skimottaret We were lucky with the weather on our first two days (Fri & Sat ) - but had
a whiteout day yesterday at Val Thorens. Still enjoyed ourselves though.
Only (slight) criticism of the trip was surprise that they are charging full wack for an Espace
Killy lift pass, with not much open at Tignes in particular.

Tuesday December 4th, 2012
Heavy snowfall continues with abundant accumulations. The snow line is around 500 m on our massive indoor and 1000 m to the Alps. It should evolve during the day to 800/100 m.
from the Val D website.........not quite sure what the indoor bit is supposed to mean??

dorsetboy, I like that site, it's a good one to check each morning as it gives a great idea of the local weather and flags up any lift closures as you eat your breakky

I am about to wet myself at excitement of all that snow....5th Jan and counting...woohoo!!!
dorsetboy I am looking on www.valdinet.com, the lift status on there is the same as the one I have previously looked at in other seasons for Deux Alpes and looks the same as your Tignes one above - there are a series of different websites for different resorts. Have always found the LDA one pretty spot on, so would hazard a guess that the Tignes one you have posted a link for will be too. Links are at the bottom of the webpage.

I've used them alot. Think their overall name is "skinets" as they have sites for Meribel, Chamonix, Val etc. Particularly like the snow reports that they get done, although not all resorts have a reporter. Not a bad set of websites, loads of generally accurate info, webcams and stuff.

kitenski, hows the level 2 going?
you doing it with ICE?
The conditions are looking great although it may feel a waste when you are doing CT and when you get the weekend off you wont want to free ski too much as you'll be practicing bumps or carving lol.

Another 30 cm in the last 24 hrs - the Palafour has just opened - things a bit slow this morning after the Gourmet Evening at the Alpaka last night. A new team in the kitchen this year - anybody that's booked is in for a treat (and may need to buy bigger salopettes!).

stewart woodward,
If the "SCGB members" are all wearing light blue jackets they are the current club leaders course.
There's snow here in London.
I have ordered sunshine & blue sky for Espace Killy next week. I hope they keep the roads open up to Val next Sunday.

chocksaway,
I am in the Alpaka for a month from mid-Dec. By the end of it I will probably have to change my nom-de-plume to Porker1863. Thankfully I have room in my salopettes to allow for a little bit of expanded waistline

Just been told of an avalanche up on Toviere (Tignes) with a possible burial.
Rescue teams looking.
Don't have any further details at the mo.
The snow pack is very unstable and judging by the patterns on the roofs the wind has been having some fun too, so expect unstable slabs.
I was out on snowshoes/snowboard in the Boisses sector on Sunday and the snow was loose and unstable all the way through to the ground
with no bonding whatsoever. It's dumped on top of that since then.
Be careful.

dorsetboy, AFAIUI The Hotel Bec Rouge is run by a Belgian Company called Skiworld, unfortunately therefore don't know anyone who has stopped there - buts its ski in out using the Chardonner Drag - which might be a bit extreme for some kids. If not walk round the corner and pole along in front of the Bec Rouge Apt Block and down to the Palafour. Its in a quiet location and about 8 mins walk from the Alpaka (if you are allowed out!)

Very little use of poles normally needed to get down to Palafour in the centre of resort. It does slope down gently. You will be able to ski back to the front door if you finish with the Palafour run. It is also possible to ski back by taking the short Millonex drag lift from the centre and heading left off the top. Normally quiet in the Bec Rouge building apart from when there are groups of school kids there

chocksaway, Tigski,
Thanks for the info. The company im with have booked the whole place out i think, so hopefully we wont cause too much carnage. And don't worry, i'll definitely be able to escape - soon as im done with the amazingness that is school kareoke/disco/quiz/bingo etc etc etc... Just wondered if anyone had ever been in, i know the rest of resort fairly well.
Just wish i was out there from this weekend, absolutely love the photos coming in.
On a totally different, and very sad note, Henry's Avalanche talk is reporting that 2 skiers were caught in an avalanche today under the aeroski. Go careful....

The webcams are looking SPECTACULAR this morning now the weather's cleared. I'm dying to be there!
The snow is epic, it looks like there's been so much, it's filled in the halfpipe in Tignes lol
Seems to be much more open today as well. I can see people on Trolles, and going up the Palafour chair.

For anyone in Tignes/who knows resort practices better than me, how many pistes and lifts are the likely to have open by next weekend? Obviously i realise that the metre+ of snow this week is going to take some bashing, and some serious avalanche bangs going off, but it'd be great to see more of the resort open up by the time i get there. Selfish i know, but i've been waiting months to get out there!
Also over in Val - are they still going ahead with the Criterium de la Premier Neige WC Events at the weekend, given the forecast for tomorrow?
kitenski, love the photos.

dorsetboy,
I agree withstefoy4me,. It should be mostly open unless we get another big dump towards the latter half of next week. Sometimes they don't open all before Christmas week to protect some pistes but I think we can assume there will be quite a bit of cover everywhere and I expect it to be 90% open
If all goes to plan I will reach the Alpaka around 10pm next Friday(14th) and I am there for the whole of the Christmas period. On my own too. Who knows what the bar bill will end up being !! Pop in if you need to escape from the school kids.
The body is creaking and groaning so I will open up with a gentle piste day on the Saturday. I am going to be cautious about off piste at least initially - from all accounts it is a pretty unstable snowpack as evidenced by yesterday's events
