@duncansarmy, you need to turn right at the top of the gondola to get to the Belvedere lift. If you turned left you would head back down to Morzine.

Didn't you say you were a beginner skier, @duncansarmy and that your girlfriend had never seen snow? That might make it tricky. You could no doubt cope fine with chairlifts, but could she?

If you are in a hurry you can ski direct to Les Gets from the top of Pleney via the newish 'Chardon Bleu' piste without having to catch the super slow Belvedere chairlift. That is if the 'Chardon Bleu' link is open, and if you can find where it starts! it is also pretty flat so keep your speed up. The 'Chardon Bleu' (labelled C5 on the piste map linked below) starts from near the bottom of the TS Nabor chair and takes you through to near the bottom of the TS Folliets de Golf chair where you can pick up the Bruyere piste to Les Gets.

The Belvedere lift is very much a beginners lift but there is a bit of the Crocus run down to Les Gets that joins into the Bruyeres that can get a bit tricky on the slope by the Follietts lift if you are a beginner, but if you got up to Pleney there are gentle places up there.

Chairlifts are the least of my worries.

Why don't people take lessons? If any one skied into my niece or nephew whilst 'being taught by a mate' I'd likely kill them

Not unless you're a beginner not taking lessons @duncansarmy,
All the Avoriaz lift openings were posted up on their page this morning. Pretty much everything from Saturday

I skied from Pre la Joux over to Avoriaz and back on Saturday. Pistes were hard and occasionally icy, skies were blue and there were a few more stones around than usual. Avoriaz was quite busy, Chatel quiet. Most pistes were open. Because of the hard conditions, there was a lot of intermediate skiers skiing out of control and too fast.
The outlook for the next couple of weeks doesn't look that good, but at the moment, conditions are pretty fine considering the doom and gloom around on other weather threads.

Sitting in GVA after 3 days staying in Morzine. Skied Avoriaz on sat/sun and Chatel today.
More snow would be good BUT.....Plenty of enjoyable piste skiing to be had before the holiday crowds arrive.
Today over on the Chatel side there was good coverage on the piste, very quiet, no lift queues

@Roger C, think there'll be any left in Avoriaz come xmas week with current conditions? Appreciate it's tough to call

@duncansarmy, almost everything lift wise is open in Avoriaz. You should have been here last christmas - that was bad.

Does indeed sound better than last year - encouraging. Let's hope it survives the 3000m + FLs

As you know we're staying in Morzine at christmas, i spoke to the chalet host who said that all their guests skied all week last year over christmas in Avoriaz, not sure how much fun that was but i guess encouraging considering it looks better than last year. Like you rightly said though, let's hope those FLs drop or it doesn't see precip otherwise.

I was there last year for the week before Christmas and it was grim. The salt in the wound was the delays to our journey to the airport caused by the dump of snow that arrived the night before we were leaving so I hope you have a better time than us

God that must have been awful, i empathise with you. Guess we will all have good and bad weeks. If that happens this year i'll be staying out there until New Year and trying to find some last minute accom (any owners drop me a PM?). Although i'm not holding out!

@duncansarmy, that happened to everybody out in a huge swathe of the French Alps last year. And I had to do an airport transfer to Geneva on the Sunday morning when the entire place was sparkling with freshly pisted corduroy and blue skies. C'est la vie.

Eugh, can't imagine what that must feel like. Well all my mates are heading out in the new year so guess it could be a similar scenario Are you out there now @pam w?

We have flights to Geneva booked 2nd Jan and are very keen on Portes du Soleil but are holding off booking accommodation for now. Hopefully history will repeat itself and there will be a decent dump before new year, because I really want to avoid the 3+ hr transfer to Tignes or Val Thorens!!

I think the early excitement has died down now, the early snow has not been added to. I had a look at avoriaz and it looks quite awful compared to what I am used. Hope people booked can do some skiing but I heard stories of icy lower slopes with lots people skiing too fast and out of control.

I suspect the number of out of control skiers is related to the Transition festival taking place this week- lots of kids on £99 for a week trips having a go I imagine

We skied Avoriaz for the last two days. Most runs are open and in good condition, there is thin snow cover with some stoney and odd icy sections but overall its good skiing.

@rhinogoo,
If you want to ski on piste you'll be fine. There's plenty open but it's largely man made. If you predominantly ski off piste then I wouldn't bother. It really is that simple

Yeah aware of that but @zzz, post is misleading if no lifts are open. You asked what skiing in morzine was like, not avoriaz. Does say he's located there so I'd be happy to be corrected

@duncansarmy, Avoriaz is open, the Morzine Pleney side will not be. Morzine has lifts and buses which allow you to access the SuperMorzine/ Avoriaz side instead of the Morzine/ Les Gets side.
Les Gets will also be partially open.

@duncansarmy, rhinogoo said he knew that Morzine is shut. Morzine is closed. There is next to no snow on Pleney, minimal on Nyon; Les Gets claim to have some! I think there will be limited Les Gets skiing open this weekend.
Avoriaz has a reasonable amount open. Arare, Chavanette, Fornet, Linderets, some of the Haut Forts. The runs down to Ardent and Prodain are open. No idea what links are opening this weekend, sorry. The snow above 2000m is natural and stony in places. Below that is mostly artificial and somewhat firm.
It rained last night up to and above the mountain of Nantaux (2000m). The temperature outside my Morzine house is 3C.
Anyone coming out next week can expect reasonable on piste skiing but no off piste. Temps will be balmy (0C approx 3000m). It's plenty warm enough for outside terrace beers
Hope that helps

Thanks all for the info .. It looks likes we are going and going to make the best of what we got ..
It's not going to be perfect but it's just one of those things .
If the weather was cloud I don't think we would have gone .. But because it's wall to wall sun shine it's going to be more of a relaxed ski than smashing the miles in .
I've been to Morzine / avoriaz 16 times so I've seen the whole area .
Out with you buttys on the snow , or stay at home with the bride .. Lol
