Ricklovesthepowder, Dem wus the elusive CHAMOIS, we have a herd feeds on our back field every spring. Beautifull creatures. Gareths way is about the only way to get up and see them as they are very shy creatures. Once the noisy skiers get onto that area they will be off higher, hiding away.

what a great video endlessride, it looks so beautifull with nobody there, how long did than take you to walk up from ardent to the top of mossetts, bout 4 hours??? what were the animals, wild goat or something??? |
Paul has answered the Chamois question. As far as timings are concerned. The Ardent lift is open and so is the Chaux Fleurie. This made access to Mossettes fairly easy. It took us 2.5hrs, but we spent over an hour messing with some problem skins (they feel off 5 times).

endlessride, those photos look great! I'm heading for Portes du Soleil in early Jan myself and can't wait! I'm considerably lazier, and hope that lift in the photo is up and running by the time I arrive! I know this is off topic and I apologise in advance but what camera are you using? I'd like to document the adventures of Avoriaz and beyond! |
Most of the pictures were taken by Sian on a Panasonic TZ6

The quality of the shots is mostly down to her though. She's a semi-pro (people pay for her photos but she doesn't make a living from it).

The video was done on the TZ6 and the sharper stuff was done on a Sony TG3

DaughterOfFrankInston and I ran up to the top of Mossettes from the top of Chaux Fleurie in the summer. It was a stern reminder of how steep it is!

Chuffing cold at the moment, keeping what snow there is in good condition. Local wx forecasts predicting a breakdown in the high pressure on the 22/23 Dec. A period of warmish temps forecast due to the Fohn wind; snowline between 1500m and 2000m. Hopefully this will be followed by a fall in temps again (my prediction, the forecast doesn't go that far ahead). Keeping fingers crossed.

Ricklovesthepowder, Yes the webcam technology/quality has really moved on. I too am also getting a little worried. Snow forecast.com has over 20mm rain forecast at resort level Mon/Tue next week. I'm going out on 27th. No need to worry about 26th Jan....thats a very long way off in weather terms!

My heart just sank when I saw that rain prediction on snow-forecast too.Is it too much to ask for a consistant cold patch with northerly winds!!

Ricklovesthepowder, you only need to worry about whether those of us going shortly are going to leave you any snow . It's going to snow soon. It's going to snow soon. Repeat 100 times.

Ricklovesthepowder, ooh you little worrier! the short term still looks cold with some snow due soon. From about the 22nd the runs are all over the place with the ensemble staying below the zero... don't worry or panic even for those going soon yet! I bet most people wouldn't mind it a bit warmer than the min -25c forecast for the weekend!

Mr snowandtrek, has retired under a very large blanket trying to defrost after taking the guests out this morning. He says 'chuffing cold' is an understatement.
Pleney to open this weekend with limited pistes available - Tourist Office to confirm tomorrow if link with Les Gets also available.

We might even have a sprinkling in our neck of the woods tonight according to local forecast just now. |
Flying out with BA on Sunday, I hope. Skiiing starts Monday , I am sure all will be well, J2ski are claiming more snow coming, so I am not worrying.
The annoying thing is flew out in Jan , whenwe had snow and were delayed for 6 hours because the easy jet crew could not bother turning up for work, so booked BA, for an improved service.
Lucky me.

saw-25, that forecast is for the area and therefore is normally pretty accurate for those averse to cut and paste you can view it here
But I agree certainly in the accurate range it's shaping up quite nicely indeed!

Ricklovesthepowder, I wouldn't worry, conditions aren't bad, it has been snowing all day again, and Cham are forecasting 10-30 cms tomorrow. I'd say this isn't a bad start to the season, not amazing like last year, but not desperate either.

I cannot do any thing about it, so will make the most of what is open and whatever snow there is. These reports change all the time , and worse case senario , I go to the "La Paika" every day and enjoy the food and drink.
At least BA are letting me get there.

I am hoping that Bastardi( accuweather) suddenly see something. But to be honest, I have been watching the reports for a month, and they are not often right. I am not the sort of quality skier that endless ride is so will take what is there. I have been advised that only 4 lifts will be open as it stands, mainly up to the learner area, but Ihave two small children who will still enjoy it.
Worse case , I have to go again!! might go high reort next time.

It's been snowing pretty hard today, on and off. There must have fell at least a couple of inches in Avoriaz village. Visibility at the top of Chaux Fleurie was nil at 3pm, but it was worth going up just to come down on the soft fresh stuff. Doesn't half slow the descent down tho! . Just come back from the pub and the skies are mainly clear, hoping for a little bit more before we head back on Saturday.
Stop bloody worrying - had a great week skiing when, apparently, there isn't enough snow!

lightningdan, high doesn't necessarily help - in early season typically requires more snow to cover rocky terrain rather than alpine meadow (which can be skiable with 20cms), less likely to be snow cannoned (as they're not needed so often) and more prone to high wind/storms/"bad" weather all of which can ruin a ski week just as easily as a lack of snow.
Case in point, 2 years ago the link between Champoluc and Gressoney (somewhere higher than 2,000m) was almost never open all season as although it snowed plenty, it was consistently windy so all the natural snow blew off and they hadn't installed cannons as they'd never needed to before...

under a new name, lightningdan, it also depends where your chosen resort is and where the weather has been coming from. The PDS does better than it should (for its height) when there are weak fronts coming from the North, the precipitation falls on us (the first relief) and sometimes there is none left for Chamonix (it ends up in the "rain" shadow).
AND
It depends on the shape of the relief. This is why Argentiere gets more snow than it should and the Valley de la Manche and Prodains (so did sided "blocked" valleys do well).
If you have the choice - don't go "high" this Christmas, go East, that is where all the snow has been falling.
Anyway, there is way to much negativity about the weather on this forum. IMO it's not about the skiing, it's about the mountains, make the most of what they give you. Don't get fixated on the ski conditions, they'll always be some snow to play in, you just might have to go searching for it.
No skiing in these shots.....
