10 January 2016. Went up a little late this morning. Not much point in rushing as the higher lifts were closed and it was windy even at the top of the Derby.
Stayed in the Arc 1600, 1800 and Peisey Vallandry areas. The snow at the top was ok and even found some softer places to ski, but most pistes had been effected by the rain. The lower you went the stickier it became. At least for my skis.
The higher areas were ok and we even managed to find a little nice soft untracked snow. The snow in the forest was ok at the start, but heavier the lower you went.
Overall today was OK, but vis went in and out. The snow and sleet came back later in the day and it was raining lower in the valley. The snow/rain limit was about 1600 - 1800 m today.
They say more snow is coming in the next few days. I hope so as I think we have had enough rain now!
More tomorrow. Photos for today are already posted on the Les Arcs Winter page in the January 2016 Album. Enjoy!

@Piemonster, Very. They own most of Arc 2000 and a few other places.
For those interested it is snowing nicely in Arc 2000.

Excellent.
It's going to be a torturously long week at work this week. Might blow a day looking for a decent restaurant for arrival Saturday.

The restaurant at the bottom of our apartment block (La Cime) Le Savoy has a very good reputation. We have eaten there and it is good.

Pretty much 1 minute walk from the block we are staying in. Trip advisor suggests it's worth a punt.
Guess I'll blow a day looking at touring gear instead.

Hi thefatcontroller, if you own a property in Arc 2000 I assume you know the area well, so I was hoping you could advise me on what is the best way out of 2000 in the morning say if one wanted to get to La Plagne? I will be staying in the Aguille Rouge hotel in a couple of weeks and the piste map is a little confusing as to the best way out of the 2000 bowl and quickest way to get across to Vallandry from there, or even just getting to nearest lift/piste in the morning to cut down on walking

@Minion1980, quickest way is to ski down to the Bois de l'Ours chairlift (just below Arc 1950, easy to get to from 2000) and then the Arpette blue, Charmettoger blue, Plan Bois blue, Retour Plan blue and drop down to the Vanoise Express at Plan Peisey if you want to head to La Plagne.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@rob@rar, I would challenge that! We always go marmotte, arcabuelle. This gives a lovely long blast down to the Vanoise. The Bois route leave a long dull run. Can't see much time difference in it.

You know it makes sense.
|
@thefatcontroller, you're right, not much in it. Decider for me would be how long the lift queues are. Two queues v. one queue.
The blues across to Vallandry/Peisey are cat tracks in places, but if your intention is to get to La Plagne you can zoom across pretty quickly. And if you're keen there's a nice little off-piste pitch to spice it up

@thefatcontroller, i am puzzled why you would bus to 1600? Handy, you suggest, but isn't it just a case of a short ski to the Bois de L'Ours and you can ski into 1600 from there? How long does the bus take?
Whilst I am posting... We're taking the kids for the first big family trip this year in April. 9, 7 and 3.5 yrs. 9 and 7 yr olds have been through lessons at Hemel, so am looking forward to getting them onto the real mountains. We're staying with Esprit in 2000. The two oldest boys and I are very excited, Mrs Richie_s is less so - as she runs the London Marathon a week or so later and is concerned in case she does some damage in the mountains. Anyhow...
A) Any recommendations for local eateries for our chalet host night off? (kids, therefore good pizza and pasta places or burgers is a good bet)
B) I've been on an annual ski trip for 15 years... but, never had a good 'French Onion Soup' - does anyone have recommendations for the best place to get one in Les Arcs?

If the lifts to the top of the Arc 2000 bowl are shut (avy risk, wind, etc) the bus gives you the option of skiing in 1600/1800.

@Richie_S, Re-read my post. All the lifts out of 2000 were shut today and all the high lifts in the bowl. Option was 1 or 2 runs or the bus.

@rob@rar, It was bizarre in the bowl today, Varet, Lanchetes, Bois etc were all shut. Winds were high but seen them open in worse. Must be avalanche. The wind is forecast stronger over the next few days so can see the bus being used a bit.

@thefatcontroller, I think a combination of wind and avy risk. The Les Arcs pisteurs posted a photo on Facebook of one of them leaning in to the wind at the top of one of the lifts. As you know, it was relatively calm on my side of the ridge (although it is not unusual to have very different wind strengths in 2000 compared to 1600/1800.
I agree, I'm not anticipating any of the high lifts being operational for the next couple of days if the forecast comes to fruition.

@Richie_S, could maybe ski down to Villaroger? There's a restaurant there called goyet. Stayed there last week and the soup was delicious! Nice skiing down to there too.

@Richie_S, I have only stayed in Arc 2000 once and on one day all the significant runs in Arc 2000 were closed due to avalanche risk so we got the bus around to 1600 and enjoyed skiing in the trees. The next year we bought an apartment in 1600.

It stayed warm overnight, looking at the trees I'd guess the snowline was about 1900m.

@rob@rar, Lots of blasting taking place now. Still snowing heavy here, think snowline is due to drop as the day progresses.

Yes, it's pretty much as forecast. About 10cm of snow added overnight at 2300m. I'm very sheltered where I am at 1800m, but even here there's a bit of a breeze so will no doubt be windy up top. Currently switching between sleet and snow and nothing at the moment. Think I'll wait until it gets colder before heading out.

I've just spoken to an Evo2 guy in 1950 and they've canned today's sessions (maybe just the morning ones?). All the 1950 lifts are closed at present and the wind is fierce. Taking the cabriolet up to 2000 won't work because they appear to be stopping people skiing down to 1950 from there.

Been following these updates with interest. Currently stuck in 1950, contemplating getting the bus across to 1600.
Does anyone have a current/recent view on Combettes beginner area? Trying to find a relatively wide & quiet section of piste for my mum to practise on... Bit concerned it's going to be manic with nothing open this side!

@JP89, No idea but we have skied the bowl previously in these conditions and if you ever want your mother to ski again i wouldn't recommend taking her out in 2000 today. It will be horrendous.

@thefatcontroller, in the Belambra in 2000 so, judging from your photo, very near you. Went down to 1950 on cabriolet late this morning but a waste of time so has a beer. Lift had closed so had to get bus back. Bought a days internet so downloaded Yuge. Interesting. Looks like weather will keep everything here closed again so will brave the 2 buses to 1800 and attempt to ski Peisey Vallandrey tomorrow. Still shockingly windy here. Brrrrrr.

@maggi, We own in La Cime beside Lanchette lift. Yup, hoping wind dies down tomorrow so at least there will be more open in 1600 and 1800. Wednesday looking best.
