Snowmonkey, yeah, i noted the 2cm that SA Gets were boasting yesterday. Woop-de-doo. Still, more to come next week by the look of things and anyway, I'm not out until 7th Feb so the snow-gods can hold it till then...

Buddha Bar in Morzine is selling Bud for €2.50 at Happy Hour from 5-7pm

Does anybody know happy hour times for the other Morzine bars, especially the ones likely to show the 6 nations rugby?
Great to see additional snow, there seems to have been a good start, but not much recently.

First day on the snow today and it was really good. Cold, clear and sunny.
Pistes well groomed and not a patch in sight. You'd hardly believe it's been over a fortnight since the last big dump. Here's hoping tomorrow's as good.
Managed to be last on the lift to the top of Mont Chery this afternoon - haven't done that since I was young and foolish and full of enthusiasm. When they turn the lifts off there's something really special about the stillness.

What's the snow like? I'm out there on Thurs? Any forecasts from the locals?

cardweg, my youngest is very proud that we were the very last down on Mont Chery in 2008 It was quite hairy at the top as blizzard with fading light (and my eldest was on fourth day on a board) but once we got through the cloud about third of the way down Chamois we were able to relax a bit and enjoy the deep snow that was falling. You're right, there'a a magical stillness in those conditions......
And of course, we were back up there the next morning for the beginning of 2009.

Blindside, southerly wind this afternoon raised the temp for a while, but a dump forecast for tomorrow up on the hill. also the first couple of days in next week. While the snow level is a bit higher than village level, what's there seems to be holding up well. Here's hoping...

Telemarking in Morzine and Les Gets today. A tale of two halves really.
Early conditions, starting from Nyon, were excellent - nice grippy hardpack and no ice - so excellent for a nervous telemarker like myself.
The coming of "the weather" did somewhat spoil things though as it started blowing a hooooooooolie with very flat light - so it was very hard to work out which way was up at some point.
Fortunately, I'd planned ahead and we holed up in La Paika for another excellent lunch. Coqulet from the BBQ; braised lamb shank finished on the BBQ and moules frites - all excellent (note that this represents the table's consumption, not mine!). A very, very excellent bottle of Cotes du Rhone (Saint Esprit 2007 - highly recommended at 17 euros a bottle) - followed by Black Forest Gateau; an head-turning apple tart with almonds, calvados and meringue and cheesecake. Really, if you only do one thing in Les Gets you really must go there.
geetee, Mrgeetee has already booked for your trip! (If Mrgeetee hasn't fallen over then it must be... )
Conditions after lunch were somewhat tricky on telemarks / red wine. Primarily because the snow below 1200m turned very sticky, resulting in my front ski stopping and the momentum of my back ski taking me over the handlebars.
The return back to Nyon was grim to say the least - although I'm jealous of those skiing tomorrow.
Again, excellent pistes all round. A (very) few patches in (very) high traffic areas, but really superb all around.

FlyingStantoni,
I would wholeheartedly agree with your accurate report. Snow was wet in Les Gets village and very sticky by hometime but hopefully an overnight freeze will sort that out a bit.
I, too, had the coquelet from the BBQ at in La Paika followed by an excellent tarte aux framboises. Our fine tipple was the Bandon Rose. We were maybe even there at the same time. Were you upstairs or down? (Have to say we did visit it on a snowheads recommendation - possibly yours - and it was well worth the visit)
Just curious about your last comment re tomorrow. Have you somewhere in mind that you would head for if you could ski tomorrow?

cardweg, personally, I'd either be on Hautes Fortes or the Fornet bumps if I was around today.
Rose...hadn't thought of that. Excellent idea. We were downstairs - in the left hand corner, if you had your back to the bar. The chocolate brownie had rave reviews from some friends...
zzz, I must admit that I'm glad it was more rain at 4:45 am as our start was early and slidey enough as it was.
garyscott20, half way down the (blue) Vorosses run in Les Gets - just where it crosses the Turche drag lift.

zzz, FlyingStantoni, Yes it was very wet out. Rain at the top of Mont Chery 1st thing - later on it was turning to snow but zzz, I had my big mac on so lovely and dry!!!

Found this on a PDS website that says a lift on the Swiss side is shut. Can anyone there confirm and what impact it has on the circuit I think it got struck by lightening which damaged the cable.
ATTENTION

Télésiège Aiguille des Champeys - fil neige de la Pierre à Corgnieule
(Télésiège Pointe de l'Au/Champoussin FERME)
have found this now....
Following the temporary closure of teh chairlift l'Au-Pointe de l'Au in Champoussin the connexions between Champoussin and Les Crosets have been modified.
Connexion Champoussin - Crosets
> chairlift "l'Aiguille des Champeys"
> blue slope following the signposts direction Crosets
> baby lift (new temporary lift) "Pierre à Cornieule"
Connexion Crosets - Champoussin
> Go down in the direction of "Col des Portes du Soleil" from the top of Mossettes
> blue slope Tovassière just till Morgins
> chairlift the "Foilleuse"
> skilift Bochasses or Sépaya
One to be avoided during the half term

Hello newbie poster here
I am heading out to PDS on 3rd Feb for 4 days. We are based in Saint Jean D'Aulps but plan on skiing most areas while there. Suggestions on a good day worth of ski route starting from any of Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets would be good.
I would like to get miles of skiing in and get right onto the Swiss side.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post (let me know where)
Great to see they are expecting snow in the region all this week, hopefully should be good for my visit then.

garyscott20, it's very near the piste but don't go too fast as it blends in beautifully and hasn't got a big sign so could miss it if not careful
Arms, welcome. If I had 4 days I would do each area separately Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets (incl Mont Chery) and St JdA though you won't get to do anywhere near all of it. Someone who is more familliar with Avoriaz will be along soon I'm sure.

dz4d1v, I was there over the New Year and there is a lift shut at Champoussin. It makes the connection less than perfect as it involves some unpleasant tracks and a small rope tow to complete the circuit. Still doable, although I wouldn't want to take beginners that way, as the path is narrow in places and very up and down. We only did it once and didn't bother again.
We heard from our hotel owner, that the lift is 25 years old and didn't get a safety certificate this year, so had to close. This has all come about because one of the villages on the Swiss side voted against a large amount of money being allocated for lift improvements. The Swiss side lags behing the French resorts in lift investment.

geepee,
Thanks for that. Did some more digging on t'internet and founds lots of articles about the major upgrades on the Swiss side.
http://valdilliez.toutenclic.com/IMG/jpg/24_heures8_mai_b_web.jpg
It looks like Champoussin misses out in the plans so maybe they were anti.
At busy times like half term you do get queues, so they do need an upgrade, but till that happens probably an area to avoid like you say.

cardweg, I found myself having a little moan at the state of the main footpaths in the village over New Year, they were treacherous and particularly in ski boots. Can't expect perfect paths in a ski resort but there were quite a few large patches of hard packed ice on main footpaths which could have been cleared to make it safer, especially as the roads were so busy too. I was itching to get at it with a shovel

We arrive on Sunday, sadly only 4 nights, have been to Avoriaz but not Morzine. What are the options [skiing that is] for scaredy cats if it's absolutely tipping down with snow - are there enough tree-lined pistes or is Lindarets a better option?

Lots of snow in the village this morning. Ardent, Grand Turche and Prodains all had power cuts early on but think they are all running again now. I am in the office watching the flakes fall - forecast is for more light showers on and off and then another dump at the weekend!
