because sweetie, anyone who works a bar in 1950 but lives in 2000 is still in sshtuk if they want to get home after 11pm. Or anyone in 1950 having a game of 10pin and a gentle orange juice or bop to some popular beat combo 'up top' is knackered if they miss the last lift.
Remember: it is illegal to walk the road or climb/slide the piste after dark. And a taxi (considering they've got to get from at least 1600, if not considerably further) isn't possibe... so you need a mate with a car, who's sober, or a cabriolet.
So we (cos you lot are too tight to pay for it - any of it ) have been considering opening later. As I say, probably won't happen, but if we don't ask, then it certainly won't.
(We are also looking, longer term, at the potential for buying a minibus... but again, that won't be cheap to staff up - but might have a wider usage pattern, including during the summer)

JimW, Ahhh. The danger of me missing last lift is nil as I am normally snoring my head of by then.
Is there much 'walking' the piste though illegal because of this?

Our intent is to run the last lift out of 1950 at 11pm. I have asked the resort manager to discuss with the Marie the option of later opening, but there are, as ever, constraints under French law.... Last couple of years we've put a gap in between ~ 9:30 and ~10:30 to give the lifties a break, and not exceed "no. of open hours in a 24 hours period..." cr&p. And of couse overtime to midnight or beyond starts to get verrrry expensive.
Walking up either the road or the slope after dark is illegal so I really can't come on an open forum and condone the 750m walk.
Not sure about access to / from Altitude - I think the diagrams on the website make it look worse than it really is, but you will need to get across to the other side of the village prior to starting to ski. Lanchettes is going to be your nearest uplift, but you can start by going down, again through 1950, or to the lift at Varet.

Cheers for the info Jim, much appreciated. An 11pm last lift back up is reasonable enough for us, and it looks like there are a few places to keep us occupied in 2000 after this time anyway.
With regard to nearest skiable terrain out of the Altitude complex in 2000, the resort map shows the Lanchettes chairlift on the opposite side of the village, but no idea of the scale of the map so I can't really work out how far a walk that is.
It looks like the Altitude complex is on the 1950-side of 2000, so I'm guessing our best bet to start the day with minimal ski carrying is to to ski stright down towards 1950 rather than walking across the 2000 village to Lancettes. (In case you can't tell, I'm a lazy sod and not a fan of walking and carrying skis if it can at all be avoided!).

thefatcontroller, not sure... I know the piste patrol occasionally find the odd drunk attempting to make it from 2000 to 1950 (not me he hastens to add, but some people I ahem have been closely acquainted with, wearing head torches and skis at 10:30 at night...) The seasonaiires I know would prefer to do the Road route in any event.
The road thing - you almost certainly won't get gendarme'd unlesss they follow you out of one or t'other villlage when you've been rowdy... or a motorists reports you. It's a saftey elf thing (what in France? - yes apparently so) and is Haute Savoie wide, designed to keep those natual enemies of mountain roads, pedestrians and motorists, apart.

rhsr, what week are you going in Jan ?
We'll be in 2000 for a week from 8th Jan
As you haven't been before, 2000 is sort of on two levels, the lower part is mostly the chalet are, we will be looking down on you :0)
If you ski down to 1950 you have a couple of chairlifts you can take depending on where you want to go,
If you want to take Lanchettes, you need to take a short walk to the bottom of the Aguille Rouge hotel (only a few minutes walk) and take the lift inside to the top, then ski down and maybe a little bit of poling to Lanchettes
Don't worry, 2000 isn't very spread out. you'll soon work it out

Time is ticking. 9 days till I go and im excited!
Ok so im still trying to find out how much my lift pass will be. I have a total of 13 possible snow days over my trip and Im planning to spend 12 days on the slopes. If i went for a 12 day pass can I take a day off whenever? or do I have to buy 2 x 6 days?
Cheers

tuxpoo, livetoski, rhsr, what Jim says is correct, not just in Les Arcs but all French resorts, you are NOT supposed to walk the pistes at night or the access roads between stations unless there is a footpath. What happened last season with the guy dying in a ditch in Val d'Isere prompted many resorts to send out a reminder about this. But I have never heard of anyone getting in real trouble in Les Arcs. Just being told off. Guess if you are drunk and get stopped it could be different.
Getting back to the funi after meeting friends for apree or between stations can be a pain, but not that hard if you have a torch and are sober. Getting back to Vallandry from 1800 the same. Just be careful.
surfstar, If you are looking to get a 12 day pass, then you must by the pass for the whole period to get a cheaper deal or buy two passes with a day off in the middle. There are no passes that give you a day off in the middle as you are hoping for. Not that I have ever heard about. If you do find one, please let everyone know. The other choice is to get the 'ski a la carte' and then you can ski when you want, but I am not sure it is cheaper.
What a change in the conditions. After some amazing powder on Saturday and early Sunday the rain came. And it rained and rained Now the freezing level is way up at 2000m but they say it will start to snow high up again tonight, maybe Watch this space . I will update again tomorrow evening.

prthomas, No, I can't find them either.... IIRC... lifts open at 9:15 generally. Closing - TA botton 4:20, the rest about 4:30 except AR - closes about 1/2 hr earlier. Lobster pots 5:15.

Today's update. Had a good look today, snow from above Arc 1600 to the top, but wet and quite thin in places. They have had the piste bashers out on some slopes higher up. Getting colder again with snow predicted for tonight down to about 1800 or even lower according to one local pisteur I was talking with in the bar. Even the guys that work up there do not agree about how much snow is coming. It is raining outside right now quite heavy. Let's hope it is snowing higher up now. I have had enough of all this rain.
Will have a little trip out tomorrow if the weather is not to bad. Getting quite into this skinning stuff now or maybe the snowshoes and ride back down on my board. Well, I do enjoy coming down on un-tracked snow all on my own! I know, very silly going out alone, but ha, life has to be fun!
allanm those times look about right, but at the start during the first week they tend to start late, some lifts do not open until 9.30am. During the high season weeks in Feb and Easter they will open the lifts at 9am, some even at 8.50am and they close at about 5pm although some will be 4.45pm and others will be as late as 5.30pm.
Getting back to Jan, 9.15am open to 4.30pm close is the norm for lower lifts. Higher ones as Allan says do close earlier.
When you get the piste map for this season, the times are printed on them. Will see if there are any in the office tomorrow.

Not sure if I posted this already. If you want to get your season Carte Neige Insurance in Les Arcs in person, you can only get it from the lift office in Arc 1600. The lift office is in the courtyard area by the shops. You can also buy it when you get your season pass on-line.

If it's best to sort out beofre leaving how long in advance do they need to be paid and what sites are best to use? Thanks for your help again guys!!

Been really busy skiing and just having fun, but here is the latest update. Oh and not a film star in sight for my guiding, but plenty of film producers and the like so still good.
The Sun was out for Saturday, Sunday and most of Monday which transformed the snow higher up in the Arc 2000 bowl into chalky spring like conditions mixed in with some very icy patches due to the very low temps and still the odd pocket of fun powder in short spurts. Overall very mixed conditions everywhere in the Arc 2000 bowl off piste which has become much safer as long as you are very careful where you ski.
The pistes in the Arc 2000 bowl are all in great condition and you can now ski down to Pre St Esprit. None of the links to Villaroger are open, but they say it should open by the weekend, although unless we get more snow you will have to down-lift to get to the cars. The Aiguille Rouge might open on Thursday or Friday depending on the weather which is changing fast.
You can ski down to the main Peisey and Vallandry lifts without any problem although it is artificial snow and can be quite icy in places.
Likewise getting down to Arc 1800 and Arc 1600 is OK although there to it is mainly artificial snow, but with plenty of real snow mixed in.
Overall I think the conditions are OK for this time of year and anyone heading out for Christmas should have a good time. It is snowing lightly outside as I type this and has been doing so all day with the odd blue patch of sky coming through.
More snow is forecast for the next for days so I will update again later in the week.

Hi All
Over the last few weeks i have been asking various questions to snowheads and getting sum great info.
So now we are all booked on the 29th jan for 2 weeks , 1st week staying in 1800, 2nd week staying down in BSM, so i was wondering as we are wanting to visit the various valley resorts over the 2nd week, does anyone know of people running daily shuttles to Val, 3V, tignes etc. from BSM, as we have decided against car hire due to maybe drinking etc the nights before (not really worth getting my licence took away!) i have seen the normal bus service to val etc but haven't seen anyway of getting to 3V!
Or if anyone who resides in the area fancies earning a few quid i'd rather give my cash to fellow snowheads!
other option i thought of is, do tour operaters do trips to the other resorts and we could drop the rep a few quid to tag along.....
Any help, shuttle details or advice will be much appreciated
Thanks
Ady

Enjoyed a fabulous week in Arc 2000 - going home Sunday so still have tomorrow. It's been snowing heavily and we were restricted today with only a couple of lifts open - we still went out to play though. Yesterday we went up the Aiguille Rouge and over to Vallandry. Lots and lots of snow and empty pistes. I can't believe I'm saying this but I've loved the black moguls on the Col - this year has been a turning point in my skiing and I've felt able to really take advantage of the variety this area offers. I've been happy to go down anything pisted and some off piste quite happily in the conditions we've had this week. As a middle-aged, female, late learner I'm chuffed!
