Raining in Flaine tonight and my guess is that it is raining to the top of the mountain, it is just too warm. Lots of rocks and stones on the slopes and some horrible brown patches on the lower slopes. They opened Aujon on Thursday and we had some good fun skiing off the sides and even today there were still some fresh tracks to be made. The closed slopes offer some of the best skiing because they are less well travelled. Was planning to ski tomorrow but I'm darned if I'm going to ski in the rain, let's see what happens overnight. Could be an earlier start than planned.
@Snow Hound, You're right, a few degrees will not make any difference, we need another metre of snow and consistent temps below freezing. That's not much to ask for, is it?
Back in 2 weeks time, keep the reports coming.

@sn00boarder, all the forecasts are now saying that tomorrow's precip will be snow above 1500m at least most of the time. How many of you going? I'm the only boarder in a group of 6 apart from a second week beguiner.

I can see snow on the webcams at 1600 - but it looks a bit wet on the road. Need the temps to drop. 1 week and counting

Yesterday the skiing wasn't great, lots of thin snow cover warnings and a lot shut.

However, the skiing today was excellent. Visibility was awful, but the rain that has been falling since yesterday was, above Les Carroz, falling as snow. Fresh powder everywhere. Runs we did yesterday with brown mush, rocks and ice where covered today. So fingers crossed the temps drop this week and the snow stays.
If anyones interested in meeting for a mountain side coffee next week I'll be in the GM on me todd.

Yesterday was a lot of fun, a few inches of powder and then soft bumps everywhere. Vis was bad with snow/sleet/low cloud till 1. Not all the the runs were open so it was busy in places. Had fun down a couple of the closed reds, please dont tell my mum. We didn't venture down from Flaine but some of the lower pistes were looking scraped by the end. Should be clear and bright today, more should be open with the pisteures having worked their magic. Should be a good cruising day.

@leeboy, If you're getting worried for easter I'm heading out a week on Saturday and am now getting officially twitchy. Here's hoping for a change in conditions over the next couple of weeks.

Back to work today. Colleague told me his brother fell 7 metres down a crevasse in Flaine going off piste against all advice...Wrecked his helmet but nothing else. Hope the snow will cover all the holes by Feb half term!

@Garioch those pics from macgyver (thank you) have eased my worries some what, i was expecting to see a lot of patches and not much white but that looks ok to me considering the snow (or lack off) in recent weeks
@red27 , it is indeed round the corner, i was in Tesco on Xmas eve 7pm and they were packing away Xmas gear and filling some shelves with easter stuff

As we all know, it was because he was wearing a helmet that he had the fall in the first place

@macgyver, A couple of those pics do not seem to be in Flaine, which is good because the snow looks better than I thought too.

Grand massif is skiable. I've had three good days on a board.. Slopes getting quieter and there is a lot of icyish stuff...
But it's is wafer thin. On the run down to flaine from carroz my mate pulled up sharp and there was grass showing... They have bulldozed everything available off the sides. It's better at the top of carroz than flaine .. Signs up saying do not go off piste in flaine now..
I think they have done all they can now in moving snow around .. If it was busy the pinch point runs would wrecked by midday
It isn't at mom and I have had a great few day in the sun. But I can't see how they can keep much of it open for much longer without some snow

Hi all, first post on SH. Heading to GM for the first time on 07 Feb, staying in Samoens. Hoping for a few more dumps and colder weather before then. Bought a new board which is now looking like a bad move

@carroz, Tourmaline this week has been close to a pleasure. Few people and little in the way of carnage at the end section. In three days haven't had even a scratch on my skis - stayed on piste though.
The trickiest section I have seen with carnage to match is the final pitch on Dahu just before you get to the La Luge restaurant. It was a sheet of ice top to bottom and I am talking about ice that shines at you!
I helped a couple of girls up who said that the thought of it loomed over their skiing every day. They hadn't worked out or been told that there were other ways down to to Sam 1600.

Sounds dreadful am off to Morillon myself on the 24th have been avidly watching webcams and looking at snow reports, it looks dire there today. Hope the snow falls tomorrow as predicted or hopefully even heavier. Will keep my fingers crossed for you. Thanks for the update.

Didn't go out until the sun came out today then it was really pretty good. Good on the way to flaine and tourmaline okay but getting iffy in places. Having said that the thin place seres well marked and there was very little ice. The return to samoens involved pic long your path to a certain extent. That is unless you were in a local ski club. Those kids only have one speed and from the Grand Vins I saw them aiming at brown patches and jumping them. Deep envy!

Out on 24th also but am not concerned. 5th time to grand massif at all different times in the season and have always had snow to ski on. Have had a day here and there where rain delayed play or a whiteout and have come back from Flaine to Morillon in a blizzard which was scary but have never come home disappointed so Im not worried!!!!!😀

Had a really good ski today, the first hour or so was in rain/cloud, but then it brightened up and the slopes over in Flaine where great. Also racked in almost 90Km of movement, could have made 100 if I hadn't stopped to have tea and biscuits!

Snowed for a couple of hours this morning and most of the slopes we hit today in carroz and samoens were very skiiable! Had a great day with some on and off piste action. Never made it over to flaine as the board in carroz reported that the link was closed. Clearly wasn't though! Lots of runs closed in carroz but what is open is all good. Will head to flaine first thing tomorrow.

Just finished day 1. Have to say it is a lot better than I was expecting. Sure there is less open than usual, especially around Les Carroz, flaine and Samoens were fine, we spent most of the day in Flaine. The lower runs have a few icy patches, but didnt see many stones or grass. All in all, some really well groomed fast pistes, which might be a bit hard packed for beginners who fall on them - thankfully, no falls for me today. Lovely, sunny day mostly.
