Starting to get busier up there now as more holiday makers start to arrive. Not mush extra open this weekend compared to last, just Albona II and a run off it. They're pushing plenty of artificial snow around Nasserein to get the beginners area up and running, which has also had the benefit of widening out the piste there. Still nice out on the pistes, although one or two patches where bits of undergrowth are popping through and a few more icy patches appearing.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Blue Sky day 0C on Gampen.
All Top Lifts (Rendl,Kapall, Valluga) cloised except Schindler.
Still way to warm for the next few days. Looking at Heavy Rain on Wednesday & Friday Snow above 2000Metres.
Wouldn't be surprised if Kapall opens in the next couple of days, they've had the piste bashers up there today moving stuff around. Limited tho, probably the red alongside the t-bar and then the blue down from there to Gampen. Happy valley has now been pisted (much better!) and has markers down it, although the info boards were still saying it's closed... Temperatures were cold enough to still have some cannons running this morning, especially in the shade.

Has anyone been across and skied Lech or Zurs? I'm out there at the weekend and am wondering how it's looking.

@sugarmoma666, the skiing is much better round in Lech/Zürs than St Anton. You can't ski from Zürs to Lech, you have to jump on one of the free ski busses, but you can ski from Lech (Rufikopf) down to Zürs, it was marked as an itinerary route alongside the piste as opposed to the blue shown on the piste map, probably due to the lack of width in some paces and there were the odd stones/patches of undergrowth peeping through.

thanks @stanton, great stuff. People really were made of sterner stuff in those days.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Any news on what the rain/snow did today?? Pondering on whether it's worth coming out for Xmas week.
You know it makes sense.

Looking at the long term forecast I'd suggest not if you have any flexibility in your dates. Latest news I have from weather people is no major storms are likely until New Year at the earliest.
Obviously there is skiing and lifts are open, and it's a great place to be at Xmas (Xmas is much quieter than New Year), so if you've booked I certainly wouldn't change plans, but it's not looking like an epic Xmas this season.

Weather. (Official)
Last remains of nightly unsettled conditions will leave us on Thursday morning, the sun will soon return to the skies. A new period of rather stable, though not absolutely bright weather will settle in, as larger patches of clouds will cover the sun already on Friday. Precipitation is not expected anymore. The weekend promises mostly sunny weather and the temperatures will remain very mild for the season. More changeable weather is forecast for the beginning of next week, however, a significant and long term temperature decrease will certainly not approach.
With this massive Sahara Fohn right now and continuing for the next few days the snowmaking & piste folks have a battle

Going Tuesday, not changing plans its an awesome place to be at Christmas, still confident it wont let us down.....just wish I'd cool down though! 10 days on piste carving isn't that much an exciting prospect, never skied in rain before, don't intend starting now....
@Markymark29, hire some decent piste skis sub 80mm, try some slaloms at 65mm underfoot and some longer GS type skis, you'll be pleasantly surprised I'd hope!

@Markymark29, at least it won't be busy, the Germans and Dutch will stay at home... How far is Hintertux from St Anton?

Just back from a short trip (3 1/2 days skiing). Pistes were much better than expected, especially Lech and St Anton, but everywhere we went we enjoyed even if we had to do a bit of picking our way through in places (particularly on itinerary routes but still well worth doing where they are open). The main joy though was the empty pistes. That was the norm, from time to time a bunch of people arrived but in general it was the odd skier/snowboarder in the distance. Even the runs home were a pleasure! The rain in the resort nearly put us off yesterday morning, but turned to snow sooner than expected and we had some great runs in new snow up top. Skied all the way back down and the snow was holding up well. Feel like I've had a lovely holiday, full on ski and so worth skipping Xmas preparations for.

Heavy rain over the pass last night. Just turned to snow on St Christoph... then immediately back to rain again at the lower end of the village. Maybe over 1900m 10-15cm snow might have accumulated, but that's just a guess.

Further than Pitztal, Kauntertal, Sölden and Stubai glaciers
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

They had some snow higher up yesterday. Schindler is closed today.
+4C on at Galzig. Nice sunny (sunscreen) terrace weather on Gampen interupted by some valley clouds drifting thru now & again.
Sonnenkopft will open tomorrow but because of the snow situation Only for Foot passengers.
Over in Zurs. Muggengrat-Täli (long run back to Zurs), East facing Red runs & Triitkopfbahn are closed.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@clarky999, Ain't getting into that, they'll be rammed. I'll make do with a few piste runs and potentially more beers than normal

@kitenski, Someone might post a picture on FB, I'd never be able to show my face again, sub-100?
Good idea maybe......

@clarky999, It'll be reet whatever....... I'm still holding onto the fact that I've been 3x in the past when its been green fields on arrival and decent powder up above Gampen, and white-over in town the following morning! Only thing it wasn't 7-8C at mid-station. Hate being away when everyone is fed up.

@Markymark29, I'd be surprised if you can't find something good to ski (especially within a short skin) high up around Lech/Stuben, but you will have to be v careful about rocks!

@Markymark29 That would take a miracle with current weather model outputs but hey, it's Xmas, the perfect time for miracles.
Lack of snow or not, I'm looking forward to by Boxing Day trip to St.Anton, maybe just not as excited as I would have been if it was currently buried under powder. No sense in cancelling (tour op, Crystal) so flight is paid for, transfer is paid for chalet and food are paid for. Lift passes are not paid for so we'll decide on the specific of that when we get there.
We'll wait until mid next week to decide on any modifications in clothing e.g. less warm gear, more running/walking gear. Ski carriage is paid for so they are going. We'll get some skiing done either way, and if it advances our 8-yr-old's skiing ability it'll be a successful trip.
Although it's likely to be our only chance of skiing abroad this winter, we do live less than 1.5hrs drive from Glenshee/Lecht and within a weekend trip of the other Scottish resorts. Hopefully this mild mushy winter can't continue in the same rut so we should get some skiing done in Scotland before the winter is out. That expectation tempers some of the disappointment.
Stanton, I know a lot of people like me have little choice but to go ahead, but do you think the slopes the New Year week will be quieter than usual because of the relative lack of snow this year? Especially in a place that lots of people tent to go for the off-piste?

At this juncture there is way more snow in the Arlberg than at this time last year.
New Year is full of repeat (20,30 seasons) visitors . I still expect New Year to be rammed .
They will maintain the pistes top to bottom regardless how warm.
Be aware. The lift company does not give ANY (under any circumstances) refunds because of conditions or if you want to change/alter your pass.. So if you buy aweek pass & not satisfied (which you should not be) thats just to bad.
If not sure better to buy day or halfday or late lift pass.
I'm not generally an alarmist type, but I must admit to starting to be a tad nervous about w/e 7-11th Jan. Knowing my luck the storm of the century will hit on the 8th...

@Dr John, That was yesterday, following a small (maybe 15cm?) top up above ~1800m on Wednesday night.

Quite possible with such a long warm dry period !!
Never know we may get an Epic Dump ( like the one back in 2012 Cyclone Andrea)
