Weathercam, there wasn't a photo associated with the card, but perhaps one is taken at the first lift? I guess snowangel. would know better.

Had around 10cm from the looks of things, hopefully they should have had more over the Col as that's where I'm heading after I've dug the van out (again).
Mrs is planning on first lifts here.

Monday 27th Serre Report
Mrs did indeed go for first lifts and reported via text to me in La Grave over 20cm of fresh untracked on the Vallons and did three runs before it started to get tracked out.
Tuesday 28th
Very cold and pistes in great condition found a few stashes this morning between helping a friend we have staying who is back skiing after many years of snow boarding, and he's 66!
Yesterday had a really gnarly drive over to La Grave and was worried that lift would be shut due to strong winds - but we ended up scoring a classic LG day, though going back over the Col weather really closed in and was almost scary at times as it seemed I was the only idiot driving.
Once down below 1650m weather was totally different - then had a quick 20mins at home before back in the car and driving to Oulx to pick friend up who had taken the train from Ashford to Paris, then changed and on to Oulx.
Forecast is for more snow tomorrow which figures as I'm back over to LG for three days

Grrrr... just written loads and the Club Med WiFi booted me off.
Anyway I just wanted to report that we found some lovely snow this afternoon. I was with ESF so not 100% sure but think it was at the top of a long chair (Vallons) between Villeneuve and Monetier. First time we trekked along the ridge to the right. Next time to the left.
Instructor reckons a fair bit of snow all day tomorrow and a lovely day Thursday.

Just driven over to Oulx (from Serre Chevalier 40mins), the town 4km below Sauze, where my mate was getting train back to Paris and then Eurostar to Ashford, and by the time we left was snowing heavily whilst here in Serre hints of sunshine.
Also looked like Cesana / Oulx might have had more snow since I was over there on Friday.
Just goes to show the dramatic difference in conditions local topography can cause.
Day off the skis today, and take dogs for a walk me thinks, and do some path clearing

Yesterday (Monday) we missed out on the snow forecast, and that I encountered down in Oulx.
This morning it's a far better scenario and one could almost say it's snowing "hard" and various forecasts have snow today and tomorrow (heavier) with Thursday maybe being a first lifts morning!
See the snow falling on the cam from our apartment, together with daily updates, forecast etc here

Hello All,
Son in law is driving to Briancon from the UK tomorrow and should be at the Lauteret mid-afternoon. For the last couple of days, Inforoute05 has been showing red conditions on the col. Does anyone know what it's like from first hand experience? Are chains or snow-tyres needed? With more snow forecast (I thnk, but yet to check), it looks like it will be no better and possibly worse tomorrow...
Would they be better heading to Gap and coming up from the south?
After the bad start to the year it looks like the snow gods are making up for it now...
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Kevin Byrne, I've been going up and over a fair number of times recently it some pretty damn gnarly scary conditions (beginning of last week and last Friday) and even Sunday which was no where near as bad cars were coming down with chains on.
It's not the snow that's the problem over the Col it's the wind which can reduce viz to nigh on zero, can be fine all the way to just before Lauzet then it all goes pear shaped.
We have not had the snow that's been forecast, though that will always change, if money is not too much of an issue the I'd say go via Frejus.
You coming out again?

Thanks Gavin
If they use the Frejus I'll get them to buy a carnet of 10 journeys or whatever and I'll take if off their hands.
We're back on 8th March for 8 days.
We went to Kitzbuehel for a few days in mid January - the week before the Hahnenkamm race - but the snow was very scarce the race run (the Streif) was closed to prepare it for the race so we never got to ski it
Seems like you're having a whale of a time.

Kevin Byrne, we bought a carnet for the van at €170 and I think we've used six of them already and I'll be using another two this weekend, for a car I think it's €125
Hopefully catch up when you're out as you'll probably be wanting to get away from high season hordes

Kevin Byrne, snowing steadily here this morning in the valley some wind here, though have just checked the live weather station at the Col and 70km gusts !!!
Think Frejus might be a good option if he doesn't want to faff with chains
Moyen sur 10min : 50 km/h
Direction : NNE
Rafale maxi sur 10 min : 61.2 km/h
Rafale maxi depuis 0h : 71 km/h à 6:24
Good site for Col information and weather
All the models have various accumulations of anywhere between 5 and 20 !!!!!!!!!
Might nip up the hill around lunchtime to see what conditions are like, and then make plans for tomorrow

Weathercam,
Showing Black this morning in Inforoute.
There are live web-cams (some are regular stills updates every few minutes) on Inforoute05 also and the conditions on the top don't look good. Even Monetier looks challenging.
I texted them this morning. Haven't had a reply but I think they might head for Gap on the basis that they know that route and they won't have to risk Montgenevre being difficult also.
Thanks for the site links.
Avalanche risk is back up to 4 it seems also.
Should be a good day tomorrow (jealous)!
See you in March hopefully.

Been feckion bonkers this afternoon and still chucking it down.
We went up this afternoon around 14:15 and it just started getting heavier and heavier, not the powder but the volume of snow falling.
So much snow that you needed to really let the skis run to stand any chance of getting down some slopes, had some great tree runs, though OH was not having a good time with the viz and letting the skis run.
Once back down went along (as planned) to pick the big fat skis up she's going to use tomorrow these are they.
So far so good, then told the guy next part of the plan in that we were going to La Grave, and he told us that they had shut the Col, and true enough signs were showing Ferme - anyway not a major issue as think we'll have enough snow!
Then next bit of "excitement" trying to get van up to the apartment, turned in and took a run at it, and was not going to happen, slid back into a bit of a drift, then tried to go forward into a side car park below where we are and that was all being cleared by the local contractor, my neighbour below who is an old guide, owns the bureau des guides, patiniore and other stuff, and can be a bit of a pain as the whole area is prive (he thinks) and he takes great delight in moving the snow with his plough and blocking the entrances to other residences he believes do not have right of access through what he thinks is his land, they then get on the phone to the Marie and it gets cleared and so the game goes on!
Luckily I get on ok with him, but I wanted to have a go at getting up my hill, so reversed out to take another run, and what was coming down a feckin commune snow plough, so I had to reverse back out, and I went into a drift that would not let me get out - so on with the uber quick snow chains, and plough driver was most impressed at the speed of putting them on.
So it was back into Jean Claudes parking area and he must have had some happy pills as he directed me into a place he had just cleared.
And yes dan100, the post is covered and it's still chucking it down, when we left there was a good 20cm showing!
I did set up my GoPro into times lapse mode before I left so will take a look and see what I have!
Big question now is, what the weather will be tomorrow and which lifts will be open, because will be skiing here!
"Edit" Time lapse vid not good battery ran out so did not get it when it really started chucking it down, but now know what to do next time round!

Weathercam, Sounds like it's all happening right now.
The intrepid quartet made it to Briancon via Gap yesterday. Had to use the chains round La Mure but otherwise it was fine. Dunno if the tunnel would have been a better option - presumably Montgenevre was open though it too might have been slow.
All the webcams are showing tons of snow so guess some of the higher lifts will be closed until the avalanche risk diminishes. Only problem for the lads is they only have a few days and want to cover as much ground as possible. Looks like they might have a long journey home also on Sunday. But that's a long way off right now.
PS don't really want to be sitting in the office today!!

Strange morning, started off with light rain and temps at +0.5, temps are still +0.5 but is now snowing heavily and a fair old white out up the hill I'd surmise
Was thinking about going up and taking a look, but will wait and see.
And as ever, have the usual transport concerns as I have to get one daughter from here to Grenoble airport tomorrow to catch a bus to Tignes (as I refuse to drive up there again, especially on a Saturday with bad weather), so will face the options first thing in the morning.
Lautaret - will it be open, then if open will be fine driving down to the dam probably before picking up all the muppets from LDA and then ADH onwards to Bourg
Montgenevre / Frejus hopefully light traffic going up early in the morning and the muppet factor not too bad down to Oulx, negative yet one more ticket used from the carnet
Gap, never done that before, so not too sure it's an option unless we wake to serious shed loads of snow (watch that happen)
And as I've been typing this, think can safely say it's puking down.
Off to Briancon and will leave the van at the bottom of the hill as I think it's going to be gnarly

Weathercam, as we are Newbies to SC forgive the daft question, but with the forecast for some heavy snow next week can we still expect to get out every day? We usually visit Courchevel/La Tania/VT and have never lost a day through snow although we have obviously adjusted our expectations. And we stay ON piste.
|
|
|
|
|

t40ora, sort of depends where you are staying and on the volume of snow and conditions up top.
For example, last season in March we had a huge dump and we drove to Monetier where they only had one lift open (the smaller chair not the Bachas chair) so skiing was limited.
If it's windy up top then they will close the links from the various areas, which is more often the Monetier link rather than Villeneuve / Chantermerle.
So question is where are you staying next week, I think worst case scenario is that some lifts up top might be shut and the Monetier link, but you should be fine.
It's not so much the snow that could be the issue but the wind!
