Chris Brookes, they might put in possibly 1 more appt block but I doubt they'd build another hotel, I also doubt they'd take out the funicular as it would be expensive to remove that and put in a different lift and the maintenance of a funicular is easy in comparison to other lift types, I suppose they could increase the ski area but I'm not sure where they'd put in extra runs.
They've been talking about putting a chairlift from the Arven base up to Eigergletscher for about 35 years but it still has not materialised, also they've actually removed some of the Wengen runs in the last 10 or so years when you'd think they would prefer to have more runs

I think the issue with both the T-bar at Birg and the Salzegg Bowl is that they are both quite exposed areas, therefore a surface lift will continue operating whereas a chair would have to stop. This would be less of an issue at Salzegg, but at Birg, the only alternative is a black run down

Chris Brookes, thats a similar reason to my not wanting to use the drag at Salzegg, I was the lucky one but the kid behind me let a scream go up that could be heard for miles, I think both his legs got broken and a lot of blood got spilt, shame really as the salzegg bowl often has really nice snow in it

I've seen several pile ups at Birg...the most spectacular involving 14 people from Oak Hall....yes, they still insist on taking their beginners up there!

Elizabeth B, I sometimes think Oak Hall should just get rid of its instructors I think the kids would be a lot safer without some of the idiots I've seen leading them

Weather
I hate to say this but the forecast is not good
Rain forecast at resort level for Friday, with possibly some wet snow Saturday and Sunday, Monday looks more promising but it may turn back to rain by Wednesday
On the bright side the temps are still cold enough that the rain should fall as snow on the upper slopes, also the snow is still arround in the resort, if it has frozen any rain may run off and not take the existing snow away, if it does stay it should provide a great base for the rest of the season

That's what happens when all your staff do it out of the goodness of their hearts...often you don't get the best, most experienced people.

Luckily snow depths havn't changed all week, snow forecast for tommorow, possibly more at the end of the week, temps are not forecast to be quite so high this week so it looks as if my earlier guess that the existing snow would pack down has proved correct

To quote my friend Beat, "Yesterdays snow falls were very little and very wet" however more snow is forecast for the weekend so we will just have to hope it appears
No changes to snow depths except there is none in Lauterbrunnen

Me too, Chris. i'm there in two weeks - and I'm taking a group of seven - so guess who will have to buy the beers if the snow fails to materialise. Point of interest, what depth of snow at Manlichen/ KS is the minimum for decent piste skiing.
Just so I can really focus my anxiety!!!

Brian T, not much 20cm will let you ski as they have been putting down artificial snow but I'd like to see about 60cm up top and 20cm in village as a reasonable covering, that can however fall in one night so only start to worry about 2 days before you go

I'm thinking that I'll be ok in late January? Is this a late start for snow accumulation? It has been amazing for us here in Colorado, got several feet of snow over the weekend and had a great 6 days on it over the holidays.

nextascent, that is just SO cruel... and ironic. In europe we worry about reducing snowfall, higher temperatures, melting glaciers, and the global warming which causes them, while in the Land of the Free which allegedly is the largest contributer to global warming, you enjoy massive snowfalls. Is there no justice

nextascent, late Jan is usually pretty reliable, unfortunately no new snow at the moment so the Mannlichen will not open this weekend

Chris, snow dances are good... but remember for them to be trully effective they need to be performed naked and be caught on camara, and the resultant image posted here. Marks out of 10 for style and courage will be awarded, with bonus points over the next two days, dependant upon the depth of snow produced. The most effective dance must then be copied by all snowheads within one week to ensure massive dumps over all alpine locations.

Hmm very puzzling indeed, but I think I know the answer. You see, we are having all sorts of weather anomolies here this year and last few: horrible hurricanes and tonados, flooding in one area, severe drought in another. Clearly we are being punished. But I would greatly appreciate it if you didn't let on that buckets full of snow are NOT a bad thing. Shhhhh
