First day out today, mostly broken cloud but sun came out this afternoon. Can't believe the amount of snow here!
Unfortunately after lunch all the pistes were like mini mogul fields - and my novice telemarking ability can't handle that in the slightest!

Today the sun is shining from a blue sky again, temperatures are much higher than usual this time of the year, but the snow is still great, especially on east over norht to north-west facing runs, weather it might be on or off-piste.
There are still many places to find great off-piste skiing.
Expect a little bit of snow tomorrow Thursday, good fall on Friday and a bigger fall on Saturday to Sunday, more snow is forecasted again for next week, as Stanton is saying - the Russian week....
So come out and enjoy the great skiing.

Hey, Folks! I am travelling to St Anton on New Year and I would stay there for a week. I was wondering if it would be worthy to make the trip given latest update on weather conditions.
- Could somebody give me an update on the status? Would it be possible to arrive there and find the ski station closed?
- I will fly to Munich, do you think I will be able to drive from Munich to St Anton? Are the roads closed?
- Is there anything we can do if skiing is not possible? What are the different alternatives?
I would much appreciate your comments.
Thanks in advance!! |
The resort will NOT be closed, some lifts might be closed on Saturday due to winds or avalanche danger but there will still be plenty open to enjoy a good day of skiing.
The roads will NOT be closed as you're coming from Innsbruck on the highway, just make sure you get a car with winter tires, as it is required by law both in Germany and Austria, also make sure you get some snow chains with you, this is also required by law in Austria and depending on where you're going to stay here in St. Anton can come in really handy.
The expected snow fall will not make it impossible to ski, otherwise there are plenty of other activities to take part in here, so not to worry.
Enjoy your stay here. |
torbs, thank you very much for the information and recommendations!!
The forecast has improved and we hope to have a great week of skiing

Very variable right now. Temperature up & down.
However, we could be getting upto 41cm new snow till 30th. New Year Eve we could be in for some heavy snow & possibly rain (at lower elevation)

You said it. Missus wonders why I'm in a bad mood, it's not just that I hate bl**dy christmas, it's the fact that St Anton has possibly the best ever early season snow, certainly the best in many many years, and I'm not there!! Anyway, 4 weeks to go for me

Been a pretty decent few inches overnight down in St Anton. It's blowing an absolute gale at the moment and the TV is showing Galzig closed, only a few small chairs on Gampen open and Rendl open. It's still snowing now and I can hear them doing avalanche control.
It was very cloudy yesterday until about 1.30pm when the sun came out for a couple of hours. Finished my lunch and rushed up Galzig, by which time the mist had rolled back in and it was very poor visibility up top. Pistes lovely and powdery thanks to the morning snow but plenty of moguls in the usual places in the Happy Valley. Want to see the snow this morning but I'd like the visibility to pick up first!

Snowing heavily today with a strong wind, expect many lifts to be closed due to the wind, also very cold today, about -10 degrees on Galzig during the day.
We're expecting up to 40cm of fresh snow today. Tomorrow a warm front is hitting us with another very heavy snowfall, but unfortunately the temperatures are rising, so the snowfall limit might go up to about 1600m.
If you're planing to come out next week, more snow is on it's way - and plenty of it, so don't worry about a little rain down low tomorrow.

Stay low in the trees (where its legal) below Rendlbahn to Valley & also Fang. Alternatively go and have an early Apre Ski & wait till tomorrow as it is Saturday changeover day & will be quieter even though its New Years Eve.

Still snowing and heavy snowfall are expected in the afternoon, temperatures are rising quit a lot, so snowfall limit will be around 1500-1600 meter.
Yesterday saw about 40cm of fresh snow, but it was very windy from Galzig and up, so a lot of windpressed snow.
Today we expect another 30-40cm of snow, but with less wind. Still many runs and lifts will be closed, mainly due to avalanche danger.
Depending on the rain, the avalanche level might rise to a 4 during the afternoon.
Tomorrow will start cloudy but with sunny spells in the afternoon.
Monday afternoon another snow storm is coming in.
Enjoy and have a lovely and safe New Years Eve.

Rendl was delightful this morning. The rain towards the end of the day less so... particularly in the outdoor hot tub.

stanton, will this soaking of the snow pack stabilise it once it refreezes, or will the earth still be warm underneath all this snow???
|
|
|
|
|
|
kitenski The earth will be warm till the end of the season!
Once warm thats it, so that just means we have to take care on lower (below 2000-2200m) south facing slopes this season, until they have a chance to unload (avalanche).
Regarding the refreezing of the snow, thats another and much more complicated story. But if the skies clears tonight, it will mean that a lot of the moisture in the upper snow pack can start evaporating, tomorrow will be back to level 3 and with a much more stable snow pack than today.
Hope that answered your question.

torbs, isn't the ground temp normally around zero under the snowpack? I can't see how the temp at the bottom of the snowpack can be above zero without a major thaw happening. Isn't the more important factor on stability to do with temp gradient, which has probably been quite low recently with a decent snow depth and not too cold air temps. Obviously things are changing right now with the rain and warm temps. I'm no expert but curious from what's being said about the current ground temps due to I assume the warm and dry Autumn.

Level 4 back to Level 3. Just remember Level 3 is "Considrable Risk". More folk are injured or killed at this Level than any other level.
Level 3 is seen as an OK risk to take so many more folk venture out hence the increase in victims.
