@Scooter in Seattle, as things stand you'll be fine it currently says open but you need snowchains. Looking at the webcam I think that's just precautionary. If there's a massive snowstorm it wouldn't be such a great route.

We had to drive to Kals am Großglockner on 23rd December in the middle of a snowstorm. We chose to go via the Inntal Autobahn, across to Kitzbühel and down over Pass Thurn and up and through the Felbertauerntunnel. The same route you will have taken from Kitzbühel. It was slow going, but we got there fine. In the middle of March i'm sure you'll likely be fine. |
Good to know thanks. Hoping for bare and dry roads so we can go that way.

Skied some runs up in the Penken area that I haven't done so far this season:
Black 12 under the Schneekar. Nice run and not too steep for the majority of the run, made a nice change from our usual route down red 10/ blue 11.
We also lapped the Katzenmoos chair over in Finkenberg a couple of times taking red 47 and blue 50. Nice runs and really quiet over there.
Warm and slushy out there, especially as it was gone 1 by the time we went up, but, snow coverage is still good all things considered. Windy today, and the odd flurry of snow, fingers crossed for a decent amount tomorrow!

Keep us up to date please @swskier. Seems like another warm end to the week next week but m hopefully Sunday brings snow.
Any tips on good family food at resort? We went to Edelweiss years and years ago and enjoyed it but was a long time ago...

@Ekposh, Edelweiss is nice, we've been a couple of times with visiting friends. Apparently the food in Christlwirt in Hippach is meant to be very good. We're going to go with my parents next week when they visit. Of course I have to shout out the Unterbergalm Hütte on the ski area (but remember it's cash only). Mo's in Mayrhofen is fairly decent, but nothing fancy, always seems busy and popular though, so perhaps worth booking a table, likewise Edelweiss.
Beyond that, we haven't eaten out in too many places, particularly in Mayrhofen.
Edit
Also, Mrs Swskier worked for 1 month during interseason at the Schrofenblick in Burgstall and said the food there was lovely. It's around a 20 minute walk from Mayrhofen if you fancied an evening stroll one night, alongside the river.

I'd say snowfall was at least as forecast, probably more.
Freezing level was around 1600m, when I got up there around 2 the Schneekar lift was saying zero degrees at the bottom, which is just basically 1600m.
Up behind our house as we came home, the cloud cleared a bit and it looked to me like the snow line was sitting a bit lower more like 1200m on the trees.
I went up to eat a late lunch at the Unterbergalm, only skied today as that's the only way to get to the restaurant! Conditions weren't worth bothering to ski much, that said, if I was on my 1 weeks holiday, i'd have been out there skiing all day!

Report from Mrs Swskier is that there was a good 3 or 4 inches of snow last night after they'd pisted and that it was an amazing ski to work this morning.
Some temperature stats for you from the last few days.
Friday 9th Feb - picked up Mrs Swskier from the Horbergbhan at 4.30 after work, van temperature dial was saying 15 degrees in the valley.
Saturday 10th Feb - drove to Kaltenbach at 7am, van was saying 9 degrees.
Sunday 11th Feb - went out skiing around 2, van was saying 6 degrees in the valley
Monday 12th Feb - dropped Mrs Swskier at the Horbergbahn at 8am van was saying 3 degrees. Picked her up at 4.30 van was saying 6 degrees.
Tuesday 13th Feb - dropped Mrs Swskier at the Horbergbahn at 8am van was saying 3 degrees.
So there's a noticeable drop in temperature from last week.
Here's a picture in Laimach of the hill behind our house.
Snowline there is probably somewhere between 1000-1100m i'd say. Bearing in mind most/all of the skiing around the valley starts at over 1000m it's not too bad.
Hoping to nip out on my lunch break today, so will report back.

@Dubmuffin, We’re staying in Finkenberg and skied most of the connected Mayrhofen area. Conditions are good and don’t seem to be deteriorating, exception being the bottom of blue 77 before the Rastkogelbahn gondola - soft brown snow in places.
We’ve previously been at Christmas, a half term, first half of March and first week of April, and it’s definitely much less soft in the afternoon than when we’ve seen later in the year.
Today we’ve been on the Ahorn so we could all stay together. The main blue at the top was in perfect shape for those gaining confidence and the valley run was a lot of fun.
Also, generally less busy than I was expecting!

Looking for some Zillertal advice - Despite visiting before we’ve never got around to visiting other areas and would be good to do so this time. Are there other places similar to the Ahorn in Zillertal where the less confident skiers can stay around some nice shortish blues while others explore reds and blacks near by?

@simonbaddeley, Hochfügen would work but it's a bit of a trek to get there from Finkenberg.
Theoretically, Hochzillertal would also be good. The blue piste below Kristallhütte was excellent yesterday however, skiing back from there to the main gondola station might be a bit terrifying for your less confident skiers.
I was there with a sitski yesterday - the Z was
(The Z being the piste that everyone needs to use to get back to the gondola station)

@simonbaddeley, Thanks for the update. It'll be my first time in Mayrhofen so a big learning curve in terms of resort layout and finding favourite runs that are not too terrifying as @SaraJ, puts it!

@simonbaddeley, Gerlosstein while tiny might be nice for a day if you're happy repeating the same runs, it's also super quiet up there. When I went up on Tuesday it was the busiest i've ever seen, sometimes there was 4 or 5 people in front of me while waiting for the lift!

Anyone knows why all the skiroutes in Hintertux are marked as closed? Crevasses, ice or too much rocks visible?
My finger is on the Buy-button for 29th of february but have to stay cool and wait couple of days whether Big dump will appear.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Thumb, unlikely to be anything to do with Crevasses as 1a, 2, 13 and 13a are all below the level of the glacier, so i'd guess it's more due to snow conditions, but i've not been up there now for 1.5 weeks so can't confirm that.

Anyone got an idea of what the run into town from the Ahorn is like? Surely closed is it?

@Ekposh, It's open, but it'll be man made snow. It's on a north facing slope so it gets zero sun on it.

That's a lovely view you have. Can just see the run there. Looks OK.
Considering the temps and lack of snow the general feeling I'm getting is pistes are holding up well on the whole.
Will be better than working in the office, that's for sure.
