Inheritance tax: AFAIK, the threshold is now £325k, and assessed only on the total amount given by the donor, and then tax is liable only on the donor estate, not from the recipient.

Ok so we are so close Ive decided to chip in a bit more (Just a tenner more) but i wont take much to get us over the target and make it a worthwhile story for the media.
Anyone else?

easiski, this is a public thread and admin's real identity is common knowledge. Wouldn't be very sensible of him to run off with the loot, would it? It surely wouldn't be worth him risking fraud charges, as well as massive adverse publicity, for this relatively paltry amount. Your father may not wish to donate money that is not reclaimable against tax - that's a different point - but I doubt that his donation would, in practical terms, be unsafe, even if it were handed over in coinage, let alone a cheque made payable to Chemmy, as suggested.

It's great for everyone to support Chemmy, but a pity that it's not easier for non-snowheads. My dad wanted to contribute, but not surprisingly as a cautious pensioner, only wanted to contribute by cheque made out to a 'chemmy appeal' of some sort. There is apparently no way for him to do this. We all know that Admin is honest and reliable, and trust him to forward all the money raised to Chemmy, but others don't necessarily. |
Can you not persuade him through logical debate that there is absolutely no risk that his money won't go to the intended recipient?

I dont know how this would work with Paypal fees etc...but what about a new thread for one last push to get us to our target...maybe just ask for £1 each. That would soon add up and even really skint people would find it hard not to donate £1.

What's the target? I don't remember reading that we had one.

That was my figure I think, based on nothing other than guesstimating 200 people donating £20 each. admin has been discussing things with the GB camp so whatever he suggests is likely to be related to actual need rather than ambition which is where my figure came from. However, I don't think we should stop because we have reached the absolute minimum needed to keep the team on the road for the rest of the winter...

rob@rar, no, we shouldn't stop, but appeals always run out of oomph, and then one has to dream up new ideas, arbitrary targets, or whatever, to breathe new life into them. It's the first law of fundraising in this way, unfortunately.

Hurtle, yes, of course. But what happens if people think you have reached a target, which was set in a very arbitrary fashion? I'd guess people are less likely to make a donation?

rob@rar, erm, in this case - just thinking aloud here - admin should publish something about the specifics of what Chemmy is going to do with our money and then should suggest to us: either a) that we have reached an insufficient target to do x with it, so please could we make an effort to step up with the balance; or b) that we should try and raise a bit more anyway, because that will enable her to purchase y as well. Something like that.

We seem to have raised a good amount of cash here - is Chemmy actually aware of our efforts on her behalf or is this going to be a surprise to her? Our skiers must be pretty put out with their supporting group going bust before the Olympics I think it would do their morale the world of good to know that they have loads of supporters who are wishing them well and trying to do something to help. There could be seconds subtracted from downhill times if the skiers do it in a happy frame of mind rather than a worried one.

Boredsurfing, The Range Rovers all went back on the 7th Feb when the insurance ran out after SSGB went bust!!!!
They are using the bashed up VW vans with a fair few thousand miles on the clock.

Plugboy, the VW builders vans probably more reliable (and of more use) than the SSGB dodgy Discos (puts on flame-proof undercrackers)

Roy Hockley, that is her on the Colmar ad and, by the way, it's THE worst ad in the history of TV in my opinion. It would sell cheese very well indeed. I reckon she'll have been paid something for it but mainly it will have been part of the deal for Colmar providing kit for the whole team.
There are personal sponsors (money to athlete) and team sponsors (money to team).

If she is struggling for funds, she should consider doing a spot of secretarial work. Given that a single post of 230 words has resulted in £4k, imagine how much she could earn by rattling out a few letters and documents.....

Lara Gut was the best paid sportwoman in Switzerland last year... and she's not won anything. So surely Chemmy could have capitalized better on her sponsorship. I'm surprised she's living hand to mouth.

davidof, I may be mistaken, but I believe earlier in the season she paid out a lot of money to trainers or something (in the order of £20K) which she was supposed to get back from SSGB, unfortunately that never happened which may be one of the reasons that she's in the current situation.

Bode Swiller, Yes it was cheesy. Sort of like ... "you've pulled and after some passion put on the Colmar gear and ski away"!! So from my reading, cheesy and risque! Would be surprised if she did not get some shekels for it though!

Sorry, but I am a bit fed up with people saying that anyone did well enough to be ranked 8th should be funded by individual donations . If the Feds got it wrong, it is down to their amateur attitude over many years . If someone is good enough, surely s/he can find corporate sponsorship?
