How much wind is needed to close Scottish lifts? The day I twisted my knee all the lifts were closed and it was not blowing more than a 6, I'm sure, but that was a long time ago and maybe the lifts are made of sterner stuff these days.

pam w, depends which way the wind is blowing, if blowing up or down the lift line it's less likely to damage the lift than if it's blowing across but of course there's a limit to how windy it can get when blowing down or up the lift line for people to safely use the lift. At Cairngorm the funicular can run in very windy conditions and there are times when that's the only lift running, not sure about say the gondola at Nevis. Areas like The Lecht are less affected by wind too, for example there were around 3 days at half-term when the lifts were all off at Cairngorm but The Lecht happily ran their lifts because there was very little wind or the wind was only gusting heavily at the top.
As scotia suggests there aren't many 'new' lifts so most of them will be the same ones you remember although I believe some have new engines and gearboxes that mean they can run more safely in windier conditions (the speed a lift runs at can affect it's operating capacity in windy conditions).

Im hoping the weather will still change and with it bring some snow however i cant say im too optimistic now. |
Why ? There is nearly two months skiing left in the three valleys ? |
Yes I know there is but meribel web cam is showing slush and serious amounts of grass... So unless any new snow comes soon I can't see what's there lasting much longer

Hells Bells, No precipitation here, and it's a couple of degrees above zero at 1500m, so probably just as well. Looks like you might get some good stuff in the near future.

GFS 12z operational takes a slightly different route at the end of next week, keeping it milder for longer... Though it is something of an outlier. Mean takes it cool and control takes it cold.
Snow coming through for the middle of next week across much of Alps, Italy in particular. Snow line looks around 1800m+.
Snow now in Southern French Alps and particularly North West Italy. And more tomorrow
In Scotland snowing now. More tomorrow. More Monday. More Tuesday, though by Tuesday temperature will be up a bit and snow line may be around 1000 to 1200m.

Continuing to look cooler from the end of the coming week across all the models.
In the meantime mild temperatures will continue, low pressure moving into the Mediterranean will bring snow at altitude in the Alps from Wednesday and Thursday though rain lower down. The main focus seems to have been shifting slightly east over the last few runs.
The 06z operational brings in a further weaker band on Saturday, by which time temperatures would be a lot cooler. In fact 06z takes a really rather cool approach and in far FI brings more cold from the north.

Heavy duty foehn winds doing a fair bit of damage to the already rather tenuous snow cover in much of the French alps. Chamonix meteo forecasts foehn winds continuing for first half the week.

You know it makes sense.
|
pam w, yup...
"The risk of foehn winds making an appearance at the weekend. " [Monday 07 March].
According to the Arlberg weather forecast:
"...the southerly foehn wind will lose strength at the beginning of next [this] week"
The latest operational runs seems to have been downgrading the potential for snow/rain midweek in the French Alps. Although the mean and control runs are more bullish.

Still snowing in Serre Chevalier, although it stopped for a wee while early this morning. It has continued for much of the day, and is now snowing quite hard again in the village. No Foehn here.

Cooling trend from end of week still in place. How long it stays in place up for question...
That said GFS keeps the mean south of seasonal average (though it's a milder operational than 06z) for most of the run and out in FI is continuing a weak trend to take things colder still.
Snowfall Wednesday and Thursday looks strong for Italy and western parts of Austria, eastern Switzerland. Freezing line looks to be around 1800m+ in the west, perhaps 1600m+ in the east.

adam.b, Yep, it's been a good winter for Italy and it looks like there is more to come, I was puzzled on another thread to see someone suggesting they'd heard it had been a "poor season in the Alps," which doesn't really seem to me to have been the case nor what has been reported.
Really rather poor in Northern French Alps and much of Switzerland, below average, though great at times, in Austria, definitely above average, if not outstanding in Italy (probably the same in Scotland ie not on a par with last year over the season even with a lot of snow in last few days) probably same in Southern French Alps.

nozawaonsen, not many brits - relatively - go to Italy, thus the perception of a poor year as the French honey-pot resorts have been very poor - take a look at the 123_456 pictures on the Les Manures thread if in doubt

well it's been a poor season in much of France (disastrous in the Jura) and, I think, in much of Switzerland and the more recent reports from Austria make depressing reading too. The report from Cathy, on the Austrian snow report thread, suggests conditions in the Ski Welt are currently a lot worse than they are here. The most recent report from Kitzbuhel also described the kind of terminal spring conditions which ought not to be happening well before the middle of March. There may yet be a few great weeks of snow - I'd be very surprised if we didn't get some reasonable dumps March/April, and it's too early for a verdict on the season. But it's certainly the worst, in 9 consecutive years, that I've known in these parts.
It's snowing here now, but not in a way which looks like it means it. Just a few flocons.
