Vous etes tres pessimiste, monsieur Pasigal!
ARPAV are all-in on tomorrow night's snow...over the course of Friday & Saturday 80-100cm average coverage of light dry snow above 1800-2000m in the Venetian Dolomites, up to 120-140cm locally, but less lower down as the snow will be denser. Snow line is in the valley bottoms in the Dolomites, but rises to 1100-1300m in valleys open to the South.

Heavy cloud cover in Alleghe. Almost down to town level. Light snow coming down steadily, about 5-7cm overnight. Winter is here

I wonder if anybody can help with this.
I am flying into Innsbruck early on Sunday morning, hiring a car and driving to Canazei. My preferred rout is via Selva and across the Passo Sella between Plan De Gralba and Canazei. However, I know this road is not always open if there is fresh snow. Does anybody have any advice as to how I can check if it is open before starting out form Innsbruck?
Many thanks.

this page gives traffic reports for the area
https://traffico.provincia.bz.it/default.asp
click on 'traffic e viabilita' and turn on the 'passi e strade' button (this will show mountain passes)
You might more replies if you post your question in the 'Piste' section of the forum.... (ive never driven from Innsbruck, but I'm sure others have)

There are multiple ways from Innsbruck to Canazei.
Safest (or back-up plan) is probably Brenner Autobahn, and stay on until Ora/Auer, then drive in via Predazzo and Moena. It's longer, but it's pretty much all main road from what I remember. And no high mountain pass to get across when it's dumping. I've never taken the Karerpass, so can't comment on that.
https://www.adac.de/reise_freizeit/verkehr/alpenstrassen/default.aspx also shows open/closed passes. Several passes in the Sella Ronda area are or will be closed from later today.
My plan is to do Innsbruck-Arabba via Corvara/Campolongo tomorrow. Could be interesting.
PS don't forget the extra €10 for the tollbooth on Austrian side, and a few € for the Italian Autostrada.

Good luck!!
The Campolongo is the lowest and most sheltered of the 4 passes around the Sella.

Snowed all day here in Selva/ Wolkenstein. Maybe 15-20cm, on Sellajoch side, a bit less around Secceda. Much more due overnight. Needless to say anyone coming out here soon will have a great time! Snow was pretty good quality too, and not of the setting cement type. Slopes very quiet.

Might be useful to anyone heading out there atm, I sent a thank you email to the wonderful, fantastic Garni Bondi directly on the Nives nursery slope and was told travel from Grödnertal to Brenner (road and rail) is closed, not sure about the other direction...

Horrendous!! At least we managed to book ahead and get a hotel in innsbruck. Lots of people on the train in the same boat. People walking into our hotel off the street trying to get a room with no luck!! Tomorrow is going to be fun at the airport
Good luck tomorrow, hope you get through!!

Made it back ok from Innsbruck but two earlier flights today to U.K. cancelled and one diverted to Munich. Brenner was like a lorry park, with hundreds parked up on the hard shoulder/ inside lane. Still, at least it’s passable. Lots of stories re taxis from INN to Gröden/ Gardena yesterday having to divert via Salzburg at a fare of €800 rather than the usual €210.
Some of my group now insisting we only fly via Italy when we come out to the South Tirol next!!
15cm or so of fresh snow overnight in St Ulrich. Will be fantastic this week!

I can recommend flying to Venice. Lovely quiet airport in winter, very few skiers and no problems with snow. The transfer is about 3.5hrs to Corvara with a stop but very pretty and only twisty the last hour or so.

Is that from Venice Marco polo? We arrive 16th February and driving to Pozza so was hoping to take the most direct route over the San Pelligrino pass but am slightly worried with regards to what it will be like with fresh snowfall. We are hiring a car with snow tyres so assume we should be ok?

@wishfulthinker, check the travel situation in advance. some passes in italy shut saturday (fadaia?), our transfer from venice was 4.5 hours v. expected 3hrs.
.however, oodles of snow. pistes in canazei hsd 30-50cm of powder, and the offpiste at the sides was thigh deep at times. Avvie risk is 4, and big avvie on saturday buried a local kid, dug out ok. vis was poor, but little wind. Monday looking awesome!

We managed to get back from innsbruck today with BA to Gatwick. Earlier inbound flights from heathrow and luton delayed or diverted last i looked on the arrivals board. Didn't realise the delayed ones were cancelled. BA flight back to heathrow required passengers to be bussed to munich to get their flight. What on earth was the problem?? Our inbound flight from Gatwick arrived 20 minutes early. Also reconsidering whether to even go back to the dolomites after the brenner pass closure issues. Our friends who came with us certainly wont be going back. Their previous 2 trips were super straight forward from salzburg to saalbach and much much quicker. Very hard to persuade them otherwise now.

@jimmybog, You experienced a very rare event - in 15 trips to the dolomites I've never been delayed. Perhaps consider flights to an Italian airport? ; transfer would be a little bit longer tho'
Remember - a couple of weeks ago flights to some Austrian airports were being diverted to Munich !!

Glad you had some good snow !!!

@jimmybog,
Be a shame not to go back to the Dolomites because one year the Brenner pass was closed when you wanted to use it. Of course if you come from the Italian airports in the South you don't have that issue. Perhaps that's one of the reasons the TO's come that way.

@wishfulthinker,
I would recommend the short route over SP pass unless snowmageddon is occurring.
I make the drive from Treviso airport up to Moena (10 mins from Pozza) every fortnight - 5 times so far this season. It normally takes less than 2.5 hours. When the roads are a bit snowy winter tyres are fine. This weekend was the first time I've encountered serious snow so friday evenings drive took 3 hours including chaining up at Falcade to go up to SP. Removed chains before we arrived in Moena.
This was my first real "chaining" experience and fitting the chains and driving in those conditions was far less daunting than I expected.
Between Falcade and Moena they did a tremendous job this weekend keeping the road clear. Descended from SP yesterday evening without the need for chains. Local Police, regional Police, Carabinieri all in evidence to keep the pass managed and moving. I was very impressed.

@jimmybog, according to our taxi driver, BA and to some extent EasyJet don’t land at INN in poor conditions when other airlines can and do. He didn’t know why - maybe the others have specialist equipment? I’ve been diverted twice on the way to INN, both BA. Not had a problem with the Italian airports.

As we had friends come with us, they wanted as short a transfer as possible, hence innsbruck was the choice. On previous trips we have returned via venice and verona to avoid potential weather delays at innsbruck. Problem is on saturday just gone, we would have had issues getting to venice as falzarego pass was supposedly shut. If we'd have tried to return via verona we wouldn't have been able to go over gardena pass to catch the train at ponte gardena as the pass was again supposedly shut. The other option of train from brixen southbound would also given us the same issues as it took us 3 hours in a taxi to get to brixen from corvara due to the backlog in the pusteral valley of people trying to join the motorway to brenner. Either way i dont think an Italian airport would have helped us on this occasion. For future trips i will likely stay nearer the motorway in the gardena valley or seis, kastelruth etc. Id be pretty confident then of reaching the station at pinte gardena to head south to verona. And no this will not put me off the dolomites. I don't think anything will. One bad return journey out of 4 is ok with me. Definitely will not be able to convince my friends though. Just need bolzano airport to reopen and it will make travelling much easier

We flew from Bristol yesterday and instead of landing in INN (plane almost touched down then took off again ) we landed in Salzburg. We took a taxi as the buses were reported to be running late and slow. I am going to look at flying into Venice in future. Anyway the pistes here are in fantastic condition and it is cold and brilliantly sunny.
