The current landing ban information was set to expire tomorrow, so today's announcement is just an extension, plus adding countries and removing Lombardy (as stated by Scarlet above). In the hope that that landing ban from the UK would be lifted, Ryanair have been selling flights from 17.07 between STN and SZG. Initially they started selling flights from 01.07 but had to cancel them. Looks like another load of cancellations are now due.

Germany has no restrictions
Travel within the EU or the Schengen area
The temporary entry restrictions for travellers from other EU countries, states associated with Schengen (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) and the United Kingdom have been removed entirely since 21 June 2020. Travel to Germany from other EU states, the Schengen area and the United Kingdom has been possible without restriction since then.

Belgium looks OK
Since 15 June, Belgium has opened its borders for travel to and from the European Union, including the United Kingdom and the four other Schengen countries (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway). However, it is up to each country to decide whether to open its own borders.

The number of cases in Austria (169 new cases this morning) has been creeping up in the past few days, though not in the mountain regions. There is a possibility that masks will become compulsory in shops again along with more restrictions on bars etc. Hopefully the issues are related to the various local outbreaks which can be controlled but maybe not.

@munich_irish, such a shame, after the virus had almost been eliminated. However a predictable consequence of the opening of borders and easing of restrictions. Sorry for stating the obvious.

@tatmanstours, maybe. From what I understand the outbreaks, much like here in Germany, are related to various workplaces, mainly connected to the meat industry, well away from tourist areas. If so it should be possible to deal with without wider measures, who knows. However it would seem to make it less likely the Austrian government will relax further the restrictions on entry. Perhaps Austrian tourists can be enticed to the UK for the Christmas p*ss ups Boris is planning

@munich_irish, @Scarlet, Back in the late 80's, in a restaurant in Kirchberg I once asked for some veg with my savoury dumpling thing when served at the table, waiter gave me a scowl and told me sternly that veg are for the the cattle and pointed downstairs to the floor......unten he kept saying and he went off muttering.....never did get the veg!

I always thought that was it too but a number of years ago now I was told it is actually 'Christus Mansionem Benedicat' or 'Jesus Bless this House'
I did ask the man whom told me this why there are the + signs which don't fit the phrase?
No answer, so I honestly don't know which is correct?

It is the 3 wise men. Local kids come around on the 6th of January (or a few days before), knock on doors and offer to write "C+M+B" and the year on the door jam in return for a Euro or two. Given that it is only the first group that get the cash there is an incentive to be first! There has seemed to be less kids doing this in the past few years, not sure why as most local traditions seem to be well supported.

Compulsory wearing of masks in all shops, restaurants and hotels were reintroduced in Upper Austria about 10 days ago, following a relatively small spike in cases in Linz. Schools closed for Summer holidays one week early.
It is anticipated that the whole of Austria may well now follow suit, perhaps early next week. Travel into Austria from some Balkan countries has also now been banned.
Folks hereabouts seem to be taking the reintroduction of masks quite seriously, although some social media channels appear to have an increasing level of dissatisfaction with the politics at play!
There also seems to be concern that social gatherings may once again be curtailed.

As widely predicted Austria is reintroducing a mask requirement in shops, banks etc . The biggest concern appears to be infections coming from the western Balkans (Serbia etc). The suggestion in the press conference was that entry from "high risk" countries will now only be allowed after a negative test from a certified laboratory and quarantine procedures will be tightened. Clearly the focus will be on the southern borders with Slovenia & Hungary but the interior minister quite specifically said that there will be some checks in other places too. How this might effect travellers from the UK is not clear, need to wait for further details but it seems unlikely that there will be any reduction on the current travel restrictions. If attending religious services is important to you then Austria is unlikely to be a good spot in the near future, the Austrian Chancellor specifically mentioned that religious services were problematic and that some church closures were to be expected.
Austria also plans to introduce a "traffic light" system to highlight risks on more local level.

@munich_irish, Thank you, no change to entry requirements for UK citizens for the moment which are in place until 30 September, watching closely to see if anything changes!
|

@radar, maybe. I got the impression from what Chancellor Kurz said that entry requirements are going to be tightened from all "high risk" countries, though the focus was very much on the Balkan area. It might be that the UK gets included, probably better to wait until the latest info is posted up in the morning. From what was said by the various ministers there are going more checks, any thoughts of arriving in Austria without a test from a certified laboratory (whatever that is) is not a good idea.

@holidayloverxx, I am aware of that. I got the impression, but might be wrong here, that Kurz was suggesting that the Austrian authorities were going to be more particular over which test certificates were acceptable. Of course there could be an element of politics here but I did wonder if they might be in the process of moving the goalposts as to what they will or will not accept. Hopefully that will not change what they have said is "acceptable" up to now.

As far as I can see, the reintroduced mask requirement is for supermarkets, banks and post offices but not anywhere else (other shops, restaurants?). Public transport and medical/pharmacies is still mandated from before. Anyone got any better info on that, or have I got that right? It seems like random theatre now (supermarkets “look good” because everyone has to go there at some point and there may be some logic in it, but most banks and post offices have always been screened off, so that seems surplus to requirements, and in that case why not other similar settings?).
Also, I wish they'd list out the countries where entry restrictions are changing, as grouping them all together when you don't know which are in the group is frustrating
Slightly OT but also interesting is that some of the “stay home” restrictions we endured in March have been deemed illegal and some fines will have to be repaid by the state. Neither my German nor legal knowledge is good enough to fully comprehend what's going on, but I think it relates to stopping people going to public places. Fines for meetings at another's home have already been challenged successfully in a previous hearing.

Could say the same for the UK where 1000's of people were fined for breaking the lockdown. Then when a government advisor and members of the ruling party do it the rule gets quietly dropped. I do not know if the fines have been reimbursed yet.

No change to the entry requirements for UK citizens, following yesterdays announcement,
https://bmi.gv.at/news.aspx?id=6848727832704B4B752F633D , link to english version at the bottom of the page, relevant extract below.
Individuals who do not comply with any of the above criteria and who wish to enter Austria from the Schengen zone or from Andorra, Bulgaria, Ireland, Croatia, Monaco, Romania, San Marino, the Vatican, the United Kingdom or Cyprus need to furnish a negative test for SARS- VoV-2 which is at most four days old or enter into a two-week quarantine period at home or in suitable other accommodation, which needs to be confirmed by a document showing that such accommodation is available. If no confirmation that a suitable accommodation is available can be furnished, such individuals will be banned from entering Austria.
If a SARS-CoV-2 test is carried out during the quarantine period and shows a negative result, the quarantine may be lifted.
