Apparently the Queyras has a high seismic activity, not the first time it's happened, they had one in 2014 as well

Started around 04:00 - bird table has a few cms on it.
Am going up the hill with the families (as I've not been up with them all week) that's after I've shown them how to put chains on!
Was a slight break in the snow but coming down again now!
@KenX, think worth first lifts tomorrow ?

Not that much up the hill. At the lifts a guy was telling everyone to ski between the poles on the piste as snow cover was so light and not venture away from the piste.
Reckon was only 5-10cm and did see some horrendous tracks where people had been tempted to ski the "fresh".
Chains were a mare for one of the group. Hire car co had given them the wrong size chains so we had to bodge with the spare links. Hopefully now will not be needed as roads are clear, but they do have to get over Montgenevre and now it's snowing heavy!

And just heard, they had to put chains back on to get over and it's really slow going.
Wind's really howling at times in the valley.
Looks like cold front coming through now ?

Coming down a little better, be interesting to see what we have by the morning.
I can check my cam (link below) from still in bed, but no doubt I'll be an excited little boy and will get up at stupid o'clock as usual with a forecast like this to see if it delivers.
PS seems to be coming from the South !

Just back from a week in cherre staying at the ucpa. Conditions will hopefully improve but the pistes are, imho, sketchy, and the off piste, and we did do some, was even more so. Some lovely views, And so much sun... A very dry start to the year, but, a really lovely place, and we met some snow heads too... Trip report to follow, with pics, but in the meantime I need to recover from the aborted drive over D1091 on the way out and the 5 hour queue for frejus home on the way home.

@KenX, don't know what to suggest as a plan of attack? Have to get van out, Elaine out, bags and kit out, though should have done that last night!
No rush though as still coming down.
You can see how much snow we now have in the garden and on the van http://stylealtitude.com/serrechevalierweathercam.html
Further Edit: wind's picking up and I can hear blasting

Hello, 4 snowheads are are off to Serre Chevalier (Monetier) in less than 3 weeks. Very pleased to see that snow is now falling and I hope it continues to do so. Two of us will be driving from Basel, and I was wondering if I could get some advice about route choice from those who know the area well. Google gives me three suggestions:
1) Via Chambery and the Frejus tunnel. This looks to be the shortest and offers the option of an exploration day somewhere in the Maurienne valley on either/both outward and return journeys. I know the discounted tunnel tickets need to be bought in advance.
2) Via Turin.
3) Via Milan This is the longest but has the advantage that we could stop off and see some friends in Como on the way back.
Purely from a route perspective, is there anything I should take into consideration not obvious from the map? Are any of the routes not passable in winter? Are any of the routes subject to long delays not obvious? Is there another route not shown that would be better? We will be in our own car which has 4 winter tyres and chains. We will be arriving/leaving on the Saturdays (23rd and 30th January) but have a lot of flexibility on arrival and departure times.
Thanks very much for any advice.
We have quite a lot of lessons planned but would obviously love to meet up with any other snowheads around that week.

The Turin route is not bad but check both Frejus and Mont Blanc tunnel status before you set out as they are often subject to closures and queuing; that might dictate your choice. The road down to Turin then up to Mont Genevre is not bad, very scenic but going one way through the alpine tunnels can be an expensive business if you want to return via the Maurienne, that might dictate the Frejus. You could also travel via Grenoble and the Romanche valley if there is no snow on the Lauteret; but if you've already bought the cheap Frejus tickets that would dictate your choice.

@davidof, thanks. Do you advise against the Chambery route for any reason? I hadn't clicked that there would be two toll tunnels on the Turin route, so that one is kind of my least favourite now, unless I'm missing something. I had discounted the route over the Lauteret due to the issues with the road, as I don't want to find out last minute that it isn't open due to weather conditions, and have to go round Frejus anyway but without the cheap tickets.

No I would go via Chambery both ways myself, if I were leaving from Basel. Via the Frejus. The closures, which are rare, are usually late at night so you shouldn't be affected. The Frejus is the more modern of the tunnels so has less issues with security alerts.

Hi all - relative newbie to the site. Am off to SC for the first time with the family (staying at Aliley in Les Monetiers) at Half Term so have been following the thread with interest. Thanks for everyone's input, it's great to find out what's going on in the resort. Looking at the webcam it appears that the snow has picked up again - can anyone 'on the ground' confirm?

@Gämsbock, Come one way return the other to see your friends?
Three weeks time not high season so you should be ok with the Frejus.
Well I've been up to Pont de L'Alpe tonight (1,700m) and it's snowing heavily up there and road covered, but was not through choice!
Left supermarket in Briancon and my diesel particulate filter light came on, so decided on a blast as last time it came on I ignored it for a day or two and ended up with a problem.
It only went off just as I gunned it up the hill to here, ridiculous!
@joshuaharrison, And as for snow up the hill was skiing the soft stuff with KenX this morning side of the pistes and a bit through the trees, though by Noon was more like a Spring snowfall with it getting heavier.
This will be good for a base but we do need more!

First visit to SC this week with some friends. Seems a really nice place and hugely grateful for the improved conditions compared to last week but slightly disappointed that after 60 (?) cm of snow over the weekend there were still no extra pistes open today compared to last week. Appreciate there was a reasonably high avalanche risk in some areas but there were also pistes adjacent to those that were open that were covered in snow and yet closed. Didn't see a single piste basher on the move either. Every member of staff we asked seem to shrug and say "maybe tomorrow". Slightly concerned there's an attitude that because this is an "off-peak" week it doesn't matter.
Do those who live locally have a sense of what we might expect in the coming days?
On the plus side it's snowing (lightly) again this evening, at least in monnetier.

@ally85, there is usually good reason. They rarely move the piste bashers during the day. It isn't safe.

@ally85, it's more like 30-40cm fresh snow and this is the first fall of the season, so although it looks fine, not really enough just yet to bash those pistes and get them safely opened without churning up the rocks underneath.....
Skiing with Weathercam confirms this, off piste or down closed pistes, you couldn't ski in each other's tracks as the snow was only enough depth for one skiers turns at a time without going all the way through!

OK, so Weathercam suggested a skin up the Cucumelle piste under the Vallons chair as it's not open yet, 80 minutes, 500m vertical and 4km distance we're at the top at the Col du Cucumelle, put our outer layers back on and popped off the edge: (there were 2 other tracks already there, probably from pisteurs)
(Live image from Serre Che webcam)
Wonderful cold, boot-deep powder with a couple of rocks felt underfoot, Weathercam:
And me:
It was really cold to begin with in the shade, -11 on my car dash, probably colder up top, but as soon as we hit the sun we had to drop a layer or 2!
And a well-earned beer on the way back at the Pi Mai, then down the closed red run which was in surprisingly great shape
