dan100, Lyon is not too bad,but again you have the Col to negotiate, and we've had bad weather across there in April. There was a direct bus service until fairly recently. Some of my regulars flew to Marseille. If we flew Turin from Stansted was always our easiest option even from up here, despite it being Ryanair.

Gavin Crosby's been posting some epic pics from Serre Chevalier today. Thigh deep by the looks of it. A good base for March, me thinks

Sharkymark, not that I am jealous or anything particularly as my apartment is empty next week with all that fresh stuff to play in.
in march we are flying in to turin and its a pretty decent transfer from there. sharlymark - my view esxactly a great base for march. would like to see some more snow on the slower slopes but then 2 months to go
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Tarrantaise ski safari continues, drove from Tignes to La Tania and skied there, then back here to Tignes taking La Tania daughter back here to Tignes as she is not working tomorrow, so plan is to ski St Foy as I've never skied there and heard much about it, only trouble is that they have not had the snow that Serre has, and then I look at my garden cam to see that it is snowing heavily from the looks of things
And all the bitches have more or less crashed, that is the wife, twin daughters and three dogs - anyone would think that they've been doing all the driving as well as skiing today
Weathercam, and what are conditions like in Serre Chevalier ?

I'm out in SC and the conditions are great! Is snowed yesterday and during the night. Loads of snow and not too many people.
The Snow is quite light at the top but heavy at the bottom. I didn't have a guide today and I was boarding alone so had to content myself with playing around the poles and trees at the side - but even so I still found plenty of fresh stuff. Avi risk 4 so not sure how much more serious off piste is being although seemed to be almost as many people heading into the trees as there were on the pistes.
Currently snowing again up top.

Thinking of booking a week in SC 9th-16th Feb - how are the conditions there atm? After spending a week in St Anton at christmas and finding stones/hard pistes a bit of a struggle in places we're looking for lots of lovely snow for this trip (and hopefully not many crowds!)
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Becstar, according to friends out there , the conditions are absolutely superb. If you are on FB have a look for Gavin Crosy and New Generation Serre Chevalier skiing in the powder at the weekend. Resort is also very quiet.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Looks like the snow is great out there at the mo and has got a good base down early on in the season. I'm just considering going on 22nd or 29th March but am undecided which week to go yet.

So glad to be back here after the likes of Tignes, Val d'Isere and Courcheval these last four days, though has to be said, was most impressed with St Foy!
We left Tignes in nigh on white out conditions and had heavy cloud all the way to the Frejus tunnel, and once out the other side, sunshine, and was like that all the way to Serre.
And is always interesting how when it comes up in conversation with French people working in those resorts that we're from Serre visiting that they then start becoming almost animated in how much they like this part of the world compared to the Northern resorts.
Not too sure what to do today, very sunny but has been very cold over night, might try and talk the Mrs into going for a ski tour as not too sure how much fresh is left up there and what condition it is in.
Off to Sauze late Thursday to ski with a bunch of party animals I know on Friday, going to be quite a few resorts in week

Hells Bells, twas in deed a great day out - went for a tour with the dogs.
Looked like a cracking day on the pistes here, but we chose to leave the hordes, not that it's exactly busy here
Here's a couple of pics
And there's more pictures as well at the route we took, plus a interesting shot of a recent slide here
Hoping for the snow that is forecast today, and that should happen circa 17:00 as I drive over to Sauze D'Oulx

Any advice on good pistes for a couple of intermediate skiers?

It is an intermediates paradise. There is so much choice of runs. Cucumelle is a lovely red run and the runs over to Monetier are also very good and tend to be a lot quieter. Great choice of lovely blue runs which I can't recall their names but if you are fairly confident then you would be fine on pretty much everything. Not sure about the black Casse De Boef or Luc Alphand as did not venture on them. You will love it.

Hi virtually the entire domain is very skiiable depending on your level of confidence and obviously conditions. The two black runs mentioned Luc Alphand and Casse de Beouf are very skiiable, are pisted, wide and are not the hardest blacks you will ever ski. The only blacks I would be wary of is the one down from the mid station in monetier which has a decent pitch of moguls and the black from the top of Monetier can also be challenging as often left unpisted, but there is a red option at the top.

t40ora, As above there's so much out there. One of my favorite resorts. One thing I noticed when I was there was that the pistes seemed in better condition over Chantemele/Villeneuve/Monetier. they seemed harder/more compacted/glazed over Briancon. Might have been just when I was there, but I did wonder if the aspect was slightly different?

rogg, the pistes in Briancon get more sun on them. More SOuth-East facing than the rest which tend to be northerly.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I've always thought best to ski briancon in the morning. A lovely long red down in good conditions

thanks Hells Bells, that was my guess, but it isn't immediately apparent from the piste map, i know they're more representative and drawn so you can see all the slopes but it was my only point of reference.

As has been mentioned, it really is a great place for intermediates. The Luc Alphand is really a black for the last 200m or so - properly steep and very challenging at the end of the day. Most of the run, though, is fast, wide, roller-coaster red. It is an FIS rated downhill. The last 200m can be mostly avoided by jumping onto the the green Briance track. Best time to ski it? Around 10.30/11.00am IME.
Les Vallons from above Serre Ratier (starts from top of Serre Chevalier 2491) is a really fun blue that runs down through the trees - great warm-up piste. Another from that location is Draye - cracking red down to Serre Ratier.
Marteau (blue) from the top of the Casse du Beouf chair is fun - perhaps not overly taxing, but a nice ski down through the trees.
La Cucumelle, as mentioned, is terrific. Cibouit above Monetier is another fast and fun red as is Yret.
Over towards Briancon, Remparts is yet another reasonably long and entertaining red.
Damn, there are some good pistes there - must go again before too long

id forgotton the last bit of luc alphand. I remember that with big piles of fresh snow the first week i went skiing 21 years ago. There was the odd wipe out that day
Should imagine pistes will be very quiet today being transfer day and the resort is generally empty.
Off piste is well tracked out now and we do need some fresh snow (which is forecast for late Sunday going into Monday), that said pistes are in great condition so no worries there.
I've been over in Sestriere and Sauze D'Oulx last couple of days and similar to here with pistes in great condition.
You do get a free day over in Montgenevre and I think it includes the Milky Way (Via Latta - Italian Resorts) and worth doing if you get the chance, if only to have great pizzas and coffee for half the price that it is here in France
This was the mildly amusing episode from yesterday.

Hello
Yes slopes were v quiet yesterday and I had some pretty much to myself. Most pistes in great condition although a bit hard first thing. There has been LOTS of snow making this week (leaving huge rock hard piles of icy stuff in the middle of slopes is a first for me!) so should be enough snow to maintain on slope conditions for a while.
Off piste pretty tracked out - at least stuff that is reasonably accessible however still decent soft snow and not fully tracked in the forest if that's your thing.
I had an amazing week. Highlights being fresh tracks after climbing cucumelle and a good day in La Grave on Friday.
I really can't recommend SC enough - I like the slopes and there are plenty of them and SC seems to piste the slopes well. The off piste is great for my level and the baths are the best thing ever to sooth tired legs. The UCPA is well located for skiing (ski to the door and there's a lift about 30 meters away) or for getting the ski the to the baths. I had another great meal at the restaurant in V on the right hand side just over the bridge.

kat.ryb, glad it went well, was recommending Serre UCPA to some mates who are in Sauze for a long weekend.
Restaurant is Petit Pont run by Marc and his wife, who is the daughter of my brother's ex and twas none too amicable split so tend not to go there now
Hells Bells, SnowAngel do you know if a Holiski card can be used by someone else - OH has a season pass and forgot to cancel HoliSki, and we now have a daughter with us for a while (a long story but was a drive up to La Tania yesterday) so we were wondering if she could use the HoliSki pass.
Been grim here today with howling wind, spent most of it sorting the FreeView sat dish up on a more permanent basis (fun in the wind) and cabling, now have all channels (groan).
The week to come.........
Pick friend up tomorrow from Oulx at 19:23 leaving Ashord at 11:00 who is staying with us and keeping OH company whilst I bog off elsewhere
Two mates come over to LG Mon Pm from Deux Alpes - think I'll pass and sort above friend out with my skis and ski with him here Tuesday
Tues PM three mates arrive in LG and depending on conditions I'll join them & guide Wed am and stay over for three days......
Phew........
