Early season is always a bit of a gamble working out where will get the most snow...
in all honesty I would rather have 'limited riding' in the PDS than be snowed in with zero vis and -25 in Val T

Everyone, everyone, stop worrying. The conditions were already good when I went out last Tuesday. It has since snowed every day and today it is snowing pretty heavily. I think pretty much all the lifts in Chatel are opening tomorrow, plenty of snow to go around, more snow to come

endlessride, good points, particularly on exactly where you go. I've been most surprised at how much snow the Grand Massif (or parts of it) get given heights (much like the PDS). It's amazing how much of a difference a few km's can make. At the mo, Chamonix in general has rather more snow at any given altitude than the PDS, just because of the way the wind blew. But I've seen the opposite many times.

Snowing hard in Champery all day today and alot of snow yesterday too. The temperatures are also very low too, currently minus 9!! Everything on the is side is supposed to open tomorrow, along with links to France, although Chavanette (Wall) is going to be closed for skiing for a few more days as insufficient snow and exposed rock and metalwork at the top - This is due to the way the wind has been blowing all week!! Swiss have been working hard to make snow and Planachaux looks well covered at last. Ripaille drag has had a lot of snow pushed up the bank to ensure there is a high enough wall of snow to form the drag track, allowing the lift to work apparently!!
I am off up now on my skins to see whats happening and will report back tonight.....But smile everyone, its going to be a fine start!!

Same in Morzine. It has been snowing all day and expected to continue this eve. Pleney opens tomorrow. All in all things looking good for next week.
The forecast high freezing levels on the 23rd are also coming down; currently forecasting snow down to 1400m and then 1000m. It looks like it will be quite a snowy week
Those of you coming out, enjoy it.

Great day out today - not quite so cold as previous two but still lots of layers, and skiing with the snow piling down around us at Avoriaz, which meant we couldn't see very much a lot of the time but oh so pretty. We had a lesson this afternoon with Glenn from BASS which was excellent. Trying to undo all the very bad habits of a lifetime of course.
Les Gets is looking lovely when all the lights come on - all speed Lou.
We did hear today of some poor people who arrived in Lets Gets around midnight last night, staying in a friend's chalet. They had left Le Havre around 8.30 a.m., took five hours to clear Paris and were then put in convoys by the police behind the snow ploughs. Makes our trip on Monday which took 9.5 hours seem like a doddle - and it would have been quicker if we hadn't been delayed when my bag was stolen at a service station cafe on the motorway. Hopefully we shall soon have new passports winging their way from Paris - but we did meet a charming gendarme in Tannges when it all had to be reported and a rain forest of paperwork printed out.
As said earlier - its all going to be alright....

This should warm the cockles of your heart. I took my father-in-law out for some exercise. He marched me up to the top of the Grande Terche lift (500m of ascent from the car park), what a difference a day makes. 30cm of fresh at 1400m (where we took this photo).
For those interested the avalanche report can tell you a lot about conditions. It looks like the North Chablais (ie the PDS / Bernex / Habere Poche etc) has done particularly well over the last 24hrs.

All open today, skiing conditions pretty good, and once again Chatel has more snow at 2200 m (85 cm) than Tignes has at 3300 m (80 cm). OK, so it is only a 5 cm difference, but the top of the Portes du Soleil is significantly less rocky than the top of the espace killy.
Sadly with loads of guests arriving today, I'm not able to ski

Just finished a days skiing in Les Gets. Not many of the lifts were open but the snow on the pistes is pretty good and there is about 25cms of fresh snow for a little off piste action. More lifts are to open tomorrow, including Ranfolly express and rosta. It should be a good day!

Likewise its pretty good here in Champery! Lots of new snow fell today too. Approximatley 20cm in the village, on top of what fell last night causing arrival mayhem and snow clearing problems! The local police checking tyres.....Beware if you are due to arrive here without chains or snow tyres! 4x4 without snow tyres does not cut it either with the police! Up top was splendid with it still snowing hard now at 6.30pm!!

-17 in our car park this morning and -21 at Ardent. (It was a "balmy" -10 / -14 yesterday.)
You can probably guess what I'm going to say next...
...well, you'd be wrong. The blue skies (at least this morning) meant that it was
Another day doing ISIA training - this time we headed over to Les Crozets to get into the sun. As for Plaine Dranse / Linga the snow that there is is good - a few rocks, etc in high traffic areas, but generally ok. We even ventured off-piste and, as long as you pay attention, then there was some very nice skiing to be had.
Much against expectation we had a very nice meal in the Restaurant Portes du Soleil (the triangular shaped hotel / restaurant in Les Crozets). I say "against expectation" as we've generally found food on the Swiss side to be, well, rubbish. This, however, was sublime. One day, all Croute will taste this way...
The weather closed in this afternoon and reminded us why skiing can sometimes be a very attritional sport. Windblown snow - straight in the face. Brrrrrrrr.
By the way, did I mention that it was cold?

It was -19 in Les Gets when I got up this morning, always a bit of a shock as we never seem to be cold inside. Some problems early on with the buses it seemed - we had just given up and were putting on our skis to ski over to the bottom of the lifts when a minibus turned up. Later on the navette seemed to be running ok - maybe the wrong sort of diesel or driver.
And yes, we can ski from not far from the chalet, and return easily, but we have this perverse need to take the bus occasionally as not many people do up our road and we would hate the service to be discontinued.
The Rosta bowl was very crowded, rosta lift still the same and catching out unsuspecting people who don't move fast enough to avoid being hit - huge increase of course in the number of people around since yesterday, the village was humming late this afternoon and the snow was piling down.
Lovely blue skies here this morning too and then it closed in. There appears to be a new path for skiers through the village to cross to Mt Chery - which means that cars can no longer turn left just after the ice rink. It wasn't stopping anyone last week but probably with more traffic now it would be wise not to!

Exactly the same here. A few years ago I crunched our car onto a big (and completely invisible!!!) rock just before we were due to come out, and we flew out and got a taxi (we couldn't afford to hire a car for 5 weeks). So we were completely dependent on the skibus - not for skiing because there's a piste a few metres away) - but for shopping. Once we got into the swing of it, it was fine. We made friends with the driver, it was good for my French, and we felt we were making good use of the service. But now we use it rather rarely, I'm afraid.
Yes, it was perishing, and I was not one bit sorry to be playing on toboggans with the grandchildren, down the bottom, and helping my 6 year old granddaughter spend her first hour EVER on skis. We have a lovely little, almost flat, free nursery tow. The last thing she said tonight was "Tomorrow, can we just have breakfast and get straight into our ski suits and go skiing RIGHT AWAY". So I think that was a success. Another hour's potter tomorrow, then she has three private lessons on Tues, Weds and Thurs. I'm thrilled as she's a bit of a wimp and I was not convinced it would work. When I took her ski boots off and put her slightly too big snowboots on she moaned and said they were far too loose and floppy and insisted on having the ski boots back on.
Chucking it down here, too - I've looked out of the window every 10 minutes all evening.

Just finished 3 days in Avoriaz. Loads of snow came down in those 3 days, conditions aren't perfect yet, but it looks well set for the season. We were able to get over to Les Gets and Champery, generally decent skiing though largely pretty poor weather, especially Sunday afternoon. Sadly the snow has hit even very low down so I'm now in a giant queue waiting for a hotel after Easyjet cancelled pretty much all their flights!
