Today rocked, kickers, jumping fences, little pockets of secret untouched powder, sunshine, far less people than the last few weeks, still an abundance of morons around but it's like a car park car crash - knock for knock imo. Saw a good few crashes involving airbourne snowboarders picking off the ski stragglers on the sides of the piste, and countless skiers losing a ski and going down wixi on their backs
Also if anyone sees a petition lying around, in tipi or the start bar, or anywhere for that matter, just sign it. It's a petition to get a permit for a snow park on lauberhorn or mannlichen, even if you hate snow parks and snowboarders please sign it, at least the more acrobatic ones amongst us will be contained in one area, leaving the piste empty of "idiot snowboarders".
Personally I think it will get shot down in flames, there must be a reason murren and first have parks yet the lauberhorn/mannlichen areas don't. I blame the lauberhorn race, too much revenue for too little work, makes them all lazy and can't be bothered with investing in the area.

A few years ago they had a mini parked at the bottom of Wixi. Is that not snowpark enough?

Guys & Galls, do us all a favour please... When you get down the racetrack, do the bumps lift 1 or 2 times.
Langentreien (the section of the racetrack along the lift) is wel worth it, and it may just make the difference to keep the lift!
Bumps lift is especially important for beginners (and thus us at skischool), as it serves the easy terain on both sides of the lift.
If you saw some crazy loonatic today going at loonatic speeds down everything... was me, i was skitesting, and quite Enjoyed the Stoeckli GS's
2 Little demons on your feet telling you: "Go fast you idiot, or we will punish you" (and they keep their word... at low speeds... they don't turn)

Get the wasch bar to make a snowpark on the left side of bumps like there used to be and I'll be there every day. Just remembered at the start of the season I went straight down the T bar track to the bottom, lift guy went mental at me so I waved at him, he went more mental, as a result I don't think I'm welcome there anymore.
Where you turn left off bumps to go back to the T bar is a rope on the left of the piste, now that is a fun jump there

doctoressie, Lauterbrunnen is a pretty dull place and gets very little sunshine. The only advantage is that you will get a seat on the train to Wengen or Grindelwald. I would have thought Wengen was a better choice as there are nursery slopes in the village and at Kleine Scheidegg and it is really nice for beginners to get up the mountain so to speak. There is also a lovely blue run to Brandegg as they progress and the apple fritters at the restaurant are a great reward. Murren is not the best resort for beginners but worth a visit with or without skis to go to the 007 restaurant at the top of the Schilthorn. A trip to the Jungfraujoch on a clear day is memorable - you can do it in half a day and still get some skiing in. Have a wonderful holiday. |
There is nothing left in the village. Both Wengiboden and Figeler are going to close real soon, if not already... (not sure, haven't been in the village during daytime for the last few days)
If it snows down to the village, nothing will stick, as the ground is several degrees over zero.
Small figeler (the running carpets) still has snow, but with adults you don't stay there for long... unless they are hopeless ;P
As for the runs to brandegg, grund and wengen... Don't expect much of them after this week.
KS Tschuggen Aspen Grund is now closed from Aspen, and they run a bus from Aspen to Grund.
Brandegg run is crap, from hearsay (very brown)
Wengen run will not last much longer either... Soonish going to be closed from Almend.
the finish section of the racetrack is closed too (Thanks to all the punters that scraped it dead... )
The red run to mary's cafe is still covered, but very very slushy.

Elizabeth B, as a 4 year old the teachers always took us down bumps and in those days it really did get bumpy

D G Orf, Maybe thats a good idea... after they get splattered into a tree they might see the NEED to be able to stop...
makes teachers life more easy if the kids see the need ;P

Makes perfect sense to me to keep the boarders to the park so we get to ski the rest of the piste.
Personally, I think it's a good thing they're building parks. Mixes up the sliding a bit. There's only so much cruising on the perfectly smooth piste before it becomes a big yawn by day 5, day 6... On a low snow year like this one, when off-piste is often off-limits, thank god for moguls. Even though I'm terrible at it, 50 metre of it can keep me busy for a couple hours!

With a bit of luck again next year. Skischool leader asked if I would be back, so it mostly depends on the dayjob... (with the indication it should be possible)

D G Orf, Elizabeth B,
Just booked Lauterbrunnen for next February half term, we're taking the kids out of school for a week and getting in 2 weeks skiing. I don't think that the snow can be any worse than this year. I will be back much nearer the time asking for advice on where to eat, meanwhile I'm just looking forward to it. We will inspect when we are staying in Interlaken in August and see if we can find our apartment, it's apartments Oberland, Interhome C3822/105c, but I don't suppose that you know where this is?
This will suit my kids, Sam is now 10 and loves long runs home, if the snow is down to the bottom we've got a good choice, Schilthorn right down to the village, Eigergletscher to Wengen, then send the kids down the toboggan track or down to Grindelwald, a splash in the pool and the train back. I've got to work out the logistics of the toboggan though.

Jane L, I'm not sure about the apartments. The hotel Oberland is in the centre of the village, so it may be near that? Lauterbrunnen isn't that big though!!

Jane L, you could hire the tobbogan at central sport in Wengen and leave it there in the morning perhaps ? I'm not sure otherwise how you'd do it as I don't think they'd fit in a left luggage locker at Wengen Station
No idea where apartments Oberland are I'm afraid

girlfriend reckons at least 20 cm of new snow on top, they are setting off controlled avalanches at the moment, snow line seems to stop just where I live. Visibility looks pretty crap to be honest but I like it like that sometimes, far less people and you can work on less ballsy jibby things.

How big are the moguls? I'd like to stay away from the LandRover size ones (never mind the house size ones)
|
There wouldn't be any if the ski schools didn't follow EXACTLY the tracks of the person in front of them.
Do skiers like moguls then? I just assumed they were a waste product of skiing.

Long before there are parks, skiers have been doing areials on (I should say OFF) big moguls. But that's not me. I just "make it" through them to get to whereever I REALLY want to be. Still, when the snow is soft, it's quite nice snaking through them. Nothing humbles a wannabe expert skier than 20 metre of house-size moguls.

Anyone in Wengen know if Black Rock is open? I was in Wengen end of January and it was shut the whole week, but looking at the Wengen website, there still appears to be a good depth of snow up there...comparatively speaking of course!

AdrianV, Not 2 days ago when I took some Stoeckli GS's up at Eigergletcher.
Nice skis btw... Might actually buy them... if you guys promise to give me a completely empty piste!
They kindof like to go 20 times faster then the average 'user of the pistes'

Do they still have a Stoeckli test centre in the area?

Elizabeth B, no idea... Saw a Stoeckli stand at the GGM station on mannlichen with the 2008 line of stoecklis
Not for public to test though
They look really nice graphic wise, the entire line

I don't really have much to report today, didn't get out of bed until 1pm, hungover/drunk as hell. Went up on the 3pm cablecar, visibility was less than zero, super disorientated. Managed 2 runs on mannlichen before my lift spliff crippled me and I had to go home.
I think it was snowing, certainly was at 5pm when I went up to allmend for a quick cruise home.
