been snowing in wengen, about 5 to 10 cm of snow, looks like that wet crystally stuff though. I seriously doubt anything is left on top, it was so windy last night. Maybe that was the good thing about the rain, it stuck the snow to the ground before the wind came.

Hi Jungfrau folks,
I've booked a short break to Lauterbrunnen at Easter for my family with some first time skiers included. I was wondering whether Lauterbrunnen is indeed a good option at that time, can you go to he whole jungfrau area fairly easy? Does the Jungfrauregion and maybe particularly Murren have enough runs for first time evers (and not the least important: at that time?, especially regarding the bad snow reports I read here of lately)
I'd really like to hear some comments from you experts and furthermore whether the train to "top of the world"is indeed that ridiculously expensive, even though you have a ski pass.
Cheers

Hi doctoressie,
You'll be fine in Lauterbrunnen as you can access Wengen and Murren very easily. There are nursery slopes at Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen (both over 2000 metres) so no problems with snow for your first-timers.
If you have a ski-pass it costs CHF52 to visit the Top Of Europe (Jungfraujoch). Pretty good value really.
I visit Wengen every year at Easter - it's usually great - there's always plenty of snow at altitude.

stab, Just got down from mannlichen after taking things easy because of a pulled calf muscle. Only did 2 runs down to the Mann chair, but the piste was REALLY good, quite a lot of new crisp snow. Once the low cloud had gone it was the best of all week. Nice snow and blue skies. The rest of our group are over at First so I`ll let you know how that went, later.
Sorry to hear of your catalogue of disasters- things have to improve from there, surely.
doctoressie, Lauterbrunnen gives you access to all the areas, but after half hour or longer journey to both Wengen and Murren. Wengen is probebly a bit less intimidating for beginners than Murren , but I could be Wrong ( What do you think Chris Brookes?) I don`t think the train to the Jungfraujoch is extortionately expensive. The experience up there is worth evey penny IMHO
Chris - Murren on Thursday sounded just like Kliene Scheidigg. Hope today was better.

doctoressie, Lauterbrunnen is a pretty dull place and gets very little sunshine. The only advantage is that you will get a seat on the train to Wengen or Grindelwald. I would have thought Wengen was a better choice as there are nursery slopes in the village and at Kleine Scheidegg and it is really nice for beginners to get up the mountain so to speak. There is also a lovely blue run to Brandegg as they progress and the apple fritters at the restaurant are a great reward. Murren is not the best resort for beginners but worth a visit with or without skis to go to the 007 restaurant at the top of the Schilthorn. A trip to the Jungfraujoch on a clear day is memorable - you can do it in half a day and still get some skiing in. Have a wonderful holiday.

Lauterbrunnen is generally cheaper than Wengen though.

Can you find out if the snowpark is built? Last time I was there it was just one kicker and some rails on the oberjoch and then a few rails in the proper park, no half pipe either.
today was one of those rare occasions I had to work, quickly jetted to scheidegg from mannlichen so didn't really notice how it was. Had a major off piste day, pretty much all east facing faces are great at the moment, hosenplatz and backside of the lauberhorn then into the trees were good.
Boarded down the slegde run to allmend just now, was alright, not a lot of snow in there.
I'm alledgedly coming down the chutes on tschuggen down towards the gummi lift tomorrow, don't know about that myself, avalanche beepers have been reserved though

stab, Afraid no report from the rest of our party about the snowpark. If it had been good I think the boarders in our group would have been talking all about it. Sorry
Let`s hope that extra metre falls tonight.
Chris, how is Murren?

Brian T, ah well. Thanks anyway.
Another crap day in the crap jungfrau region, raining in crappy wengen, windy ice sleet crap flying around on top. Crappy Mannlichen closed, at this time of writing only crappy tschuggen T bar and crappy arven open. Still, at least I'm not in crappy murren, I think the crappy schilthorn has had more crap closed days than open days this crap season.

stab, if you had taken more notice of my forecast you would have known that this was going to be a crappy week and would not therefore have been in such a crappy mood.
Here is the next forecast, more warm weather and rain until late Wednesday this week, Thursday should be cold enogh for some light snow but don't expect more than 10cm in the village, Friday it will probably rain again at resort level but it might just fall as snow, in the longer term expect to see further rain certainly at resort level and maybe higher, it looks as if the weather is slowly starting to warm up I'm afraid
stab, sorry it's another crappy forecast

Yeah I know, I ignored it. When it dumped on monday I really believed that it would stay cold and we would miss the rain.

Elizabeth B, Mine ( I'm allowed to hope!) is for un-seasonal unexpected drop in temperatures with snow on the weekend followed by bright sunny days ... but then again I've never been within 20 miles of the place - and I shall live in hope and expectation ... and enjoy myself ....
If the weather stays 'warmer' is there still 'higher skiing' ? this thread in the lst couple of days 'suggests' not ???

Mannlichen (2200m) is the best local option when things get a bit margial later in the season, but it does get a little soft in the afternoon. Further afield, the Birg area at Murren is pretty snowsure but quite limited. Damn sight better than nothing though. Higher still is the Schilthorn at almost 3000m, but this is served by a small (by modern standards) cable-car which runs only once every half-hour. The piste is a bit steep too which makes it a bit iffy for mixed-ability groups.
Think good thoughts

Are you sure the Schilthorn cable car is every 1/2 hour? I've never had to wait more than about 10 mins.

Lucky you! It goes at 8 mnutes and 38 minutes past the hour - from sbb.ch:
Details Bahnhof/Haltestelle Datum Zeit Dauer Umst. Reise mit
1 Birg 03.03.07 ab 10:08 0:04 0 SB
Schilthorn an 10:12
2 Birg 03.03.07 ab 10:38 0:04 0 SB
Schilthorn an 10:42
3 Birg 03.03.07 ab 11:08 0:04 0 SB
Schilthorn an 11:12
4 Birg 03.03.07 ab 11:38 0:04 0 SB
etc etc
* edit* But maybe it's like Mannlichen which keeps going if there's a queue. Problem with the Schilthorn is it's just single cabin so it can't do many trips even if they want it too.

Up top is great, don't know about today as I'm not sure if I want to go up today, yesterday was for me awesome. Deep snow, a bit of crust and I didn't see anyone follow me.
Even if napalm drops on mannlichen it will still be usable, Wixi and lauberhorn won't take much to be killed if it warms up a lot though.

yeah in high season they keep sending it up and down when it's full, in the quiet times it generally sucks over there, I always mis time it, or I get the timing right and they close when I get to the top because half the mountain slid down across the pistes.

stab, Thank you , that's wonderful. The doom and gloom in the media generally has even got to me --- even though I should know better as I can see snow from the garden.
I'm afraid the individual areas mean nothing to me --- yet. Looking forward to enjoying 'your' domaine.

Apart from the 80km/h winds on scheidegg today I had fun, only lift open was arven and an intermittent fallboden, I just kept running down the race track and up to allmend, then train back to scheidegg. Must have done that 4 or 5 times.
This weird hail/ice ball stuff coming down, some moments of heavy snow on top today but generally too windy. Tomorrow should yield some interesting spots that would have had some shelter.
It's a shame that tourists go home on saturdays generally, they miss how the swiss really behave on the mountain, I don't think things like "you disgust me you piece of sh..t, you aren't even swiss, why should I listen to you, it's my mountain auslander blah blah blah, du hollandisch schlampe" are acceptable things to say to my girlfriend, she's only doing her job, she doesn't deserve any of that. And besides that she isn't dutch either. Seriously every saturday is the same story around here and I'm sick of it.
Shan't type anymore as I could come across as a bit harsh and I don't want to give the cursing censor a hard time.

stab, the best bit is that those people who are cursing have probably come from somewhere like basle and are not local at all, in general I've found the local Swiss say those who live no further away than the far end of either lake to be very nice and polite, often more so than a number of Brits and Yanks who I frequently here moaning about prices in mountain restaurants of the time it takes to go up the mountain on the train

by my reckoning, and I wouldn't pay too much attention to it as my reckoning isn't that scientific but this http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/snow_forecast.asp?resortID=73 shows a falling freezing level and snow/rain.
Wednesday looking like being the wettest, BUT, if today is dumping on top, which it is then surely wednesday can be counted as a snow day because the FL is dropping.
edit: bug, seems to have stopped snowing since I left the mountain.
