Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

eddiethebus, Very Happy great weather for it. Best weather we've had since around new year's eve. But I'm torn... as much as I love having sunshine, I'm not too happy about what it's doing to the snow.

Skied down into Trient today . Still able to find some untracked.

The far left of the Van couloirs was surface hoar frost at the top and not been that heavily skied. The first one you come to ( skiers right had tons of big avalanche debris at the bottom- would avoid that one

Arrived in les houches about 4pm yesterday.
While the village seems really busy, the queues for the bus weren't overly long... or was that just me being incredibly optomistic?
Really looking forward to the next two days skiing with my daughter. Fingers crossed we'll be able to find some relatively quiet spaces. snowHead

Spent yesterday at La Tour/Vallorcine. Some crowds, but even at the peak around 1130 we didn't wait more than 5-10 minutes for the chairlift. Snow conditions were pretty skiied out; some soft stuff still available, particularly under Tete de Balme. The front side (La Tour) was choppy and frozen early in the day but softened up beautifully. The temps are supposed to stay pretty consistent: cold at night, warm and sunny all day for the next few days, so expect it to be crunchy when you get going. Some new snow forecast for Saturday. All in all, not miraculous snow conditions but everything's open and the weather is perfect. So everyone stay away! I would expect similar conditions at Brevent/Flegere.

Everything accessible from the Herse chair at GM was totally skied out today. Only did a couple of pitches (I've come down with a cold, so feeling less than fabulous) and I really had to hunt for anything remotely softish. The rest was hardpacked moguls.

Looking down at the pistes, they didn't seem rammed but still a fair amount of people. Home run was quite quiet when I skied down just before 3pm but very scratchy

A teeny tiny amount, possibly. But I'll take it!

GM this morning = worlds biggest mogul field, including all of the the front side and Logan Glacier. I didn't see Pas de Chèvre but assume that it was similar.

Over the Col Du Passon there is still soft snow, between the tracks, above 2000m. Below 2000m a hard sun crust.

Is turning? More like has turned. Found a few unmogulled bits at Flegere and Brevent today but it was unbreakable sun-baked crust on the lower pitches with breakable crust on the higher pitches for the first half of the day. After lunch, things were marginally softer.

Thoroughly enjoyed the last couple of days skiing les Houches with my daughter. Surprisingly uncluttered and well prepared pistes. Wish I wasn't going home tomorrow Sad

I do wish in these conditions CMB would get the piste bashers out a bit more. a lot of resorts will have them grooming pistes all day but I'm still yet to ride a groomed piste all season Sad

Hi People
So i've been keeping an eye on this thread for a couple of weeks as we are off to chamonix tomorrow....very excited! will busy packing tonight and wondered how many layers to take as we only have one suitcase between two of us - how cold is it at the moment? Bearing in mind the last two years i've been skiing in late March when i didnt need any extra layers at all!
Also (not really weather related, sorry, but hopefully someone can give me a tip) - which are the easiest runs at Grand Montets - i'm not quite as advanced as the boyfriend (who will love it there) but would like to try at least attempt a couple of the least steep runs!
thanks Smile

emski27, check Cham meteo for weather. I'd recommend bringing extra layers because it looks like it will get cold again over the next week.

There are only two pistes at GM marked as blue but both have sections that would be red in any other ski area. There is another one marked as blue that is just a winding narrow cat track with a sheer dropoff to one side – this one is not steep.

that looks like an semi invert to head on the airbag lol Very Happy

emski, most of the reds up grand montets arent too taxing, although it does depend on conditions. When they get icy then can be a nightmare. There's a bit of fresh snow expected the next couple of days (snowing up brevent this afternoon!) so it should all be ok. I'd say the trickiest red is the one from the top of the herse chair so if you stick to the bochard and everything to the right (looking up) you'll be ok Smile The easiest probably being the run down to plan joran.

I think its supposed to get a bit colder, but i'd check chamonix meteo if i were you Smile

Arno, Cheers - A quick google search turned up this with some amusing comments:

http://www.summitpost.org/couloir-des-cosmiques/186837

I've never quite 'got' Chamonix even with a couple of tame days with a guide. However that video hints at the hidden stuff that as an occasional visitor I've yet to (and unlikely to) unearth.

eddiethebus, Les Houches was very well pisted today....pity about the fog though. A few small mogul meadows (fields are up on GM!) and good quality snow under Kandahar chair. Perhaps the lack of visibilty kept the crowds away.emski27, come to LH for confidence boosting piste skiing. snowHead

No fooling this forum - I won't bother posting my Yeti pics.....
Had a great three and a half days in Cham. The best snow (apart from the Vallee Blanche which I recommend even for boarders) was off to the right of Floria in Flegere.
Thanks for the tips and the pics Zero-G.

I did very little skiing earlier this week and none in the past few days due to lurgy. Am ready to ski today – can anyone tell me what conditions are like on any of the mountains? Visibility, temps and wind basically look the same for all mountains today.

Thanks all. I don't think the very light dusting of snow we received last night will have done anything to soften the slopes. I'll let the buses decide my fate, whichever bus comes first is where I'll ski today Smile

It was heaps better out there than I thought it would be! Last night's meagre dusting was enough to provide my skis with some traction off piste and I found a few small pockets of softer stuff. Those pockets aren't soft any more, though, I skied them out Toofy Grin
