going to avoriaz and porte du soliel for the first time on the 24th and was wondering if you tend to have many lifts closed due to heavy snow fall and poor visibility as it looks like there ould be more snow next week

droopy, Linderats, Morzine (Pleney), the lower Les Gets slopes and the top of Super Morzine all offer tree-lined pistes. Of those, Pleney is probably your best bet.
MrsFlyingStantoni and I spent a whole day on one run (Zore on Super Morzine) one day because the conditions were truely horrid.

chelt881, it's unusual for lifts to be be closed because of heavy snow, unless the avalanche risk is 5. I've never known a lift to close because of poor visibility. The most usual reason for closure is because of high.
If the weather is bad, though, do bear in mind that the consequences of being stranded in the "wrong" part of the PDS can be quite painful. I've not been able to get back to Linderats from Avoriaz once because of high wind, which was fine. Only 30 minutes earlier I was in Switzerland, which would have been somewhat more problematic.
I've also been stuck in Plaine Dranse for a couple of hours because of a power failure, followed by a backup generator failure.
I now make sure I carry a credit or debit card with me when I ski outside of Avoriaz / Linderats.

d2dja, snowandtrek,
Les Granges also had a power cut this morning, hence no weather update. However it has now been restored and I can report that snow has continued to fall all day.

To anyone in the area at the moment. I know the new snow is great but the local press are reporting a death yesterday in an avalanche on the back of Mont Chery. Be careful out there.

Very sad news. The weather yesterday was snow with quite bad visibility at times and the snow was heavy.
However on a happier note - the skies this morning were blue and the temperature had dropped = a glorious morning skiing the powder. First tracks on Nyon!!!

andyph, it's nearly a year since a friend of ours, also a ski instructor, died. The village gave him a really lovely 'send off' in the days after his death. They had a torchlit descent which spelt out the letters of his name. He was also just 45.

I go to Avoriaz tomorrow till Sunday. Please help me lift the incessant gloom caused by the credit crunch and the miseries it is inflicting on people.
Please?

Got back late yesterday after 4 days in Avoriaz, Conditions on sunday and Monday as have already been reported as not being ideal. Espescialy for our 5 year olds first trip[ to the snow. How ever she did remarkably well considering the conditions. When we left the snow was great and the sky was starting to clear. So sorry to hear about the avalanch and death over in Les Gets. We heard the snow sonic booms going of all morning to try and clear the snow.
Looking forward to returning in a month or so time for my main weeks skiing with the older children.

Snow was amazing today. Skied all over les Gets, Nyon & Pleney on the best day's skiing of the week by far. Unfortunately, the cloud closed in in mid-afternoon. We all really enjoyed our week.
I hadn't heard about the avalanche, but I was cross when I saw people skiing on ther closed les Creux run. I'm even more cross now - D1*kh34d5!
So sorry to hear of the death. Sincere condolences to the Delavay family.

Thought it was time to start a thread for this winter as we woke up this morning to SNOW!!! It's the earliest we've seen it in Morzine village - and we've been here 6 years in November!
The locals are muttering about the winter being a cold one but are yet to speculate on the amount of snow!

A fanatastic morning skiing the Valley de la Mache in near perfect condtions with fluffy powder top to bottom and fresh tracks all the way. Rounded off by a lovely lunch at the Crappahutte.
Anyone out in the next weeks should be in for some excellent skiing.
Little plug - we have availablity in our catered chalet at a song for the week of 31st January - PM me if of interest - at least 30% off!

I had a little ski around the Grand Turche today checking out the off piste. The snow is truly fab. Spent the avo around Nyon. Finished it off by skiing off the back of the Chamossiere bowl down to the Vallee de la Manche. A fantastic descent. All on my new off piste skis, Nordica Dobermann SLR's as recommended by David Murdoch, a truly fab ski.
snowandtrek, can I borrow your lovely long Rossi coat this weekend. I think I might need it?

Weather this morning is a bit miserable but freezing level is due to fall agin this afternoon with snow in the village by the evening. Foreacst is for approx. 90cm on the top during the weekend!!!!!! Then more during the week with our lovely part of the world getting most of what's coming - according to www.meteo-chamonix.org (you have to read French sorry!)
zzz, Sorry......think I might be needing it myself! Are you 'early beering' today?

Don't you just love Google translation...
The flow of the West takes more strength and is activated for next 48 hours. Heavy rains will affect all our mass Friday and Saturday with large fluctuations in the limit rain / snow. A 2000 meters, the snowpack should win 40/90 cm according to the additional mass. The situation can become dangerous with a risk of avalanches in high-rise and periods of rainfall Mountain clearly destabilizing the snowpack.
A lull is likely Sunday but further snowfall abundant are scheduled for next week with redoux less marked. The snow will increase significantly in the next 7 days and return values well above the mean an end January.

Hello everyone. Greetings from a cold & windy Northern Ireland.
We had a really great week and thoroughly enjoyed the sunshine, the fresh snow and the many wonderful restaurants both on the mountain and in the village of Les Gets.
Loved the new extended Lhotty's (as expected) and the new management at Pointe de Nyon is continuing the high standards of their predecessors. Belvedere on Mt Chery was excellent and the food matched the awesome view, but the real find of the week was la Paika.
Back to porridge for me but hope you all have a smashing season.

Question for my annual local advice, Messrs Stanton, Murdoch (feel free others) how dangerous is it? |
Do you mean the avalanche risk or the lift queues?
In all seriousness, if you mean the avalanche risk then I've no idea as I'm currently sat in an office near King's Cross sorry.
