Thanks @swskier and @SaraJ for the suggestion, a return to the Ahorn seems a favourite choice for tomorrow - partly because there’s a falconry display (we had a chat with the guy that looks after the birds of prey yesterday!)
We’re here until Sunday so on Saturday might try Gerlosstein (or Hochfügen but I’m guessing there will be a lot of traffic heading down the valley).

@simonbaddeley, any more detail on the falconry display would be appreciated. Love those things, and I'll be there in less than a month.

@Ekposh, skied it twice yesterday - it’s a fun run with virtually no one on it! If you liked the Ahorn valley run the black down to Möslbhan is worth a go.
It’s been warm and sunny today south facing slopes were soft.

@Dubmuffin, depends what you find terrifying! If you need a nice wide blue that’s not too long then the Ahorn is worth a visit.

The black to Möslbahn is a lovely run. Quiet and not used too much, well worth a lap on there.

We went back today, there’s a display every day except Saturday at 12:30, we had a falcon and a couple of owls skim the top of our heads! They had a few other birds out but not flying. It’s located near the bottom of the 8 person chair, there’s a collection box for bird conservation but otherwise free!

@simonbaddeley, thanks, I will check it out. Got to wear the big glove and "hold" an owl once at one of these displays. It tiptoed off the glove and I'll put it this way: if you don't think talons are sharp, think again

Super warm today, nipped out after work and the Schneekar was showing 11 degrees at about 2.30. That had dropped to 9 degrees by 4 when it was then in the shade.

Today was OK, visibility came and went but seemed to snow a little.
Still feels a little warm and the afternoons are a bit slushy but still enjoyable. Much better today VS Sunday (though Sunday was a glorious sunny day as demonstrated by swskier). North facing slopes always better of course.
Kids having a blast around the Penken. We went up to 150er Tux and condition us there were great. Even the 66 down was good at lunch, imagine it will get cut up in the afternoon though.
Town very busy, must be Dutch holiday or either way the town must be popular with the Dutch.
Ahorn and Hintertux to come...

Hi all, looking for some advice please for a short visit I'm making with a couple of friends to Mayrhofen the second weekend of March. We're taking an early flight on Saturday to Munich then picking up a hire car to drive down hopefully arriving around lunchtime so we should get in at least a couple of hours skiing before lifts close.
Question is where should we go to make the best of our time for an afternoon? Two of us have already done a trip this year, the other hasn't skied for a few years so will need a few easier going runs to warm up. Option 1 is to park up at Horberg, pick up gear there and head up Penken, option 2 is stop off at Zell am Ziller instead.
Is there any difference in lift opening closing times between Mayrhofen and Zillertal Arena so we could get stay out a bit longer in one place over another? I can't find much information online about lift opening times except for the main gondolas. I was also thinking Zell might be less busy so runs could be less cut up later in the day?

Kaltenbach is an earlier station in The Valley so would save you a few mins - or maybe more given you are arriving on Saturday. I saw some queues on the road to Zell and Mayrhofen, both further down The Valley. Kaltenbach and Hochzillertal lifts close at 16:00, the base station takes about 8-10 mins to get up.

As @snowheeeed says, i'd probably stop at Kaltenbach, it'll save you 5/10 minutes of driving. Lifts will close at a similar time to Zell am Ziller. You have the valley run in Kaltenbach, whereas currently the Zell am Ziller valley run doesn't have enough snow to open. This is because the Kaltenbach run is North-East facing, where as Zell am Ziller is South-West facing.
If you wanted to save further driving time, you could stop at Fügen and ski the Spieljoch. It's a smaller ski area, but that wouldn't matter too much as it's a Saturday afternoon warm up.
Of course this could all be scuppered by some southbound Munich traffic, so fingers crossed for you on that aspect.

Tomorrow's snow forecast seems to have improved. Bergfex suggesting 58cm tomorrow at the top of the mountain, with a freezing level of pretty much valley level and 20cm down in the valley and the freezing level staying around 800-1100m until mid week next week.
A good weekend ahead hopefully

I will be going to Mayrhofen this wknd and plan to buy the 6-day ziller ski-pass (Sunday-Friday). By any chance does the ski-pass work from Saturday afternoon? That's how the skicircus =pass works in Saalbach i.e. you can use the pass from 3.30pm the day before. Just wondering if that is the case all over Austria and specifically Mayrhofen?

@martebart, I'll ask the lift pass office this afternoon for you.
Hammering down here in the valley while i'm sat at my desk working but i'll pop up the Unterbergalm and ski down at the end of the day when the boss finishes work just to get a powder fix. Even my boss is talking about going skiing this afternoon and he's quite the workaholic!

Great pictures and update keep em coming is a gr8 antidote to the wind, rain in the UK, was starting to get worried as we come out March 24th, but the webcams show gr8 coverage. We did the same week last year in Mayhrofen and loved it, can't wait to come back.

Lovely out there today. Not too cold, just above freezing at the base of the Schneekar.
I was the first down Black 12 (except lifties) and that was great with some fresh snow on top, along with the knee deep powder just off the sides.

@swskier, did you get an answer to the question about whether the ski pass works from 3:30pm Saturday? Might be fun to get a couple of runs in as I'm arriving Saturday.

Hello fellow Snowheads,
I am totaly new to this formun and also a ski noob.
We are planning a extended weekend trip to Kaltenbach for skiing. ( 29th of Feb)
Some facts:
- Beginner, 30y old, 15h on snow total
- started skiing few weeks ago, spent 15h on snow in total
- no need for magic carpet etc, surpassed that level
- can do basic parrallel turns, yet not super efficient and need a bit bigger radius
- want to make it enjoyable and not stressful, want to avoid steeper blues until I get full confidence
Questions:
- Which area/slopes to take? I have been skiing on Flumserberg (CH) 2 times, and level of blue slopes is quiet different. There are some (to me) super steep slopes. I want to avoid those and spend some practice time and enjoyment on easier blue slopes.
I was looking at this map https://zillertal.intermaps.com/hochzillertal_spieljoch
- Which ski school would you recommend ? Planned to take an hour or two with trainer to improove my skills
Looking forward for any recommendations!
Thanks @swskier, for pointing me here

@J2R, I actually forgot last Friday, but have just asked now. No it doesn't start on the afternoon before, only from the first day you pay for, so in your case, Sunday.

Hmm, € 36,00 might be worth it if we get there early enough. I suspect we won't though, in which case I'll have to fall back on the beer option instead.

@chad_user23, Of course I'll recommend the ski school that I work for You can find information regarding prices here:
https://www.skicheck.at/en/hochzillertal/private-lessons/
Let me know if you want to book something and I'll check availability and sort out your booking.
The descriptions that people wrote in the other thread that you started were pretty accurate. I'll just add that if you want to ski on the blue pistes in Hochfügen it is possible to download on the Zillertal Shuttle gondola coming from Kaltenbach, to avoid the reds on the Holzalm side of Hochfügen. It would be a mission to ski back to Kaltenbach for a blue piste skier though. If you end up in Hochfügen, I suggest you get the bus/train back to Kaltenbach.
