Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I really can't think of too many resorts (maybe Bareges in the Pyrenees) where you can be the only people lapping powder on nigh on empty unpisted pistes - and then the trees as well!

Is Monetier usually like that (empty pistes even when freshly snowed)? I've spent a couple of weeks in Serre Chevalier, but staying in Briancon or Chantemerle so skiing mostly over that side. When I did a morning in Monetier last year I was amazed that at ~10am we had most of the lower pistes to ourselves, was fantastic. It wasn't a peak week but there were many more people in the other sectors, even a few more on the Ciboult at the top. I assumed it just happened to be a quiet day or one where everyone else had decided to go elsewhere, but given your comment and pics I'm wondering if that's normal for Monetier? I tend to stick to groomed runs rather (I'm a lot less experienced a skier than you) so no need for fresh tracks, but having perfectly groomed empty reds allowed some tremendous charging runs I rarely feel comfortable doing when there are other people around.

@Drogue, Monetier out of the busy period is far quieter than the other three sectors. And yes you can often find yourself alone on empty pistes, especially the one we were on today as it's a little bit awkward to get to.

That particular piste is great for getting people into skiing fresh as it's often not pisted so it tends to be not so busy. And the pistes off the drag can be empty as long as there is no racing going on.

The red pistes off Cibouit and Yret tend to see more people but again never too busy, whilst the blacks are not normally bashed.

However if it's windy Yret is often closed, or if it is open can be very windy as you near the ridge, hence Col du Vent!!

Thanks for the recommendation. It's only my second time skiing in Serre Che so I don't really know the villages even though I've been out around Briancon during the past 6 summers or so!

Very fuzzy head this morning after a bit of a geezonaire get together.

Started off in the Cocoon, then up to the Vielle Ferme before having a great meal in the rotisserie there, and then made the mistake of stopping off in Mojos on the walk home (again).

Leisurely start at around 11:00 and up to Frejus and then a few laps using the Barres drag and then a long traverse of that to get to some sweet lines in the trees dropping in above Frejus and then along Route Frejus and then off that skiing the terraces before Prairies.

Beautiful conditions and light cold snow.

Did the laps hoping Vallons would open up as every now and again it started up but they were obviously having tech issues, and now back home see it's working rolling eyes

OH says best ski of the season, though think that might be more to do with the viz Toofy Grin

Yesterday was a git on the work / home front, sale on a house we're selling fell through (second one since Sept), then not even 24 hrs later, Agent rings up to say someone has offered the full asking price, hopefully third time lucky!

British Army are out in front of us beasting themselves from the looks of things!

No-one else has bitten, so...

The moss indicates north. The tree remains damper there because the sun never shines on it to dry it out.

What can I say, me and weathercam went up early birds to Monetier, it was tipping it down and nobody around, so we ended lapping Bachas and Cibouit chairs, the snow was light, fluffy and boot to knee deep, after 4 runs we were knackered so retired to take care of a few bits and bobs we both had lined up!
ps: top of Cibouit chair is 1000m vertical to the resort so, no, we weren't lightweights!

Still only 47/81 pistes open. Why ? Other resorts seem to be nearing 90% . Not enough snow ? Not enough staff to piste them ? Too much wind ? Don't seem to be many reds open. We are seriously thinking of moving resorts to the northern resorts where there is more open. Still got 2 weeks so it will probably be ok but the rate at which pistes are getting open does seem rather slow ?

@backhojo, over 50% more runs have opened in the last week, they seem to be a bit slow in prepping new ones but that's quite a big change in a week?

Hopefully these forecasts of 10 degrees next Friday don't come true. Shocked

To the more knowledgeable, if for example onthesnow.co.uk's long term forecast were to be 100% correct, how would it affect conditions on Saturday 23rd for example?
(I know that the forecasts should be taken with a LARGE pinch of salt)

@backhojo 55/81 today and I think it was up to 57 at one point. Plenty to play on off the sides too so doubt that you'll get bored even if nothing else opened by the time you arrive (unlikely). Been here all week with a group who ski and board pretty hard and we haven't.

Out on the piste skis today and twas very pleasant though very windy and very cold, which put made to many Frenchies after lunch.

Even with the strong winds pistes were excellent.

More have opened up though with the strong winds some top lifts were closed.

For the first time this season we skied down the Alphand to the Station for brunch then up Prorel and down to the Rocher Blanc chair and we were the only ones over there it seemed.

Coming back down the Casse de Boeuf from the top it was empty till it linked up with the Marteau.

Track log https://www.strava.com/activities/471491050

And ironically had the first difficulty of getting up my road in the van with all the wind blown snow that had created a huge drift!!

Meant to be windier tomorrow not too sure what to do, awaiting what the CAF might be proposing but nothing on their FB yet ?

Maybe a tour up to Bois de Granon ?

@KenX, safer to go off piste then Toofy Grin

Seriously the volume of snow getting transported by these strong winds is alarming, and the windblown snow does not bond well as the crystals have been smashed in the wind and no not have the adhesion of fresh snow.

This is the snow drift at the bottom of our road, nothing spectacular, but makes you think that if that's happening in the valley just imagine the volumes of snow at altitude!

Plan this morning is to do a mini ski tour with the dogs from Val des Pres to the Bois de Granon - snow might be good or horrible, only one way to find out!

Hmmm..still not convinced...rate of change seems to be really slow. Only 58 of 82 pistes open today. Link from monetier back still looks like it's closed ? Looking at the three valleys they are 90 % open. Looks like snow depth is falling higher up...more snow needed. Montgenevre seams to have opened up a lot more but Italy looking rough (Milky Way area). Got until Friday to make the call on "should I stay or should I go"

@backhojo, the link back can often be closed due to wind. Top pistes also. There are a couple that are rarely open. And with an avalanche yesterday, perhaps they are being cautious. I suspect lack of people in the resort may also be a factor.
There will still be plenty of skiing available, but if you want to go elsehwere, it is your loss.
