Returned from Tignes late last night, after a week of snow and rain every day. First time I have ever seen poor weather for a whole week! Being Australian, the wet snow/strong winds/lack of visibility/rain all unfortunately made me feel at home, but I did have a few powder runs, even if the powder was only for the first few hundred metres on most runs, turning into wet elephant snot or pacific cement as they say in Canada. Best days were the two saturdays, with sunshine in the morning on the first day, and a few powder turns on the last.
It was my first time in Tignes, I hope to return in a few years if possible!

It's still snowing. I just had a hell of a morning. I have never done much in deep powder before but with two feet on the pistes there was not a lot of choice today. Plus the instructor of my "red going on black' improvers group decided that pistes were for wimps anyway I have mixed feelings after digging a ski out from under a waist deep bit and then trying to get it back on. I was well cream-crackered. On the other hand the feeling when it starts to go right more or less makes up for all the pain and humiliation.
Hopefully the snow will stop soon and we will be able to see where we are going more of the time.

cold. really cold. and maybe some more snow. which would be nice. then a bit warmer, and hopefully a lot more snow, but that might all change, as undoubtedly will 4,7,15,17,31 and 43.
getting towards that time - might be booking a week soon, maybe for the 16th depending on how the forcast pans out, and whether mr crystal offers me a huge discount to fill a space.

Th afternoon was a bit better but maybe that's because I was out on my own and only skied stuff I knew I could do. Finished the last run down from Palafour in what felt like near darkness. Then did 3 pitchers in the Loop Bar with Bogus junior which made me feel quite light-headed. It's stopped snowing now so hopefully tomorrow will be bright and lovely.

Yesrorie, I would have to agree. Today was the sort of day that reminds us why we took up this skiing lark in the first place. The early morning had clouds. Individual clouds with blue bits in between unlike the grey roof on the world of recent times. All yesterday's snow had been groomed to perfection on the pistes and when the sun actually came out from behind the clouds it was as beautiful as it gets. Late in the day there was ice around between the moguls especially on the last bit of Trolles before the schuss. Santons is still the piste of the devil but I did it without breaking anything. I may never do it again as long as I live.

GeorgeVII, I signed up for a class that included a morning on the bumpy stuff. I could wimp out as some of my fellows have but what the hell? What does not kill me will make me stronger. And so in fact it has proven. I have now fallen down most of Sache. The good thing though was that the last bit of steep wide red into Les Brevieres came as a blessed relief despite being wall to wall ice. This afternoon I will do some gentler stuff with junior who is snowboarding. I can almost keep up with him when he is on a board. As for the conditions which is what people may actually want to know about - well it's another day in paradise. Sunnier than yesterday. Pistes are lovely if a little bit icy in places. Now and again you can see grass showing through though. Just goes to show that there is not yet a deep covering of snow and that running some of the snow cannons at night is not as daft as it first appears.

The latest from my blog:

I couldn’t be having a better week at work.
A ski school allocated visit to Tignes Val Claret’s Club Med usually means a chilled out week with belt-busting long lunches (courtesy of their top restaurant), and so far I haven’t been disappointed, though the greatest blessing is the snow my eager teen-aged group and I have had the pleasure of skiing every day.
Heavy snowfall on Sunday night dropped quadricep-burning knee-deep powder all over Tignes, much to the delight of my Russian Comrades who are holidaying on this Eastern Orthodox Christmas week.
Cold temperatures have been preserving the snow, and the last remaining patches of fresh are still as good, now two days later.
Complaints of poor visibility have been commonplace over the past fortnight, so the moaning-masses had to scratch their heads for new excuses, when yesterday morning the skies cleared to present the best day of the season so far.
Today was another belter, though a bit on the chilly side, with more heavy snow forecast to fall before the weekend, it looks like a good time to pick up a last minute holiday bargain. |

I quite agree but the instructor was navigating us back to base at that point. Not really a big problem, and I agree that there were times in the morning when our little group seemed to have the world to itself

Rob_Quads, not a great line really.
The flat ground at the bottom of that pitch is a lake, if it avalanches you end up swimming under tons of ice and snow. For a short time anyway

Mixed day today. Off-piste in the morning. Still loads of powder around for me to fall in. And some sunshine. By the last run I managed to get my turns:falls ratio above 1. The light started to close in at the end of the morning and by 3 o'clock it was really horrible and also threatening to start snowing. Decided that discretion was the better part of something and came in early at 3.30.

Some overnight snow but it doesn't look like the 11-15 cm that was forecast. The sky is overcast but doesn't look too bad. Hopefully the sun will come up and burn some of it off soon. An easy relaxed day in class is promised today after the exertions of the last two, so it should be a good end to the week.

What looked hopeful at 8 looked horrible at 9 and then quite nice at 10. The morning was decent without being great although at one point we could look out over towards La Rosiere which was bathed in glorious sunshine. The new snow made the pistes all fluffy and lovely - even Santons. By the way, to my fellow Santons-phobes, the trick is to do it early in the morning. Soft snow, no bumps, no ice and almost no people made it quite enjoyable - and I never thought I would say that The wind did get up for a while and the scene at the top of the Solaise chair was right out of Scott of the Antarctic.
Then it started to snow at lunch time and although I did go up again it was a lot less fun. Ghengis Khan and his Mongol hordes cold have been on Grattalu and Lac and I wouldn't have known (apart from the smell of horse I suppose). Visibility was almost non existent and continued that way down into Le Lac. A quick trip up Paquis and down Piste H into Val Claret and that was my week done - a couple of hours early but with all limbs intact. Now I really want it to stop snowing for long enough to drive down the mountain in the morning.
