My spyder gloves (bought as a teenager) lasted that long.
Was gifted one of their coats for xmas a few years ago and bought the matching salopettes, I know they're a bit cringe for some people but the quality is still great. Also in terms of price, they're basically the same as the other brands now, and cheaper than some others. The missus has Mammut gear that I'm quite jealous of, and if I was getting new gear I'd go with them, quality is incredible and they actually look nice.

My spyder gloves (bought as a teenager) lasted that long. Probably would have lasted longer too if I'd taken care of the leather properly.

@Gordyjh, what a pleasant turn of phrase. I skied once with headphones. Didn’t like it, having music on whilst skiing was not for me. Just not one for oppressing my opinion on others and prefer to consider that my view on matters may not actually be the only one around. It takes all sorts.

I don't think this thread is about being right or wrong about anything, let alone the occupation of the moral high ground, it's about what people subjectively and individually find annoying. Personally I hate all noise pollution (including irrelevant 'background' music, I've just had a brilliant film about Vermeer spoiled for me by this) but I acknowledge I'm over-sensitive on this issue and just have to suck it up, however maddening to me. But if I can hear the music of a young person who does have headphones on, I am liable to deliver a little lecture on how they are potentially causing catastrophic damage to their hearing.

@Legend., I’m not trying to push my opinions/tastes/music on others. I’m just trying to prevent them pushing their’s on to me, that’s the whole point!

Anyone mentioned “quivers” yet?
You know the way it goes…
I can fit 10 pairs in my double bag if I remove the bindings.
1 pair of rock hoppers.
1 gs pair
1 pow pow pair
1 all mountain pair
1 back country pair
1 slack country pair
1 touring pair
1 slalom pair
1 de-tuned race pair

You should take up snowboarding. There’s an immediate 50% reduction in quiver size, which gives plenty of room in the bag for a backpack PA system

It's about things you don't get about other peoples skiing. While I do find it annoying and rude, I absolutely get why people would want to blast some loud music while skiing.

I absolutely get why people would want to listen to loud music while skiing. Or driving. Or doing the washing up. I just don't get why they want other people to listen to it too. The only plausible reason is to annoy people. And I don't get why anyone would set out deliberately to annoy random strangers unless they have some serious mental health issues. The sort which lead to much more serious misbehaviour than playing loud music......

Yeah I thought the thread might be a bit of a "unpopular ski opinions" kind of thing. Pointing out things you don't personally "get" that the majority seem to enjoy. Instead it's mainly people picking out things that the vast majority of us also find annoying, which is a little less interesting imo.

I seriously doubt any of them are setting out with the intention of annoying other people, there are much easier ways if that's their goal! They are just inconsiderate and/or completely unaware.

While I am more than happy to cycle (off road but not serious enduro / downhill) with some form of wireless headphones / buds I tried it once when skiing and found it had a negative impact on the skiing experience.

I don't get why people who are experiencing a fantastic holiday in the snowy mountains can get angry over small stuff like whether someone's playing music or not or many of the other 'annoyances' here !
When I'm on holiday it's a welcome change from the hassles of work and a nice change not to get wound up over trivial stuff. As long as nobody tries to steal my beer, I don't really mind what anyone else chooses to do, even if it appears a bit odd to me.

Well, either they're unaware, or they're doing it as a challenge.
I find "unaware" hard to believe, it seems more like a "manspreading" type challenge.
If it was lack of awareness, it would be women as well as men evenly, but I suspect it's mostly men. In which case QED.

A challenge? Honestly some people are overthinking the motivations of people skiing with speakers as much as those with speakers are underestimating how annoying they are. Ime experience it's young groups, one plays the music they all enjoy. I can see why they enjoy it and it's probably more social for them then all sitting on lifts with headphones in. Maybe they are unaware, maybe they just don't care if it annoys people. But to say they purposely do it as a challenge to annoy other people I find hard to believe. Again, there are much easier ways to annoy people if that's your goal.

Don't know about that. If you enjoy the music, hard to imagine an easier way of annoying people. I entirely understand why they do it. I like music but dislike earphones. I play music a lot at home but depending on who's around I wear earphones to avoid inflicting it on my lodgers. I really like music when sailing - lots of different kinds of music can be just right for different sorts of days, different sorts of weather, and lots of boats have speakers in the cockpit. It would be very rare to be close enough to another boat to impinge on their space - and obviously you wouldn't play music loud enough to be heard by others in a marina or a busy anchorage. I do listen to music on the boat but the skipper dislikes music (yes, I know, but he's a lovely man) so I would only ever listen with headphones.
Serious musicians, like Hurtle, either listen properly to music, or don't. I get that, but for most of us, of coarser sensitivities, music can often enhance our enjoyment of other things (I listen a lot to music when driving or cooking). But inflicting it on others is either thoughtless or deliberately annoying.

@pam w, I do listen to music while doing other things, but rarely long works. Mostly I listen to 'bite-sized' content on R3 or R4 while I'm at home doing other things during the day, or in the car. I occasionally use headphones on train journeys but really don't like listening that way: mostly I'd rather not listen to anything at all than use headphones or earbuds.

I find big headphones uncomfortable after a while but I'm hopeless with ear buds - they fall out!

On that, I could not find any in-ear buds which fit me ... until I discovered https://snugs.com/ which is a UK company who do custom ear-bud tips. I can't get a good fit with off-the-peg stuff at all, but I've used two pairs of these a lot over a couple of seasons and they work well. They don't fall out (which would be hyper expensive!).
The disadvantage of using custom tips, aside from cost, is that you can't recharge buds with the tips in place - you have to pull the moulds off each day for recharging.
I still use big over-ear noise cancelling 'phones for air travel - the in-ear noise cancelling (from music ear-buds or 3M in-ear defenders) is better than nothing but it's not as good as over-ear.

This is such a boomer/Karen comment. I am truly stunned. Get your head out of the clouds. People playing music out loud are selfish and oblivious. Don't trivialize serious mental health issues.

Oh, right. I can think of quite a few mental health issues which might cause or contribute to a wish deliberately to annoy strangers. That wish is not customarily considered to be acceptable or even 'normal' (that's not a technical term, of course, I'm using it as shorthand.)

How many groups of 18-21 year women do you really see though? It's a massively skewed sample. I don't disagree that men tend to be more confident (just look at their skiing), so arguably some truth in it. I think if I was to make a comment about "rude women putting their handbags on train seats" I'd rightly be called out as over generalising. At the end of the day does it even matter, if it's annoying it is regardless over the gender of the person doing it.
If I wanted to be annoying I'd stand on people's skis in lift lines

@boarder2020, back in the day I had a chum who had engraved the tails of his skis in English and French, "If you stand on my skis I'll smack your face". Made for some interesting lift queue conversations.

@Noob921, you think that setting out to annoy strangers (for instance by playing loud music at them or being rude and ageist to them on the internet) is indicative of good mental health? I would call it an antisocial personality disorder. But possibly quite a mild case, if the music wasn't THAT loud. I also said it might simply be thoughtless behaviour. You used the term "oblivious". So it seems we might agree, after all.

I think he's suggesting playing loud music in public isn't a sign of poor mental health. I'd kind of agree, as I really don't buy the idea they are doing it to purposely annoy others. 18-21 year olds do lots of inconsiderate and dumb things, I don't think we need to overthink them all or assume there's some underlying issues. I'm sure many will look back on their behaviour and cringe in years to come. The few times I've see people behaving in an aggressive manner in ski resorts it's always been middle aged men that may have drank a bit too much alcohol, not the kids with speakers in their backpack.

Goodness it's all getting a bit tetchy on this thread! FWIW I hate the skier with speaker in backpack thing-it's just inconsiderate to blast the rest us with your sound track. End of.
I was musing about this thread this morning (now that my season is over, I start posting anything that make me feet it isn't). The thing I don't get is why people don't get dressed for skiing when they get up in the morning. So-8am breakfast time, my thermals (top and bottom) and ski trousers are on ready to get out of the door as soon as I can. One friend potters to breakfast in jeans and then has to go and get changed for skiing afterwards. What's that all about?? It ups the faffing for no particular purpose..
|

@Perty, I wear jeans at breakfast cause I my ski trousers are too long! Plus many Alpine hotels are like infernos.

My niece goes out to get the croissants in the morning while I make the tea etc. Only this year she commented that, to quote, "that I'm a mornng person who gets up first to put the tea on, open the curtains etc - and walk around in my pants" I think she would think jeans were over dressing for breakfast.
ps I'm not a morning person and would never go to a hotel breakfast in my pants.
And wear whatever you want for breakfast.
