I use both of them, and j2ski as well, because it tends to wildly overestimate snow amounts and give me false hope..
A smattering of snow each day from Sunday is better than nothing anyway. I'm glad I've bought new goggles.

Roger C, As far as I know that is correct, all areas should have at least one uplift open to get you into the main ski area, but I am not sure if they are keeping to that agreement. Check out the la plagne thread they should have a better idea or go on the la Plagne web site. The Les Arcs - La Plagne link does not open for another week.

Thanks snowcrazy as usual the official La Plagne website is a wast of space! I've read that they are busing people from Montybear up to Plagne Centre but hopefully we'll be ok in Champagny with the gondola running.
Once the Vanoise is open perhaps we can meet up for a ski sometime. We have a few trips planned for this winter

I'm not worrying any more - it looks white so that's good enough for me. I'm in the middle of packing and just broke off to check the airline weight limit again as boots and helmet in checked baggage doesn't leave much spare for the rest of the kit. Still no complaints ..... only one more day at work, three sleeps and I'll be off.

Very late so just a quick up date.
Today has been very cold around -8 most of the time. The wind was very light and blue sky all day. The snow is holding up well in Arc 2000 bowl and all looks set to open over to Arc 1800 and Arc 1600 tomorrow. The grand col should also be opening on saturday weather permitting and the A. R. will open by Monday or Tuesday they hope. Other areas like Malgovert will open when they consider the snow level enough to be safe.
Villaroger might open later in the week and Peisey Vallandry will have some lifts open but you cannot ski to the bottom.
I will try and give a detailed update of lifts tomorrow. The canons have been running most of the day and they are busy shifting snow to make it possible to ski back to the Funicular.
Hope to see some of you on the hill tomorrow.

Shimmy Alcott, I thought that too - forecasts say a bit more over the weekend and then clearer. We're on an early flight and hope to get on the slopes for the afternoon. I've organised a chalet for 18 (through TO) - we all know each other well and most of us have been for the last 4 years together - so if there is a white out I'm in brilliant company.
snowcrazy, I've never been to this area before. Can you walk easily in the evening between 2000 and 1950 or is there a bus?

Free gondola between 1950 and 2000, about a 3 minute ride but wouldn't want to walk it. Runs till about 11pm at night.

Some pics of today. Please use this link to my webshots page.

Hope it works as this seems an easier option for me. I might also try and get my Facebook page going again to share pics and other details of all that is going on in Les Arcs. I will post a link if it seems to be a quicker option as now that the season s getting going I will not have so much time to play on here.

thefatcontroller, sorry but I think that at least one person needs to say it as it is. In fact it is not as bad as it sounds, I still had a great days skiing and I do like the night life in Arc 2000. Fun and within my pocket book limits. 2.50 Euro for a small beer instead of 3.50 at the O'chaud in 1950 ouch! I will try to be more positive tomorrow, ok

thefatcontroller, I like that cam, as it shows Vallandry clearly on t'other side and therfore can judge the snow line. 3-weeks to go and I am fairly optomistic now - certainly looks no worse than Xmas 97 (or was it 6) when it was very poor - but still enough to ski on

Boris, With 3 weeks to go its far to early to get depressed. Still looks better than 3-4? years ago when they couldn't even have canons on mid December it was so warm. They will have the cannons on all week but won't bash them out as they will want to hold them for the Xmas crowd who arrive next Saturday. Jez, Xmas is getting close

thefatcontroller, It's tough - luckily, with the kids I am not bothered if there is no endless fields of off-piste powder. I am more than happy cruising the pistes - the bowl above Vallandry can keep us entertained all day

kevinrhead, Where did you find all that rubbish. I just had a look on there site and could not find what you posted. If you want the real low down on Les Arcs you need to come here or go to the 'members meet up' chat on the SCGB forum. Do not worry about other stuff you may read. As I just wrote on another thread on snowheads. I write it as it really is, no frills. Do not get depressed it can always get better and anyway as another person on here often says, a bad day in the snow is better than any day in the office. (sorry can't remember who posted that first, but it is a good line ).
Now todays details.
Bad first: The new Arpette lift did not reopen today (what a surprise, not ). It is hoped to be working again by Tuesday. Till then those coming from 1600 must go down to the Transarc to get over to Arc 2000 bowl.
Now the good news. After the little snow fall last night today was quite white down to below 1600m It stayed cold all day so the canons have been blasting all day and you can now easily ski back to the Funicular in Arc 1600 on the blue and there is even enough to go down th red, but it will stay closed I would guess until next weekend when the big crowds arrive. The other runs in Arc 1600 are also closed but again mainly to save the snow until next weekend. You can now get down all the runs if you want, but they are asking people not to ski the closed runs.
They also opened the snowpark lift (but not the snowpark) and the Clocheret lift and all the runs above the Altiport. Good snow cover on most of them today. I did not hit any rocks all day.
On the 1800 side the main blue run down from the Mid station of the transarc to the bottom is ok after the fresh snow and the canons doing there job so getting back to 1800 from either the 1600 side or vallandry is now not a problem. Going down to Peisey Vallandry is still not to good, my friend choose the lift today rather than try to go down below the derby on skis this time. If anyone has skied down all the way please tell us what it is REALLY like. I do not want to try it yet and trash my skis or board.
Although it was quite cold today we had blue sky and the 2000 bowl was again in great condition. They have now added the Red Teppes piste. Has anyone spotted the piste that is missing in Arc 2000?
Do not know about the weather tomorrow, clear sky and stars right now, just have to wait and see.

I did not mean that it was a new piste, it has been there for years. I meant that they have just put the piste markers up and put the basher down it for the first time. Now you can ski it as a piste. |
