A bit of sleet this afternoon, and some thawing of the snow at 1800m. But the temperature has dropped a couple of degrees since it got dark, and now we're back to snow (and wind).

Rouelles was at its magnificent best in fresh snow this morning, headed home after lunch to give the quads a chance for the rest of the week 😃☃😃
I just hope they can open up in time for a good ski tomorrow
Back at base in Peisey village I cleared half a metre of snow off the car which we parked on Sunday 9pm

7 January 2016. More powder and fresh tracks again today, but with a nasty twist in the afternoon!
Started the day with a fun ski off the ridge behind the Arpette. Fresh soft deep powder most of the way down, but a little tricky in places.
Due to the poor weather all the higher lifts and connections were closed at the start of the day so we had a quick blast across the meadows above Arc 1800 in varied light with snow falling before heading towards the forests of Vallandry.
In the open spaces off the top of the Derby chair the light was quite flat, but once in the forests the vis was better and the snow was still great. On the second lap still making fresh tracks a little fall meant a big hunt for a ski which was finally found. Never good to loose a ski on a powder day!
Over to the Peisey side and into the forest, but the snow quality was not as good or deep so after a short ski in the trees and down the black piste on this side we headed back to the Derby chair.
One more ride up the chair and a great run down in more fresh powder through the trees. Wanted to do it again, but by the time we got back to the chair it had closed as the winds were getting stronger.
Change of plan and a run down through the trees and a few jumps until we reached the piste into Vallandry.
The weather was getting worse so time for lunch.
Now for the nasty twist. After a great morning in fresh powder with more snow falling all around us, we looked out the window to see HEAVY RAIN!! YUK!!
What to do! We had another drink and finally dressed and headed back towards Arc 1800. By now all the higher lifts had closed including the Carreley and the rain was still falling at the top of the Vagere chair.
Time to head for home! Although the weather was not great today, the vis was poor most of the day and snow was falling and then turning to rain. We still had a great time. The pistes in the morning were excellent right across Les Arcs, but by the afternoon the warm temps had made them very wet and sticky in places.
Tomorrow is forecast to be raining all day. If true then it will be time for a rest day. I will post an update tomorrow. I hope it get's cold again quickly before all the good snow goes off!
Photos from today are posted in the January 2016 Album on the Les Arcs Winter page. Take a look at how great the tree skiing was! Enjoy!

Hi all,
Flying out to Les Arcs tomorrow staying at 1950, very excited! It seems however that my prayers to the snow and colder weather gods have meant that Sunday onwards is looking very very cold and it doesn't seem to stop snowing (http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Les-Arcs/6day/mid).
I know forecasts can change, but if the forecast stays as it is what are the chances of being able to get out snowboarding in this kind of weather?! I've only been there when it's not been snowing before.
Also if the lifts start closing does anyone have recommendations of which runs are accessible from Les Arcs 1950 that we can then easily get back from too?
Thanks in advance!

Forecast is perfect dont' stress, perfect boarding weather, looks like fresh everywhere. Getting back to 1950 is easy so long as the high lifts are open and even if they are not then there will be plenty to play with in the bowl. Lifts being open are dependent on the weather/safety/risk so who knows.
We are out in 2000 next week and looking forward to leaving our skis in the apartment and boarding all week.

Weather at 1800m a bit like yesterday afternoon: veering between snow and sometimes sleet, with temperature currently 1 degree, and coming down moderately heavy, so presumably a fair amount of new, heavy, snow being added to the higher slopes.
Lots of blasting going on, and none of the higher lifts are open at the moment.
@andyhawkes, it's rare for all lifts to be closed because of too much snow, but more common, as today, for the lifts to the top of the Arc 2000 bowl and the ridges between Villager, Arc 2000 and Arc 1800 to be delayed opening or even closed all day if the avalanche risk is very high. Best to check online or at one of the indicator boards to see what lifts/pistes are open, as this changes throughout the day.

8 January 2016. Wet, windy and poor vis..
The higher lifts were slow at opening again today and some closed early. Yesterday it was raining to the top of the vagere chair by late afternoon although the morning was excellent. Today the freezing level was at around 2000m for some of the time and it was very wet all day! Not a very good day on the hill!
It was best for those brave enough to go out in the trees and staying in more sheltered areas. The forecast is similar for tomorrow so I do not expect many of the higher lifts will be open if the avalanche risk stays at level 4 and the wind remains strong and vis is poor.
But with bad weather brings snow and the forecast for the coming week is for lower temps and more snow so it should get better again very quickly.
For all those driving out this weekend, they are recommending using chains up to resort stations from the valley, but right now although slippy the roads are mostly ok. Take care driving tomorrow when it is more busy on the roads, I have seen a few cars sliding in the slush!
Anyone coming out this week get in touch if you fancy meeting up for a drink or maybe some riding.
No photos today. The two new live feed links are now working on the Les Arcs web page. They are worth a look., More to follow tomorrow.

andyhawkes, do not worry to much about not being able to ride. There is always something open even if the higher lifts are closed. Now that Villaroger is open you also have the forest areas over that side so no need to use the bus round to Arc 1600/1800 side. If you fancy meeting up send me a PM.

Waiting for the cold and snow to return!
Yesterday was a bit grim, getting warmer as the day went on, changing from wet snow to sleet to rain at resort level. Didn't bother skiing as I hate being out in the rain unless I really have to. I don't think the weather will have done much damage to the pistes lower down, and higher up it fell as snow (about 15cm added to snow depth at 2300m).
It's currently raining lightly at 1800m, and 3 degrees. Forecast is for it to start to get colder this afternoon, and then at least a few days of very cold and potentially very snowy weather. Lots of blasting going on, with the avy risk at 4 above 2200m and 3 below that. When the weather improves it should be excellent, but probably another day for me to catch up with chores and paperwork.

@boredsurfin, It is always a lottery high up, especially in a tiny hire car out of Geneva. Jan last year we had heavy snow from 1400m and a very nervous drive up late with no cars or ploughs around.mrsfatcontroller was paler than the snow by the time we arrived.

It's now snowing quite hard at 1800m, as forecast. Temperature around 1 degree. Might head out this afternoon for an hour or so.
Just driven up from Bourg, roads perfectly clear as far as the main part of Arc 1800. The last half mile up to our apartment has a bit of slush on it, but as as it's a quiet bit of road it doesn't get cleared by the passing of traffic. I'd guess you'd be OK up to 2000 if you have winter tyres.

@thefatcontroller, As of 16:00 cars and buses were chaining up from just below the entrance to 1950. A couple of mini-busses were stuck with no traction. Hope it doesn't get any worse

It's recently stopped snowing and the cloud has cleared from the valley, allowing a view down to Bourg St Maurice. Despite the rain of the last couple of days there's still snow on the valley floor.

Just a little Canon thing, travel zoom I think is the category. It's a Canon SX240. Slips in to a pocket very easily, and old enough for me to not worry about using it in wet snow.

Nice photos @rob@rar,
With another wet, rainy day up the mountain in store today, after I looked out the window this morning I thought, OK, time for a day off.
Those I spoke with that did go up confirmed that it was raining at the top of the Transarc gondola at one point and the higher lifts did not open.
They also said it cleared up a little this afternoon, but was still very wet. Even thought about going up, but then I heard it was sleet up top so did a few jobs instead. Looking at Robs photos, pleased I stayed home. You do look very wet!
Tonight it is getting colder again and was snowing down to below 1600m. Nothing right now in the valley and roads still clear, but that can change quickly. Hopefully the last rainfall will help improve the snow stability and with more snow coming during the next 24 hrs, tomorrow should be another powder day, although we might be in the trees again.
For those coming out the snow cover is now much better than a week ago. You can get everywhere without difficulty and the pistes, even after the recent rainfall should still be very good.

I'm certainly glad I left it until after 2pm before heading out. Lots of people skiing in non-Goretex who were seriously soaked, but the last couple of hours of the day were fun in that "bracing weather" sort of way

@chrisb, there's snow in Bourg St Maurice! You certainly can't ski down to the valley floor (approx 850m), but even with the rain of the last couple of days the Tarentaise is white from bottom to top.
I skied down to Arc 1600 a lot during the last three days and the piste coverage is very good, and plenty of side of the piste snow.
