Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

simonmj66, cheers mate - any chance of tracking down a giant human-sized one? I would find that most useful for avoiding the end-of-day green.

Any better?

"Y" is the one two thirds to the right. The dodgy green is on the left - leave the green and Valentin (both have a similar starting position) well alone at the end of the day and take the Belle Etoile lift down - as other snowHead have said much safer and more fun at 4pm than doing Valentin or the green track/road - great views of world class wipeouts!!

Yeah I remember many a time roaring down that green, it's a lot hairyer than green for beginners at the end of the day. You usually got stuck behind some snowploughing horrors for half an hour Crying or Very sad

I presume apart from the green, la Valentin and Le Diable all the other runs are off-piste? I heard rumour of reds down to town, or is that a fable?

tommy10pages, the red I was talking about is on the very far right 'La Descente'. However it's not always pisted all the way down. the bottom would go along that meadow looking bit on the saddle on the far right (les Vallons)

From L - R (font got a bit smudged)
Les Posettes
Le combe Valentin
La Belle Etoile
La Grande Pente
Les Sapins
L'Y (as Brian says ee-greck)
Le Diable
La Descente

the higher run marked is the Super Diable. Le Diable is not as steep as most (decent black though), but is much longer than the Valentin. Look at the rise L - R. therefore it can be very tiring. Valentin is pisted every night and has cannons. Diable is usually pisted about every other day, L'Y was pisted about once a week last year. the rest are either too steep or just aren't pisted for various other reasons.

Les Posettes and Grande Pente are my favourites, although I've had some fab runs down l'Y in recent years.

Annie has just been down and they had a warm up day today which was fantastic they said. Very Happy I was too busy with cards and newsletters to go up! Sad

really the pics and the video that we called the Y are pics and vid from the couloir between the Y and the diable; that the first part it's pretty much steep than the others and at the second half way is really thin.....

Les posettes is really nice, easy acces not much steep and every time that you cross the demoiselles path you have a nice jump.

Valentin is pisted, we didn't do it really, but just next to the piste it's also nice, specially a little gully between the next piste valentine and the belle etoile that you can do straight or with tight turns

Belle Etoile and Grande Pente, maybe the steepests, specially nice grande pente to do GS turns in powder and finish in the trees just before jandri.

L'Y is nice as you starts practically at the top of cretes and the pitch is gradually so at the start you don't see the final, and you can ski really fast as it's wide enough......

The area reached from the top of cretes it's really amazing.........

metalhead132, Great descriptions - very clear for all who haven't been here. Very Happy Today I was working on the Cretes and afterwards I skied down the Grande Pente. It was great! Very Happy Very Happy Tracked powder, but I managed to find some untracked for the odd turn (did have to go very slowly and make some line adjustments!). It's funny to think that this brilliant snow would be called crud in the states! Shocked First pic is looking down the Grande Pente from the top of the steep bit, and the second is looking over to the Pied Moutet side - all ready to be opened I think. some have obviously been up there, but I suspect it was either pisteurs or hardy types on skins (couple of tracks I could see). Lovely sunshine, cold though. Very Happy Very Happy

Hi all,

I am an aussie currently living in Norway and me, my girlfriend, a mate (both ozzies living in norway) and her sister (ozzie from oz) are coming to L2A on 29th Jan for a week. We are really excited and it is great to hear the resort has been getting a good cover of snow (cheers for the great updates easiski).

It'll be our first time to L2A and being there over New Years I was wondering if there are any special events/parties/gatherings planned - whether they be restaurant dinners and drinks type things or more of a bigger carry on. We are in our mid to late 20s (although i may possibly have just nudged the early 30s although denial is in existence) so am interested in what might be happening.

I can't wait to get out there and amongst the snow. I just waxed my skis up tonight and hopefully going skiing locally in Norway this weekend.

Thanks in advance for any help that may come our way and if anyone feels like a beer with a bunch of aussies let us know!

Cheers

are any of the ski home options viable goals (for the end of the week) for someone out on their first week snowboarding? always good to have goals!

Also, are there still a couple of FREE lifts in L2A on the bunny slopes? Thinking I might have a couple of hours of daylight on my arrival day and if I can get my hire kit in time might have a pootle around near the town to try and get myself back onto the board! Which lifts are they? Are they open? And are any near the chalet carlines!

Pete (excitement is at fever pitch! roll on Sunday!)

peter.holland, all the free tows are on the nursery slopes. You can access the slopes by 5 min walk from Carlines to red eggs - go straight past and you soon reach the extreme edge of the slopes - nice cafe bar at the bottom and an improvised wee jump 3/4 way down the run. All the nursery slopes are next to each other and I recall at least 3 are free Very Happy

peter.holland, Petit Viking and Coolidge Nord and Sud are free. Can't say about end of the week options I'm afraid as it would vary according to how well you get on. Be very careful not to sidslip down a beautiful powder slope though - that would not be popular and I've seen it done! Twisted Evil

joelireland, Welcome to snowheads. I'm assuming you mean 29 Dec rather than Jan! there is an extraordinary amount going on. Depends what you fancy. be careful in the street though as gangs of Italian youths and gangs of French youths have a habit of engaging in pitched battles! Hopefully this won't happen this year after they were set upon last year by the French riot police!! Shocked Shocked If you want to go to a bar you will probably have to buy a ticket for new year, and you should do this as soon as you arrive (or at least that evening) as they do sell out. for midnight you can't usually get into any bars even if you're a local. there will be fireworks and a torchlit decent of the Grande Pente by the ESF. Get a programme from any of the tourist offices to be sure exactly what's going on. Hope this helps.

good advice easkiski... I wouldnt have thought of that - but it makes a lot of sense!

I hope not to be side-sliding about by the end of the week... I'm out to board as much as my little unfit legs will let me - the obvious joys of eating and drinking in nice surrounds shall have to take a back seat!

Is it worth doing an away day to Alp D'huez? Thinking of booking the chopper trip when I get there.

Nice also to see more slopes getting ready to open for this weekend!!! Shall try to whip together a bit of a trip report together after this to answer some of the questions a beginner like me would be asking.... thanks to all you guys for your patience and help!

lisa_jay, No - deffo not GVA! (welcome the SHs). Grenoble or Lyon have the best public transport onwards to resort (cheapest). you can get flights to both these airports from a number of UK airports. From Sheffield probably W Midlands or Leeds. But Leeds only does GVA I think .... Stanstead shouldn't be too bad for you I would think??

Pix today looking down and up from near the bottom of the first part of Les Posettes. I found more untracked turns than on Grande Pente yesterday, and at one point found two together!! The snow is still very powdery and light, even right down in the trees you can see by the town

easiski, some of us up north have no option but to fly to Geneva . Our alternative is to drive in really heavy traffic in the UK to southern airports. Nicer to drive from Geneva. Better than driving from Sheffield to Stansted anyway.

It was another pleasant day today, but absolutely brassic! Really chil wind. Anyway the snow is still good, and here's a photo of the Cretes early this afternoon, and one of the top of the Valentin looking up from the gully just before the bit where you join half way. I skied the top part of Posettes and then cut onto the bottom part of the Valentin. that was OK, but I was surprised by a bit of a slick patch near the bottom. You couldn't call it ice, but certainly firm that slidy as opposed to all the other nice snow around. Shocked

Lots of tracks all over the walls of the Fee although the lifts are not open there, clearly a large number of people are hiking up to get the last of the untracked powder. Very Happy Impressive. Very Happy

Smokin Joe, regretfully, unless I find a stash of Nazi gold in the mountains or I become the first lottery winner in history who didn't buy a ticket, the MSB is off limits for me this year, so I won't be there to defend my cowbell. Did I say cowbell? I meant to say large silver trophy.

I remember using a black regularly to get down the mountain a few years back which was good fun because it was steep, pisted and pretty smooth in the morning with artificial snow support so you could really let rip without worrying about rocks if there wasn't too many people around- I can't remember its name though- any idea?

Dr. Will, that would be the Combe Valentin - no other fits the description.

I didn't take any pix today I'm afraid. I was working all day and it was so cold that I couldn't face the idea of either unzipping my jacked to get to the camera or taking my glove off to take the pic! Sad Sunny and clear, snow good but a horrid NE wind to freeze everything from the Cretes up. The village was very pleasant this morning once the sun came out, but once you got over the hump of the Cretes ..... brrrrrrr.

the only worry about the wind is that it will blow some of the lovely packed powder off the pistes and some spots might get a bit hard. Still - perhaps it will drop soon. Very Happy
