossDoc,
Haha thanks I am just going on the reading I have googled. I hate taking pills so would certainly prefer not to. I read in a few places that thinning the blood is a good idea for altitude.
It is a good idea for me to limit my alcohol somewhat for other reasons but I don't particularly want to reduce caffeine with the early mornings and the need to be alert.
I wonder why I suffered so badly when I was 19. The mountaineering was exceptionally hard work but the a s made me tired after just one step and i fell asleep the minute i sat down. Mind you i went much higher - way above the glacier - right to the top of mountains like the Matterhorn. I was the only one on my group that had it at all. I had no idea it was dangerous and certainly didn't consider going lower or dropping out. I must say it spectacularly ruined the trip and never improved over one month.
However I am greatly cheered by the memory of val thorens recently where the idea of a s didn't cross my mind. I'm quite sure it'll be fine. Thanks for your thoughts.
