Whitegold, fcuk off you pillock.
Still snowing this evening and more to come. If you are not sure how much, take a look at the recorded highlights of the 4 Hills Ski Jumping competition from Bischofshofen this afternoon. That is about 20kms away and lower! I went out before they finished, but it was stopped again due to strong gusts and poor vis from the driving snow.
More fresh powder on the pistes tomorrow for all of us

Just back from another day of cruising the reds and blues around Wagrain and Alpendorf. As the light went, we made our way down to the car as the snow storm was about to hit. I could hear the lift company giving out warnings that the highest gondola could close due to high winds. Resorts are starting to quieten down a wee bit as the New Year people return home. Lots of day trippers today, probably more tomorrow but at least they seem to know how to behave on piste.
Now snowing fit to bust and looks set for the evening. Looks like it is building up to be a mega mid season right now! Shame I have to go to work on Monday, but with so much to do the time will fly past and I'll be back on the slopes on Thursday and Friday. I'm planning to work weekends instead of the quieter mid-week days.

New snowhead and first time poster here, but no stranger to the Ski Amade region, specifically St. Johann/Alpendorf/Wagrain
I was in St. Jo./Alpendorf Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 on our annual ski lesson vacation (tune ups for all) with my 3 children. I was smart this year and bought season tickets for the kiddos using the pre-Dec. 6th deal. What a steal! The week we were there was busy, but conditions started out good and ended great and from what it looks like, it's only gotten better since we left.
Anyway, now that we're all tuned up AND now that snow conditions have improved even more, I want to head back down next weekend (Thurs. night - Monday) as my children have a long weekend holiday.
We've only really skied the Alpendorf/Wagrain/Flachau areas of Ski Amade and I am very comfortable with my knowledge of those runs, the huts, lifts, etc. Unless I can get some friends to come along, I may be skiing with my 3 kids alone and I don't want to step too far out of my league with them.
Can anyone recommend a new area for us to check out? I want to broaden my horizons in the Ski Amade area and check out some of the other areas since we have these passes. Part of me wants to just go where we are comfortable, but I hate to not explore the rest of the area.

novafan, Welcome to snowHeads! I'm a long time user of this region. Try basing yourself in Altenmarkt or Radstadt and investigate the Zauchensee/Flachau-Winkl area to begin with. Then move east towards Schladming stopping off at Fageralm and Reiteralm to discover 2 areas all to often overlooked by most visitors.
In the other direction you can ski the Hochkönig areas of Dienten, Mühlbach and Maria Alm if you have the Salzburger Super Ski passs. The Zell am See areas, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, bad Gastein and the Gastein areas are also on the Salzburg Super ski pass and some of them are also just on the Ski Amade pass.

novafan, as Samerberg Sue says, there's loads to be going at in Ski Amade. The Hochkönig (Dienten, Mühlbach, Maria Alm and the rest) area is not far away at all, neither is the Gastein Valley to be honest. It's all on the Ski Amade pass. I've day tripped to Dienten from Bad Gastein for the last 2 years and it's a great place.
In my opinion, I wouldn't bother with the Salzburger Super Ski pass as there are many resorts under the one Ski Amade pass, you'll have more than enough to keep you going.
Cheers
Kersh

Looking at the webcams, there is so much snow across Ski Amade at the moment. I'm sure the likes of Waynos and co will be here later to post some pics later on. It looks epic!!

Off to Ski Amade on Friday, hope we get some good weather/conditions, some forecasts suggest really quite mild from Wednesday

You know it makes sense.
|
sussexmartlet, what do you mean by mild? It is dumping snow right now and the forecasts I'm reading are sending the thermometer back into the freezer?
Try following the Weather thread to get a better view of the incoming!

Didn't bother to try and dig the car out this morning, so caught the bus to Radstadt. It continued to snow all day and it's still snowing heavily now. flangesax says it's the most snow they've seen in the valley in the 6 years they've been here. Probably won't get the car out tomorrow either so it might be the bus again. There's more snow than you can shake a stick at.

Scarpa, I did spare you a thought when I did this, this morning
Have to say it was worth getting out of bed at 6am to dig out the car, Zauchensee was deserted til about 10am, the powder was truly amazing, I can´t believe how much we have, was pretty chilly up there too which made it extra fluffy. Driving through town today they are actually loading up the snow onto big lorries and shipping it out Never seen that before.

After an enforced 2 week trip to the UK to mill around shops and watch TV (love UK Xmas) I've come back to Schladming to discover quite a lot of fresh snow. This was the car we left where we're staying above town
Bizarrely we arrived at Linz airport to green grass and no sign of any snow.As we approached the mountains the snow grew and grew. The roads were very clear, one diversion on the B320 in the Enns Valley as it skirts the base of the Grimming mountain, I assume avalanche risk or downed trees. Looking forward to getting the skis on tomorrow, after I dig that car out.

Just back now from 3.5 weeks mainly in the Gastein Valley & here is my short summary. Arrived on the 16th and cover was shallow but with no one around the skiing was great. Had a good day out in Dorfgastein with Kersh and mates, including some decent off piste runs. Then left for a few days and arrived back xmas day to some great skiing as it had snowed fairly heavily on the 23rd (I think). However after a few days things were starting to look pretty dire as the crowds started scraping everything away. Then it snowed on the 29th/30th. NBT mentioned it a few posts back... probably best ever day on the 31st. Powder everywhere and we were skiing powder in places I did not know was possible (e.g. through the trees on the lower run into Bad Gastein on Stubnerkogel). That batch of snow held itself very well and we had amongst others an awesome morning in Dienten trying to do the Konings tour as fast as possible... by afternoon though it was moguls & ice everywhere (Kersh - remember that run down into Dienten from the Maria Alm end... leg burner again). I really like what they've done with the new centre there.
Then last week it started snowing... old news now but I have never seen snow like that in Bad Gastein. And I never thought I would say this about Bad Gastein but there was actually too much snow. Upper runs were closed and even off piste on the lower runs the powder was too deep (for my skills anyway). If you picked the wrong line and got stuck on a flat bit it was a nightmare trying to walk out. I would say snow depths over a metre in places. And it would not stop snowing. By the time I left on Sunday morning there was another foot or two to be cleared from the top of the car. Which made the trip back to Munich pretty hair raising trying to get the car back in time.
Needless to say I'm now trying to find a way to make sure this was not my only trip of the season.
All in all an amazing contrast in conditions over the three weeks with the best saved for last. My perceptions of what type of snow is possible in the Ski Amade area have now changed. It also shut my GF up ... she has previously spent 5 yrs in Aspen and after two pretty poor seasons in Gastein hadn't been too impressed with the snow quality.
One thing that hasn't changed - the swedish owner of Haeggbloms can still drink shot for shot more Jack Daniels then anyone else I've ever come across.
Will watch with interest as the rest of the season unfolds on this thread.

Thanks Samerberg Sue and Kersh. I'm honing in on Flachau, Altenmarkt or Radstadt. We've always been based closer to Alpendorf, so I'm excited to check something else out. I've skied to Flachau (from Alpendorf), but have never been to the town or nearby. I'm excited about the snow reports, for sure!

Speedster, nice report!!! Oh yep I remember the leg burner back to Dienten!! .. we did that twice. We should have just called the girls and met them at the bottom!
And yes, there is no way anyone can compete with owner of Haeggbloms drinking JD. He would beat us all if we teamed up! Glad you showed me that place, i'll go back for sure.
Take it easy, maybe see you out there in the summer!
Cheers

Hello everyone, just been offered a job in Munich. I guess Ski Amade will be my local ski area so thought I would say hello and ask for any tips, advice etc. on moving to Munich, nearby skiing or mountainbiking, anyone do DH?

lynseyf, Ski Welt is closer and the first port of call for most Müncheners! Let me know if you take the job and need any help sorting all the bureaucracy out. It can be an absolute nightmare if you get it wrong!

Hi Sue I have accepted the job and will be starting some time in February or March. Thanks for the offer but hopefully me new employers should help me get everything sorted and I'll have a look at Ski Welt

lynseyf, just sing out if they drop you in it! It is normal to provide furnished accommodation at first (up to 3 months depending on how high up the tree you are). Finding affordable accommodation in Munich is hard, it is the most expensive city in Germany! Living out of town is a good way to cut your costs.

It's been snowing again all day today. Today we skied in Zauchansee and all pistes had a generous covering of new snow. Hoping for a bit of sunshine tomorrow,so we can enjoy all the fresh stuff off piste.
