We had a very, very (very!) excellent lunch at La Paika
|
FlyingStantoni, we went there just for a chocolat chaud last year just after it opened and unfortunately didn't get to try for lunch this trip. Sounds delic so must make sure we go next time....... it was certainly very nicely done inside.
L'hottys at top of Nauchets has also had a revamp, much better terrace. I do love their collie

cardweg - Bar Nat (Bar National) is in St Jean d'Aulps - just next to the Gendarmerie. Excellent pizzas at 10-14 euros - two pizzas between three people would do most appetites.
If we're eating in Les Gets we invariably end up at L'hottys or Chez Nanon (just near the top of the Troncs lift), but...
...Lou - agree that the L'hottys refurb is very successful. We do find the food there a bit and miss though. They did an excellent Tarte Tatin Provencial (roated veggies on a puff pastry base) one day. Two days later the same dish was completely different and extemely disappointing...
...so, we'll be transferring our L'hottys affection to La Paika...
cardweg - other places we tend to gravitate to are La Grande Ourse on Mont Chery (top of the chairlift with the same name) (excellent "non-cheesy" food - bangers and mash particularly recommended - top deserts) and La Poya in Avoriaz (consitently good, homemade burgers and plat de jours - avoid the deserts though).
Pomme de Pin in Linderats has the best Tarte Tatin if you're after something sweet.
I'm sure others will pitch up with other suggestions.

Hi all,
I am hoping to take my 5 yearold away to Avoriaz for a long weekend this year. Dates are very flexible. Does anyone know if any where in Avoriaz breaks weeks up if they have avalibility?
I rather liked Avoriaz last year staying up there rather than going back and forth to Morzine with the little one sounds like a good plan especially with all the non skiing activitees to take her on when she is cold and tired.
Cheers

cardweg, I agree with you about La Grande Ourse at the very top of Mt Chery. We have just got back from there and the food and service is still first class - great menu. All run by an English family with a 10 week old baby to add to their stress as it was packed every day last week! I understand that they had to really jump through hurdles to get their place up and running - friendly european co-operation eh..! From what I can see, the restaurant has doubled the amount of people on Mt Chery from 10 to 20 skiers at peak times. Shhhh.....
Oops - as this is a snow report thread, I might add that the snow up there was fab too - lots of the soft fluffy stuff....

You're welcome.
We stayed in La Falaise last year and we are in Les Balcons du Soleil in a couple of weeks. I imagine it is almost the perfect resort for young kids, no walking in ski boots/carrying skis, loads of skiing, no gangs of yobs (nightlife is too quiet for the beer set), plus it was very quiet on the slopes at the same time last year with great snow.
I would definitely take my family there. The accomodation is perfect as it means that you can have food in if you want, epsecially with a young one who will go to bed early and it means that you can chill in the lounge rather than being in the one bedroom like in a hotel. I found La Falaise basic but clean, and how much is ski in/ski out convenience worth?
Enjoy.
cheers

After carrying my older childrens ski's around a few years back a ski in ski out is priceless
All the accom has now gone for a short break weekend form the 22nd but we managed to get a deal (i think) on a 1 bed apartment in Les Balcons du Soleill next weekend starting friday 16th.
Paid £472.00 for the 4 nights.
After the 30th i am realiably informed that they do not do short breaks up there just sat to saturday until mid of April.
What is the deal with the meal tickets it says £31.00 per adult for a three course meal two adults paying gives you a child free. Are these used in all the resturants up there or is it a buffet style resturant, any one know?
Is it worth me sorting the ski and boot hire out before i go or wait until we get there. It would then at least allow me to rush into the nearest hire shop rather than have to search for the first most valuble two hours we are there for the shop that turns out to be the furthest away from the accomidation as is possible.
Cheers

No idea about the meal buffets as I've never heard of them before
My mates have done some research and they say that there is a Twinner ship near to the accomodation that offers a good deal. If you book in advance at least you can get some discount.

Only one more day chained to the desk...
What's the story with pistes? Is everything open now or are there some that are still closed? What about the Swiss Wall?
As we're over in Les Gets, we probably won't buy a PdS pass for the week but rather choose a day here or there to nip across to the big area.
Do any of you "locals" have any thoughts on the spots to seek out? We are a wide ranging group from expert to solid, give-it-a-go intermediate.
Thanks,

Hi all, sorry haven't been updating you all of late.
In summary, beautiful weather, beautiful conditions, pistes have been consistently excellent for ages, snow temperature just right, off piste is good fun, moguls are big but soft, and more snow is coming, possibly a bit this afternoon (although I am currently looking out on clear blue skies) and a half decent amount forecast for Sunday onwards.
All good...

Looks like it's snowing in Chatel. Anything in LG/M yet?
Finally got a cheeky weekend planned but not for over 3 weeks. Start studying the wigglies in earnest now...

andyph, "Looks like it's snowing in Chatel", I would be surprised...a few flakes below the inversion in Geneva, sure, but not higher up. But before I rain on your parade I do see what you mean from the webcam though, it does look remarkably like it's snowing. Maybe some weird nano-climate thing going on?? Very odd.
Not to worry, snow forecast for all of next week... not being a weatherhead I find Chamonix Meteo to be a better guide to what's going on than any wigglies if that helps...

Well, under a new name, there you go. I'm used to being let down by forecasts but if even the webcams speak with forked tongue, what chance have you...?
I've always found Chamonix Meteo a bit, er, conclusive. I mean, if you can't debate the weather forecast, what's the point of being English?

Cheers Lou,
Happily ensconsed in the chalet & looking forward to a nice week, although we nearly didn't make it. Some W@nk*r in a 4x4 overtaking on a blind cornermet us in the middle of the road! There was a very quiet copule of minutes as we drove the final mile or so into the village.
Anyway, we're here now. A nice glass or two of red, some fresh bread, cheese & pate and we're ready to face the world.
Thanks for the good wishes.

Just come back from an excellent 8 days skiing in the PdS out of Morzine.
Pretty much all runs are open with a good covering, and although a bit hard-packed in places it generally can't be faulted considering we got only a very light sprinkling of the fresh stuff on the 7th I think and since then its been clear blue skies every day in the mountains (despite heavy clouds and a bit of snow by Lake Geneva).
First time in the PdS, and I was very impressed. Tended to head over to the sunnier slopes such as Les Crosets, Champery and Mt Chery in the morning, before racking up the miles elsewhere in the afternoon.
Buddha Bar in Morzine is selling Bud for €2.50 at Happy Hour from 5-7pm, which even with the dodgy exchange rate is pretty fair
