Any idea what pistes they plan to open on Friday? Bit surprised by how much snow there seemed to be looking at the webcams, there were folk (presumably piste patrol) skiing down the Galzig piste.

Looking a bit warm on the GFS charts , hopefully snow higher up! Not sure if there is "plenty" on the GFS charts, all can change and usually does!

The weather conditions will remain mild until next midweek, the snow line will rarely sink below 2000m.

Although it indeed is looking quite good for Christmas, coming week really looks like a lot of warm water up to 2000 m...

@Markymark29, GFS is what many of the forecasts actually use for the underlying data, this is the current one, note the temp graph is going up and too high for snow!
The graph that is displayed shows precipitation and the 850mb temperature forecast including the current GFS forecast runs (each run is the same forecast but with tweaked input data) and an average of all those runs. The average historical data (from 1971-2000) is shown by the red line, the current forecast by the green line, and the average of the last dozen runs by the grey line. The thick blue line is the current forecast, but run on older 'lower resolution' software. Each other line is the same forecast with the tweaked data.
850mb roughly corresponds to an altitude between 1400-1600m for the alps most of the time.
When all the different forecasts are in close alignment you can infer that there is some certainty in the GFS forecast data, but if the lines are all over the place it is difficult to say with any confidence what the weather will do.

@munich_irish, look at that freezing level graph on wepowder, that is going to be crucial as to snow or rain! I suspect they both use GFS but are on different timings behind when GFS releases their data!

@kitenski, forecasting the precise level above which snow will fall and below which will be rain is well nigh impossible too many random factors. It is always an educated guess. All we can really say is it is likely to be wet (of some sort) in St Anton early next week. The sort of days best spent near a warm fire rather than on the mountain.

@stanton, I have mixed views on these things, I like both the quiet of a remote alm and skiing down a piste to the Mooserwirt. Assuming this is the final decision (I have my doubts given the current politics in Austria) then this means the end of Kappl as a ski resort (I doubt anyone in St Anton cares very much). In some ways no big deal, some already well off land owners and hoteliers are the ones with most to loose. On the other side it probably means the long term viability of the smaller ski resorts must be called into question, they have less political clout but perhaps they are more environmentally friendly than behemoths such as Ischgl, Kitzbühel and the Arlberg?

Can anyone confirm to me which direction this link would go? Would it be from the top of RENDL and away to the other side to Kappl?
Does Kappl have much areas to ski?
