Hi snowheads,
I’ve posted in snowbuddies but not getting any joy. Just wondered if any of you folk will be in morzine or Avoriaz 27th jan to 3rd Feb. It’s my third visit and I’m on my own, pretty independent but would welcome meeting up with a few people to ski or socialise. Love a quick lunch out on the mountain with a beer. I’m late 30s and a solidish skier, mainly on piste. Let me know if you’re about, thanks so much, andy.

Some reports saying it’s going to be a rainy one in Avoriaz today, others say it’ll come down as a huge dump of snow.
Any idea of where the snow/rain line is today?

It’s horrible in Avoriaz. Chucking it down and most of the lifts shut. Hundreds doing the blue run down to Prodains (which appears to be shut now). So so wet!

Prodains moving again but extremely busy. We’re off to Morzine!

The freezing line was around 1200 at 6:30 AM when I came down the hill.
The car thermometer showed -1 at 1250, and it was right in the brink of big wet snowflakes / sleet.
By 1200 it was 0 and sleet.
At 1000 it was rain

@WindOfChange, at 7am roughly the freeze level doubled from 1200 to 2400 as forecast....due to stay around 2200 all day and night, then dropping a little to 2000 tomorrow. After that it's warm and dry for a few days, then cooler and dry until mid month.
Some mates arrive 20th Jan, naturally I've sent them all my videos, so they are in a for a shock if the weather doesn't improve dramatically after this dry period.
I see you live in Nyon....I have other ski/lake buddies living over there, do you know any of this gang... Tim W, Luke H, Gavin J, Nick, James? Maybe best on PM

Heading to morzine on Monday. Hope this rain doesn't wash too much of the snow away. Looks to be getting cooler and drier next week.

It has rained all day, huge amounts of it. And the road from Taninges to Les Gets is closed again, maybe for 48 hours due to another land slippage before the bridge. You have to go via Thonon.

For anyone travelling out, I'd advise looking at the LG - Page Officielle Facebook page for travel info. I've just seen that the road between Taninges and LG is flooded so will need to go through Thonon. They used FB to communicate about the mudslide last week too, so this looks like their preferred means of distributing travel info.

@Fourstar, I will be in Avoriaz from the 28th Jan to the 3rd of Feb, staying in Avoriaz (on top of Prodains.) Probably skiing with some friends on Monday and Tuesday but you're welcome to join us and then I'll be on my own for the rest of the week so feel free to tag along. I'm a competent skier and spend 30% of the time off piste (conditions allowing.) PM me to discuss further.

Question for the Chatel ... I have noticed the blue run 'La Forestiere' which links the Super Chatel area to Lac Vonnes is almost always closed. Anyone know why this is? It was similar last season but I understood they worked on it during the off-season. Even though its closed it still gets used as seen on the webcam.

@Ozboy, lack of snow last year kept it closed a lot of the time.
It was open in Christmas week and in good shape.
If closed you can take the new lift down to Vonnes if you need to get there.

@DJL, wonder why would it be closed this year when there were is snow - it was closed today while lots of the lower slopes were open - perhaps land/snow slide risk?
I assume It will save quite some time vs downloading in the PDS chair.

Lots of snow bridges have been, or are on the verge of, getting washed away. Water is also flowing in areas you don’t normally see running in winter. Perhaps related to that
|
|
|

Certainly quicker than the lift if the run is open. The footpaths across that bit of the mountain were closed for a while over the last years, I think for risk of mudslide. Might be related to that.

Areas that are streams in summer but get completely snowed over in winter. Is that not a term used in the alps? Certainly used to be one I was familiar with back in Scotland.
Saw one from lindarets chair yesterday in avoriaz at bottom of stash, very close to getting washed out completely by stream underneath. What made me think this was a possibility here

@Nelbert75, @DJL, I thought that run followed a cat track? The terrain above it looks quite steep and perhaps unstable.

Don’t know that particular run off the top of my head. Just speculating on one of a number of reasons for its closure. It’s not a lack of snow anyway

Today has been a cracking day, much better than expected.
Morzine looks like it really took a hit with all the rain earlier in the week, but the other sectors are generally really nice.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Agree the pistes are in a surprisingly good state even in Morzine / Les Gets, but it looks like back to square one on the off piste with thin cover and big slides down to the soil in lots of places. I was lower down today though so might be better higher up?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Queequeg, agreed, I don’t think I’ve seen so many slides and fractures in the snow as I have these last couple of days.
Off piste is going to be seriously sketchy for a while, even if there is an oh big dump.

It’s avalanche 5. Offpiste is a no go. If you don’t know that then go and do the avalanche awareness courses running all season.

@Nelbert75, afaik, but I wouldn’t argue about it, it seems more generally used for snow cover over crevasses. At least round Chamonix it is...
