When I skied with kids we never did it either (or had a sit down lunch) though I will treat myself, now I only have to pay for one person!

We actually just got two very good coffees from 1950. Only 3 euro each. Croissants were 1.5 euro.

That La Rosiere drag lift isn't really that scary, but is one of the longer ones.
I assume they keep that crucial connection as a drag lift because of the winds that can really whip up through the Petit St Bernard pass. |
agree the slope coming down beside / near-ish to it is a gentle blue. Also lift is in 2 sections so any fallers only have half the length the repeat.
@sbooker, if you do go there, (although there is so much snow arriving today / tmr / wed now you probably wont) Just watch the connections if there is high wind, as they will shut them, but generally give you some warning. I've only visited from La Thuile side and didn't get down to La Ros proper as wanted to be in striking distance of a dash back to Italy.

@t44tomo, I have that excursion on my radar for Friday or Saturday or Sunday which are meant to be sunny. We leave Les Arcs on Tuesday so could even do Monday if that is the best day wind wise.

enjoy, pack an extra base layer, La Thuile is known as Little Siberia, its cold at the best of times and the temps are set to drop to minus double figure over the next week...which will be great for the skiing conditions.

@Alastair Pink,
They are due in at about 6.30pm so will report back then. I imagine so. She peppered me with photos all yesterday and today. Mostly of the old architecture and river etc. something about a Picasso? Plenty of sculptures.

My niece lives in Lyon. We stopped off one time on the way back from skiing.
Naturally a bit of a sprawling metropolis but lovely old town centre. Confluence of two major rivers - the Saone and the Rhone. We went to the Gallo-Roman Civilisation Museum which was excellent.

Update.
We woke this morning to light snow but there was only a few inches accumulated overnight I would estimate. But the snow fall rate improved as the day went on.
Visibility was difficult above the tree line. We really are fortunate to be here during this period of snow as there is much more to go at than Tignes as far as tree lined runs goes. There are even some nicely spaced trees. As relative novices we are quite slow through the trees though. It’s very enjoyable though when the turns are soft. Above the trees was different shades of white while in and around the trees were well, mostly of trees. We had a ball though. The whole mountain is soft and to use a cliche it really is a playground - particularly for skiers that don’t get fresh snow that often. There were pockets of safe angle fresh snow when we called it a day at 4.15pm.
It was snowing very heavily at 1800 metres when I went to get dinner ingredients at 5pm. Tomorrow should be good.
As an aside I am still on my 92mm waist skis as I was in Tignes when the guide had us skiing 12 plus inches of snow. (And a fair bit deeper in areas). Phillipe encouraged me not to go to wide skis. He said it would be much easier but with skiing skis I would learn to ski powder better. I must admit it fatigues my legs though. Having never skied anything wider than 95mm (I rented on a powder day at Snowmass when my skis went to Denver instead of Aspen) would my legs cope better with wider and a little longer skis on snow days. I’m thinking I may ditch Phillips’s advice.

@Layne,
I may go for a diversion one day as I expect we’ll be back to France. Lyon seems well positioned for a city break between hills.
I have my radar on Portes de Soleil and Serre Chevalier so Lyon and Marseille would go well in between if we have a car (or maybe didn’t).

@sbooker, the forecast looks very similar tomorrow as it was today so the trees will be your friend again. Have you skied all the tree lined slopes above Les Coches?
I would stick with Phillip's advice. I ski 97 width skis and I don't have a problem skiing powder (well, at least I don't believe I do - I have some video evidence that people may argue to the contrary!). At least I rarely fall these days, enjoy it, seem to get enough float and don't get too tired (considering my age and fitness). What's your weight/height. My kids who are not far off as tall as me (I am 196cm) but considerably lighter (I am 100kgs) ski narrower (92 and 87 iirc) and are OK.
If you are not used to powder skiing it can be fatiguing for sure - as often you are trying to do too much and not relaxed.

I feared we Europeans (well until that brexit malarkey) were heading for egg on our faces in regards to actually have decent snowfall to enjoy. After all your careful planning and family anticipation it was all looking a bit eye watering for the home team
Absolutely superb it's arrived just in time and as you found there's much to ski right there in 1800 and surrounding area. I've a particular soft spot for LA area having started skiing there originally, having so much variety in fairly compact area it easily matches many other places consumately.
Hopefully the clouding will clear out to as the views are pretty good.
Worthwhile trying to get everyone up to Aguille Rouge too, even if they didn't want to ski it as that's pretty special right up there on isolated Peak looking out all around. Easily manageable with your skills I feel though.
The run from there all the way down to Villaroger is very cool too, and with an excellent lunch place in that village right by the lift. Get there promptly though as it's well thought of and has strong demand usually.
Something else that may interest you, we took a trip out with pistuers before lift opening (usually on Wednesday morning and bookable with them) for us it was one of the most memorable moments for my son as one of his highlights there. It was a clear and epically blue no cloud day for us, stunning being up there in such serenity before it all opens.
Also looking forward to further reports, thanks for taking the time to let us all know how you're getting on.

I did that one beautiful morning in Saisies. One to one with a piste patroller, down the corduroy. Magic, and a very interesting young man too - an explosives expert who worked on demolition in the summer. Coffee and (cheap supermarket) cake with the team afterwards was fun but once they were all talking away in Savoyard (they were all very local, which apparently isn't the case in big resorts) my French just wasn't up to the task.

@Layne, We haven’t ventured to the La Plagne side yet. Girls are back now. I’ll leave that for a novelty day. Perhaps Wednesday.
I’m vertically challenged so I’m never making the mistake of meeting you in person. I’m only 72kg most of the time but will be over 80 when I get back after daily croissants and beer (and wine). And this bread ham and cheese diet is very different from my usual low carb/low fat diet.

The ride across the valley on the Vanoise Express is spectacular, both from a scenery and impressive engineering point of view. There's part glass floor, if I remember correctly.
A few rather tedious slow chairlifts at first on the La Plagne side, but then you get to the better lifts and pistes a little further on.

Emily and Lily and Jye and my wife are shattered. They will have a day off snow tomorrow. They’ll go to Bourg for grocery shopping and then go to the pool in the afternoon.
Myself and Tom will cruise around on skis/board. Location will be dependant on visibility. We had some patches of sun while on the La Plagne side today. It would be great to get more of those views but the fresh snow has been amazing.

@Layne,
Took a picnic lunch to the Les Coches warming room today. Nice set up for families who are trying to save a dollar.
On that topic I’ve almost given up. I find myself thinking “oh f*(k it - we’ve spent so much so far we may as well spend some more”. I expect the French government will see an added boost to GDP this quarter thanks to us. Four teenagers are absolutely brutal on the wallet. I don’t know where the boys put the food.

They don't exactly advertise them much but this one and the two new ones on the Les Arcs side are pretty good places to take shelter. If the weather is decent we'll still go al fresco.

Today was bluebird with between 6 and 12 inches of powder depending on where I was on the mountain. We skied between the pistes not far from the lifts and we’re still skiing soft snow at 4pm.
Had to go in for coffee and croissant mid morning as it was cold. Also went in for a plat de jour at lunch to let my fingers warm up.
The girls had a break today. They were shattered. They spent the day in Bourg doing some shopping. They’re cooking tonight. We will all ski tomorrow. With the girls in tow it will be a cruise day checking out the views as there is no snow and blue skies forecast. We will be doing some drag lift practice for our trek to La Rosiere/La Thuile on Saturday or Sunday.
I recognise we’ve been so lucky with weather.
