metalhead132, Yes - but they are waiting. Not enough nursery lifts running yesterday, maybe they were caught by surprise at the numbers of british schools here. If only the lift company would talk to the tourist office!

tommy10pages, I get much colder than that. Today I wore: silk long sleeved vest, long sleeved T shirt, long sleeved thermal vest, woolly polo neck, polo necked fleece, nylon wind-proof shirt, another polo necked fleece and then 2 extreme jackets. On the lower half 1 pair of noprene/fleece leggings and 2 pairs of extreme ski trousers. Battery operated boot heaters, 3 pairs on gloves, fleece headband, double fleece hat and double fleece neck/face warmer!! I could hardly move!
today the wind wasn't so bad, but there was a bit more cloud in the sky so it felt colder for a good part of the day. I tried to take a very beautiful picture at about 16.40 of the snow cannon working up on the Cretes, but my camera was too cold and the batteries died as soon as I took it out of my jacket. Really sorry folks. The pic would have been fab! Orange clouds and mountains in the distance and the cannon spouting snow to either side. Oh well. I'll try again tomorrow when it's supposed to be a bit warmer (but not so sunny).

Battery operated boot heaters,
|
how effective are you find them, Charlotte? Are the batteries coping with those temperatures? I remember years ago, skiing with one of the original tape Walkmans, the tempo of the music getting slower and slower, like the 1812 overture. I felt I knew exactly how those Napoleonic troops felt as they started dying of hypothermia on the way into Russia.

I better find some more ski clothes for when I head out to LDA on the 29th then - I usually get too cold when skiing in March!

pam w, Last year and the year before they were fine. This year they're running out earlier in the day. I gues I've recharged them too many times. On the whole I've found them really good - very expensive though!
Frosty the Snowman, No way! I've lost my excess weight and am back to 56 Kilos now, so even with all those clothes on I'm only about the size I was at the end of last season.
KateF, It was warmer (a bit) today although still cold and clear. It's supposed to be getting warmer in the next week or so, but better safe than sorry.
Managed to get a pic today of the dying sun behind the Aiguille de Venosc.

Only three more sleeps until the off. I was all packed and ready, but after reading this, I'm considering whether I should take another rucksack full of layers!!!!

Avago, Don't forget that skiing and teaching are not the same thing. From the point of view of energy expended I might as well stand outside all day, hardly moving. You'll be keeping yourself much warmer. Also local forecast is for warmer temps so you should be OK with normal stuff.

Avago, sorry - missed that bit! Here's a pic looking over to ADH (Pic Blanc) lateish afternoon. I have hardly been off the Cretes all week so it's getting tough to come up with different pix! Planning on going to the glacier tomorrow, so will try a pic or two from there.

Nice and sunny again today (is this getting boring yet?) It was chilly but bearable today, and we went up to the glacier where there was a little breeze, not too many people, and the most wonderful views as ever.
the first photo is looking down onto the dome where it disappears from sight, and the second is the unbelievable view from the top of the Toura looking over towards La Berarde etc. Deffo the best view here, but you have to know it's there, and (advisedly) take off your skis and walk to the edge to see it - most don't!

easiski, I remember why we are coming back now!! The views really are a pleasure. I particularly liked the views from Lauze which if my memory serves me looks down into the dome?! Do you think the Pied Moutet will soon be open?

Avago, I'm sure it will all be open on Sat 22nd when the lift pass price goes up! we've been on cheap time until now.

R32, Thank you, and you two too. If you see this before you leave, they're saying light snow on Sun & Mon, but looking good after that for a while. You should get some good skiing in.
Smokin Joe, thanks
Sorry forgot to take a pic today - full of cold and picked up a last minute lesson for this abo! good weather, not too cold and the snow on the cretes was very good again. I did come down the bottom of the Valentin and found one or two hard patches there. Not ice, but a bit of a shock after all the perfect packed powder higher up! Anyway, I'm only mentioning it because it wasn't perfect This afternoon they started running all the lifts they hadn't run so far this season - voute, Combe de Thuit, Vallee Blanche etc (and the link one from the Jandri side to the Pied Moutet side.) Clearly testing them out on this week's peeps before the huge surge tomorrow.

I'd just like to echo what others have said about the excellence of easiski's, instruction which I think has made a big diference to my skiing and that of my wife. Once things have calmed down a bit I shall post a brief report in resorts.
easiski, hope you continue to have great conditions and I'll hopefully be back for more at some point

easiski, working on tactics is a full time occupation of mine, but they are spread thin with wanting ski time and bike time and parts. No one ever told me about how hard the bargaining process would become once i was married. Lesson to learn here is- always lay down plans for hobbies before the big day
just like to add, i hope you and all the other snowheads have a wonderful Christmas x

Lesson to learn here is- always lay down plans for hobbies before the big day
good point. my son is working on a strategy which involves "you get to choose the paint colours for the kitchen, and the curtain fabric for the sitting room, and I get to decide on a holiday. Or, if you prefer, I decide the paint colours and you decide on the holiday. I'm happy either way". It's success is still in the balance but my daughter in law is unlikely to call his bluff because he liked bold colours and she wants it all basically near white!

|
|
|
|

pam w, your son is still at the learning stage, my wife would choose the holiday let me choose the paint colour then get me to change it when we got back off holiday. very harsh i really have to negotiate really well.

fragy, We'll just have to get her right into the whole skiing thing - that's what's needed - for her to be as keen as you are. Summer is the ticket I reckon - warm, sunny, views, swimming pool (you could dive off your balcony couldn't you?) ......
I had my first beginners of the season today, and here's a pic looking across the Petit Viking nursery slope with the face sort of in the background. sorry it's a bit blurry, but I was going up the lift at the time!
The day actually worked out better than advertised and was quite warm and also sunny in the afternoon! It was supposed to be cloudy all day. tiny dusting of fresh but not more than that, and it doesn't look as though we're going to get any more for a few days - still pleasant weather at Christmas is a bonus, and the snow's still good.
ianmacd Nice to meet you and well done to both of you - huge strides I think!

Noggy junior and I just back from a week in LDA with great ski conditions. About 1cm of snow at resort level overnight I reckon, which will spruce things up just a bit - not that they really needed it, although I thought Pied Montet wasn't great when it opened on Saturday. Had some really useful lessons from easiski - and noggy junior (16) who doesn't normally 'do' or 'need' lessons echoed many of the sentiments above. Thank you very much, Charlotte. I didn't rate my accomodation very highly, but the resort was certainly much nicer than some reviews indicate, and overall a really great week. Had a few beers in a very charming pub with some snowheads too, which was very convivial. Roll on 4 weeks until Chamonix!
