This thread has understandably concentrated on overnight stops for the French Alps, but if anyone is driving to the Austrian Alps I can highly recommend the hotel Eisbach in the village of Ransbach- Baumbach in West Germany, just a bit north of Koblenz. It's just about 2 km off of the A3 (E35) junction 38. It's good value and has a good restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating if the weather is good. There's free parking at the rear of the hotel. There's also a filling station in the village which has cheaper fuel prices.
The hotel is on both hotels.com and booking.com, but you can book directly on the website link I gave. I've stayed there several times.

With Le Shuttle/Eurotunnel now booked, browsing through here for an alternative to our usual stops, as many of them are closed on 3rd January. I was trying to avoid central Reims, as much as we like the Hotel Bristol and it's ease of access to the autoroute, it can be quite noisy being right on Place d'Erlon until the early hours. Has anyone stayed in the Hotel Crystal? It is almost next door, but it seems the entrance is set back off the main street. Or any other alternatives? We prefer independent hotels with a reasonable bistro either in hotel or a short walk away. Gourmet cuisine not essential, but needs to be better than fast food. Dog-friendly of course. Somewhere between Northern Reims and Chalons-en-Champagne preferred as we have an early start from Durham on the Friday morning. There must be some more hidden gems around.

@Hells Bells, have you ever tried the ferry from Hull?
Can't be more than 90mins from Durham.
I live in N. Wales we would never consider any other route to get to the "othe side " of the channel.
Having had the overnight on board we smash the drive in 1 day.

Well 2 weeks today we’ll be in Le Taos and I’m getting very excited with all my gear out of the loft and strewn across the house annoying my wife.
However, we’ve still got to get there.
We are planning to drive from Bristol on the Thursday and stop when it gets dark so somewhere after Troyes and before Beaune most likely.
My greatest concern is having our gear nicked from a full car overnight.
Can anyone recommend some hotels in that range with secure parking or where we can park where we can see the car from the room?

Just the regularly-mentioned Le Val Moret at Magnant, south of Troyes, 5 minutes off the autoroute. A Logis de France motel where you park the car right outside the room. Has a swimming pool, as well as a nice but unpretentious restaurant.
Logis also have a very good loyalty programme, called O’Logis. You accrue €uro credits with each stay and related spending such as meals and they convert to euro vouchers quite quickly. Doesn’t cost anything so if you plan to stay at a Logis you might as well sign up beforehand.

Indeed, the Logis hotels website lets you view their hotels via the map, and they usually have one with the sort of parking you prefer. Logis is good for a midrange budget (and ideal if you have a soft spot for traditional hotels).

People seem paranoid about having stuff nicked but in years of reading accounts of people driving to and from ski holidays I don't remember any tales of thefts.
We're driving on 20/21 December so I've booked a hotel in St Quentin (left it too late last year and there were only expensive rooms left. But driving in a quiet time I'd not book ahead - I think it's good to be flexible. Sometimes you resent stopping if you feel good for another couple of hours, whereas other times (e.g. because of heavy fog) you need to get off the road earlier than planned.

I really hate lying awake in a hotel bed with horrid foam pillow wishing I was on the road.....

@Origen, why would you have a foam pillow? You always take your own
If people are concerned about theft the simple solution is to take your stuff to the room

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

For a budget option I can recommend the IBIS Reims Thillois.
The parking is outdoor but behind a barrier with code access, so you are unlikely to get your vehicle nicked. As others have said, I always take my luggage inside anyway. It does not take long.
It is right next to a large entertainment plaza. There are several places to eat, but I have always used the large all you can eat place. There is a wide variety of choice and if you don't like the hot buffet, they will cook your steak or fish to order.

Just south of Reims. 15 mins off the motorway. It's a farmhouse in a very quiet village. Very safe parking. Lovely rooms. Delightful host, plus she will cook you a superb dinner. I just hope it's not full of snowheads next time I try to book. |
Thank you everyone. We have booked here now. Very much looking forward to it and the start of the season.
Especially as over 1m fresh snow forecast for Tignes next week

You know it makes sense.

We are looking for somewhere for Friday 3rd Jan as a lot of our usual stops are closed. We're leaving Durham at 6am and driving South, usually stop around Reims. Val Moret is too far South. Hotel needs to be dog-friendly with either a restaurant on site or very close by. Parking would be a bonus and not in a city centre. Nice village would be our preference, not averse to a chambre d'hote with meal option.

We're going feb half term with the kids. Leaving on friday midday to get a 3.30 train and hopefully all the way down to Macon for a stopover.
Has anyone stayed there or nearby? Would love some recommendations.
Also what is an appropriate time to leave in the morning to get to Alp D'huez?

Macon is 3 hours in normal conditions to ADH. At HT if you want a smooth run I would be leaving at 5am.
