Thanks @BobinCH, really helpful. I'm a piste skier only, so great that there's still some hope I'll have something to slide around on for the weekend
You have timed your trip perfectly and will be pleasantly surprised by the snow conditions. Saying that, I would download at the end of the day from Ruinettes at 2200m (we do at this time of year) as it will be very slushy on the home run

Live report from the closing day for Savolyeres:
It is extremely crowded!
There are as many as 20 people on the whole mountain
Snow is super lovely creamy thin slush...very flattering to cruise on.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

First of the Zermatt to Verbier PdG races cancelled. Hopefully the ones for later this week can go ahead.
Quote:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Z1 AND A1 RACES ARE CANCELLED. The Commander of the Glacier Patrol gives top priority to the safety of patrollers as well as that of the military and civilians working on the course. The weather situation and the latest forecasts for Tuesday evening, Wednesday and Thursday, as well as the opinions of specialists stationed along the course, led him to cancel the Z1 and A1 races.
A degradation from the northwest causes temperatures to drop, with up to -25° C felt above 3000m, and wind gusts of up to 50 km/h on the ridges and peaks. Despite this, at low altitude, wet snow will not be able to consolidate sufficiently for the passage of the patrols. Another crucial point, the cloud accumulation and fog expected throughout the course from Tuesday to Thursday could prevent any medical evacuation by air during the race.
The commander of the PdG and the entire organisation share the disappointment of the patrols who prepared for this long-awaited appointment. He is counting on everyone's understanding of the decision that had to be taken.
As a result:
For the races:
The Z1 and A1 races are cancelled.
The dates of races Z2 and A2 are maintained.
For the official parts:
The press conference (3 p.m.), the opening ceremonies (4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.) and awards ceremony (2:30 p.m.) are cancelled.
For the practical aspects:
Requests for transfer from race Z1 to Z2 or from A1 to A2 are not accepted. The Z2 and A2 starting windows are complete.

I’m sitting here with a cold waiting for our PdG start to be cancelled so no skiing for me. Looks pretty good up there from Émiliens story. If, as expected, we get cancelled will be out shredding with the kids tomorrow

@BobinCH, family skiing for you sadly.
PDG from Zermat is cancelled, only Arolla start will go ahead.
Too foggy, much too cold, -35 last night at some of the checkpoints.
It's not just the competitors' safety but also the people standing out all night manning the checkpoints.
You know it makes sense.

Disappointing given the forecast is for it to be clear tonight…
Anyway, sun popped it’s head out on Mont Gelé

The key Tunnel de la Becque between Riddes and La Tzoumaz in the 4 Vallées has now re-opened (as of 8 July 2024).
The public transport télépherique/PostBus schedule has returned to the usual times, from the augmented service when the tunnel was shut. So make sure that you're looking at any timetables that are up-to-date and ideally, go to the SBB timetable site when planning any trips.
Last buses to La Tzoumaz from isérables are at 18:20 weekdays and 17:10 Weekends and festival days. As before, there's now a lunchtime gap in the connections when the bus departs Isérables 12:25 but not again 'till 16:30 weekdays (13:20/15:30 weekends). So you really need to plan a GVA flight arrival before ~13:30 weekdays / ~12:30 weekend, in order to have a reasonable margin for delays in flights and at immigration.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Lots more snow on the glacier than usual for August
The new winter bus timetable is now out for the connection between Riddes station and La Tzoumaz.
Good news is that there are now a couple of extra buses direct from the station to the village in the evening.
This means you now have much more leeway to catch a later flight out of the UK than before.
Previously the last Riddes departure was via télépherique (to Isérables) and bus at ~17:25 weekdays and ~16:25 Weekends. Working backwards, and leaving room for flight delays, immigration, then a train GVA>Martigny and Martigny>Riddes etc., this meant that you really needed to arrive in Geneva by 12:00 at the latest for the connections to be within a comfortable margin. Now with the 19:05 and 20:10 weekday buses and 18:05, 20:10 weekend buses connecting Riddes station and La Tzoumaz directly, you can go for a later flight.
My analysis is that the tunnel closure last season, and subsequent addition of buses to compensate, probably showed that a couple of later buses would be cost-effective during the high season.
