@Klamm Franzer, excellent, didn't realise that. Yes numbered hairpins on a bike a fate worse than the bus for sure. Not sure how scenic it was - I like a climb if it has views -unless the road in summer goes over where the slow chairlift brings you to cinque torre? That would be amazing. Gotta get back in summer for cycling, hiking and wellness.

@Owls101, and anyone else heading out this weekend
Forecast all good with perhaps a bit fresh snow mid week.
Not warn but not baltic cold and light winds.
Barring disasters should be a ok trip out. (last year someone run into the back of our car on the way to the airport)

Conditions in Madonna area fantastic all day today, even late on pistes much better than late yesterday.
We popped over to Pinzolo late pm. It was very busy. There is a new gondola to replace the old chairlift up from Pra rodont to Dose del sabion which looks good, most of the building at the top of Doss Del Sabion has been updated and it looks great. We normally stop for a drink there and have lunched as the views are amazing but unfortunately there were way too many people and massive queues so we moved on. Both blacks to Pinzolo were closed and so was the Tulot gondola so maybe that concentrated people. We normally stay for half a day but basically just headed back with one drink stop. We witnessed several serious wipeouts, saw a couple of emergency skidoos and someone close to me described the pistes there as “full of nutters”!
Oh, the Groste snow park was part open today. They seem to have extended it and are still making snow, there are a couple of part built jumps which tbh look scarily massive.
Back in Madonna we had a great afternoon but still saw a few people being taken down the mountain by sled. Maybe by Thursday people have become over confident?
Not snow stuff
Hot chocolate at the Patacoss Rifiguo 9/10, tasty and bonus half point for the size.
At Malga Cioca, Pinzolo, 7/10, nice enough and still better than almost anything in the UK.
@luigi, My hot chocolate expertise is like my skiing, enthusiastic amateur with no expertise.
Personally - had a good lesson this morning, this combined with the great conditions resulted in me really felling like today I skied the best I ever have, this if course is all relative but seriously the difference that a couple of private lessons have made is amazing, reminded me what I’d forgotten in 2 yrs and then added improvements. I’ll probably have forgotten it all by tomorrow
Last day in Madonna tomorrow then over to Alta Badia, last time we were there I broke my wrist so fingers crossed all goes well this time… |
thanks for the updates, we are off to Madonna on the 20th - by interest who did you book your lesson with?

@Hurtle, would be interested in your thought, we’re thinking of going but I don’t know if I can be bothered driving 1hr 20 each way |
Mmm...a full day of lovely, varied skiing is possible, but preferably on a sunny day - it's horribly bleak when the weather is bad, as a good deal of the skiing is above the tree line. However, the drive for us was only 40 minutes, I'm not sure If I'd want to travel much further for a day trip.

@roguemazza, between us we’ve been 6 times and always used these guys
https://www.scuolascicampiglio.com/en/
I do private lessons and at my request they get me the same instructor every year. Giorgio is very patient and tells me how I used to ski 7 years ago, so some memory.
We’ve done a couple of small group trips with friends, some folks did group lessons and they were all happy. The beginners area is out of town so they run a minibus which does hotel pickups.
Where are you staying?

So last report from Madonna di Campiglio, fantastic day, blue skies and conditions on piste good right to the last lift. In fact they were probably too good for my bumps lesson, could have done with some larger ones. Had a couple of queues for a few minutes at the start of the day but nothing after that. There is still plenty of snow around off piste so everywhere looks great.
Hot chocolate rating for the day
Boch rifugio next to Groste intermediate station 9/10
Rifugio Pradalago also 9/10, with also honourable mention that the toilets don’t involve any stairs!
Speaking of which, my wife found some secret public toilets which were immaculate, well maybe not secret but not signed…. Below the Groste intermediate station, just go down the stairs between the platforms. So after 6 visits there is still something new
We ate at cantina suisse last night and it was good, nice atmosphere, quite meaty with limited gluten free options so tonight we plan to return to Le Volte where we had a great meal the other evening.

@stevew, Stayed there once -- it is on the main road, with a nearby bus stop, but I did walk a couple of times.
Food was a bit 'hit and miss' and the rooms ( with Crystal) where in an Annex
Was several years ago -- check trip advisor for more update info ?

Hello, I am going to be arriving in Selva on Thursday lunchtime, for the weekend. Keen to get up the mountain and put in a few runs (although my weather guru says it might not be great). Any suggestion for a newbie to the area on where to head? We are all intermediate skiers or better.
Also, any suggestions on where to go for an apres drink? Are there any good spots on the mountain that I should know about?
Thank you

We usually go to the Arlberg from Innsbruck have have used Herwig at office@compass-tours.at for a number of years. They are taking us to Selva this week though. Always been reliable although I am not the one in my group that organises the transfer.

Probably Dantercepies area : couple of short intermediate slopes to get warmed up on before you head to the top (Costabella chair from centre of village to access the slopes)

Probably best heading for the nearest lift, no point schlepping across town just because some one on here said this is the best place to go.
Where are you staying or picking up skis from? ie. from where will you be walking in ski boots and carrying skis?
Thursday gets a bit busy mid afternoon on mountain at Piz Seteur with Europop and dancing and La Stua is usually the liveliest spot in the village at close of play.

Blue skies and good pistes in Alta Badia today, coldest day so far though, a chilly wind on some of the chairlifts especially around Pralongia. We had to make an unscheduled stop to warm up.
Snow conditions generally good, better lower down later in the day. The run down from Santa Croce at 4pm was deserted and lovely, very grippy as it gets the sun in the afternoon.
Quite busy with queues this morning. We made the mistake of dropping down to San Cassiano and the queue for Pix sorega gondola was over the bridge, took us about 15 mins, this was at 11:30. Car parks were full but hopefully day trippers, it is Sunday after all. Fingers crossed it will be quieter tomorrow.
Some snowmaking taking place on Pralongia, looks like they’re creating large piles to spread this evening.
Hot chocolates
Saraghes ? On pista 9a with the wooden elephant/mammoth outside - recommended on SH, didn’t disappoint 9/10 - saved some for my wife which solidified within about 2mins, the sign of a proper hot chocolate Shame you have to use Piz Sorega to get back up top
La Baita, on piste 8 towards Corvara - 7/10 (probably same amount of chocolate as above in twice the volume of milk)

Aha, so now it depends on which end of La Selva!!
If you're at the bottom end near the hotel Oswald, you can walk across the main road and up through to the Nives drag at the bottom of the nursery slopes where you can work your way up the nursery slopes, cross the road to the Risaccia drags (blue) and the Dantercepies gondola (red). Or you could catch a skibus up the main road to the main Ciampinoi lift. Pretty steep red and black drop-offs from there though, unless you hook right around the back of the top station.
If you're at the cluster of hotels at the top end around the Granvara, you can walk through to the Saslong Variant red and drop down to Sta Cristina base. From there you can either go up the Saslong gondola to Ciampinoi or catch the funicular across the valley to the Col Raiser gondola where there are some nice blues.
