Was there on Saturday, and am afraid to report that anywhere below 1800 requires very good edges - man made base in very cold conditions does not pleasant skiing make. Nothing significant forecast for the next few days, other than getting colder (and harder, shinier and generally more crapola)
Still, I am sure someone more local than I will come along and tell you all how great it is and to ignore my post

I seem to recollect it was there last year, just know marked. The pedestrian track from the top of col de la chal towards gd. col is new but I can't imagine snowcrazy was referring to that...

MarjMJ, In fairness, the conditions up on the Grand Col made amends.....it was just getting to the Transarc which was awful, and the last few hundred yards back down to the funicular which were really bad.

Arriving on Saturday and staying in 1950. I see it is possible to book and pay for parking in advance does anybody know if it works out any cheaper than paying when there?
|
|
|

|

kevinrhead, think it costs the same, but you might have a better chance of getting a place if you book in advance as it get's real busy next week and there are more tickets sold than places to park, hence the price 80+ euro for a week. There is a free outdoor parking down the road at 'pre esprit'. I park there when I drive up. There is a chair lift and a free bus that stops there.
bertie bassett, The walking track has also been around for a while. Not new this year either.
ringingmaster, They have made the cross country track round the new lake now so it has just been moved rather than missing.
Sorry folks still nobody has found (all) the changes. Still the 19th is not far off. Remember some are only little changes, you need to look hard. but there is one or two big ones.
Guvnor, I am pleased you are posting it as it is as well. You are right, going down to Arc 1600 for the last 200m is not fun. Just ice with a tiny layer of crystals and rock hard if you fall on it.
As for an update.
The weather is just getting colder, down to -14 at times today maybe even lower. All the pistes below 2000m are just rock hard and icy. It is all artificial snow now, they have the canons blasting as much as possible. The top of AR has opened, nice snow up there but that's where EVERYONE is going. Do I need to say more.
The grand col is good but starting to get skied out. Going down to Arc 2000 and 1950 by the different routes is ok but busy at times.
As fo over to Peisey Vallandry. The top open area is ok, but as soon as you go below the middle blue traverse track then it is rock hard icy man made snow and only the blue with the canons is open and the bottom of the Blue into Peisey and the Van Express is a nightmare. Going into Vallandry is not possible on open runs. But you can make it down. We did it once just to see but I would not do it again until they do something with the pistes. The area round the Derby is getting very worn and watch out for the irrigation ditches, they are not full of snow yet and make for a nasty surprise on the different pistes down to the lift.
On the Arc 1800 side they have worked hard to keep the run down from the cachette to the transarc open. The Arpette really needs to be fixed asap. It was not working when I went past but they said it might later.
On the Transarc side the one main piste down to the bottom of 1800 main pistes is ok but like everywhere else rock hard man made snow. Oh joy happy days.
Some of the locals say it may snow soon but i think this is more wishful thinking than anything else. My main source who shall remain nameless says it will not snow much till Jan. I do so hope he is wrong but he is not very often.
All in all, if people were honest, we and every other local resort need new snow. I read about the lovely snow in Espace Killy, well I was there and it was not that lovely and only any good higher up. I wonder what great conditions really mean sometimes.
Hope to post better news soon

Breaking news in 1950. For any SCGB members as I know many are on here and read this thread. You can now get discounts in all the ski shops in Arc 1950, go to there web site for details. They all have different names but, they are really all just one company. I call that clever marketing. Anyway having been busy this week it is now sorted so enjoy. Same goes for ski lessons, buying/drinking wine and even bowling, pool and snooker etc. PM me for further details if you prefer.
Other snowheads, I tried to post this but it got cut by the censor Still not sure why I cannot name the shops or someone might say I am advertizing, funny that when I see so many other people advertizing other stuff on here, even posting links. Oh yeah and I get NOTHING out of this I just arranged it to help out everyone I know that comes to ski in the resort. I am trying to do the same thing in other Les Arc stations. Pm me if you want details so that nobody gets upset this time, politics, yuk I do not want this just to be for SCGB, I hope all snowheads coming out can benefit as we all need to save money right now.

snowcrazy, cheers for the update, sounds like I'll pass on the idea of a cheeky weekend trip from tomorrow which I've spend the last 30 minutes looking at logistics for. Good job too as hire car costs/availability were terrible.
Good luck to all those out there/heading out there and ski safe now...

thefatcontroller, The aim is to get there early evening in time to reward ourselves with a decent meal Last year car decided to play up about an hour before we reach Albertville so spent our meal time sorting out hire car and getting car towed away for repair.

kevinrhead, I reckon 9 hours comfortable to Moutiers. Reckon you will be in Moutiers 5pm French time, nice meal, some vin rouge and empty slopes Saturday to look forward to. Mildly jealous Though in 2 weeks I will be there as well, when all the holiday crowd are leaving we arrive for a nice quiet week. Leave some snow please.

Ok so you heard it here first - apparently there's a branch of Evolution2 opening this season in Peisey-Vallandry. I don't know who's running it but they get good reports in other resorts and it should be open from the weekend - they've taken over the frankly bizarre Paradikitch shop - i.e. on the main road through the resort on the left between the medical centre and the flying handbag station.

bertie bassett, Good, used them a lot in Montchavin and they are great, actually probably expanding into Peisey as Montchavin is struggling as all the English TO's have moved out.

quick update, there has been a reasonable amount of snow here today (probably about 2-4cm), mostly above 1600 to about 2000. it has made the conditions much better and taken the edge of some of the icy patches that were emerging. had a great day as a result

Tell us more - probably to do with the lack of snow right? or just the death trap blue (as I always felt it was due to the ice) back to the resort..

thefatcontroller, thanks for the very detailed review but there is one run that was still on the signs (and is still on some of the old ones now) that has gone. I seem to remember it was only partly pisted at the bottom last season and it was hardly ever open, but it was still there. I think I have now given it away. They have also changed the route of some of the other pistes and now corrected the maps. I like the Natur ride signs myself. The walking route was there last year but was not on the piste map.

In the morning I found snow on the car which was great news. When I got up the pistes had been given a thin coating which made them seem much better but beware of the ice underneath. The conditions kept changing during the day. The morning started very cold. With cloud coming and going. After lunch the snow started to fall below 2000m and above this it was sunny and still very cold. The thin layer made everything look very nice but you had to be very careful of the rocks just underneath off piste. When I spoke to a few people on holiday, they thought the conditions were great for this time of year and were having fun on the higher pistes.
If you can get up above the middle station of the Transarc or from the new Arpette lift which is now running again, the you will have a good time. Just watch out for the odd rock or icy patch.
The head pister says they will try to open one run down to Vallandry soon and Villaroger will open as soon as there is enough snow lower down. The open area above vallandry where the beginners play has good snow cover, they just need to open the Grizzly lift. I hope the snow you are getting in the UK is going to come this way soon.
