The Ski Podcast Episode 178: ……..mountain biking in the Alps
Huh? |
All things alpine across all seasons
As we discussed during the episode, low lying resorts can offer multi-sport winter holidays if the snow isn't playing ball |
If so then the podcast title of “The Ski Podcast “ is a mis-nomer.

You could always actually listen to it and decide for yourself I suppose.
I really enjoyed #178 - I'd never thought of Bosnia as a winter destination before but it sounds rather interesting, and the biking bit was good - I've not done any for years and made me think about having another go with the kids sometime again soon.

@Richard_Sideways, listen to decide if The Ski Podcast is misnamed if it had MTBing in it? I don’t think I need to listen to it to work out that it is misnamed. Its not ssmkiing, its not on snow, just happens to use same location and infrastructure.

Many skiers are Mtn biking in June. And you can even do it on snow at the moment as there’s so much of the stuff they still haven’t cleared the north facing slopes of the bike park!

It also talks a lot about music & bands. Shall we be pedantic about that as well?

There's an age old saying for alpine living
'Come for the Winter, stay for the Summer'
With most UK holiday skiers having to book 6-12 months in advance for their annual winter fix, combined with Mother Nature not always playing ball I think it's great that Iain is highlighting alpine areas which offer multi-sport and cultural opportunities in case the skiing is poor / unavailable
Also many seasons passes cover the Summer months as well, so knowing which resorts offer alternatives to skiing using the existing infrastructure during the non-Winter months allows the listener to make a more informed choice on destination and lift pass purchase
As my recent trips to Italy, Scotland, Turkey, Japan & Bosnia show there are plenty of destinations which offer great skiing and a city break / cultural break
If your ideal ski trip is ski, eat, sleep, repeat then fantastic
But there are many like me who want to combine a number of elements on their Winter holiday

Yes, but the pitches tend to swing a bit, and marmots keep nicking the match ball.

Nice one highlighting the Aosta valley. Courmayeur is a gem when those Southern fronts come in and the snow stops at the Mont Blanc ridge. There used to be a bus from Cham train station included on the lift pass dropping you in Courmayeur / skyway Monte Bianco (and back late in the day). Alternatively you can ski back to Cham via the Vallee Noir. Off piste lovers dream! Seems there’s also some fab mtn biking around Aosta in the Summer. We’re hoping to go with these guys in August https://www.aostavalleyfreeride.com/

That was a great interview!!! Super interesting guy, unvelievable skier, and you did a really nice job getting him to tell his story.
This skis seem to be decent but hardly revolutionary from the reviews I’ve read. Would like to try them though!

Bode's got a crowdfunder out for his company.
Warning the financials look like a total skip fire. They sold $2.8m in skis last year at a gross margin around 50% but spunked $3.9m largely on paying themselves and another $2m+ on marketing. Bode's clearly not wanting to put his hand in his pocket any more so there is a BS story about democratization of skiing so suckers can be induced to "invest"* in the hope that their stake might turn into shares at some point.
*Clue it almost certainly won't, the business is on month to month cashflow financing through Shopify which can't be effective for a business with the ambitions of scale that it has.
Filing makes interesting reading if you want to lift the skirt on the reality of Bode's great new ski company. https://republic.com/peak-ski look at the Form C.

@Dave of the Marmottes, alas that doesn’t look very promising! With only $50k left in the bank and losing $6m last year I guess their days are numbered unless they find some deep pockets soon. As a long time Faction (very small) investor I would not recommend anyone to invest in a ski company, however good the products or people!

Indeed. If you think about what they have in terms of asset, it's hard to differentiate from the field... and if burning at that rate deserves considerable explanation beyond "ethos". They have a few hundred grand pledged at an average of $2,000 a head though. Does that American SAFE thing come with tax breaks? I'll stick with VUSA, but I'm trying to understand why people who dont' know the guy would fund something losing that much money...
